  • I am only 15, I will admit. However, Joy Division is a listen that makes me feel like I was there. It's a shame it had to come at Ian's expense, but he created something that shall endure.

Closer is one of the greatest albums in rock history. Unknown Pleasures too, but I'll always resonate more with the former.

  • God bless Ian Curtis (and Tony Wilson, too).

  • I'm only 22, been listening to Joy Division since I was 16, and I can tell you, Joy Division & fuckin god Ian Curtis, they're gonna be with me til' I leave this world

  • 1:27 - utterly depressing and yet given the parlous state of the music scene - there may be truth in it.

  • long live the LEGACY of JOY DIVISION AND AND THE LEGEND IAN CURTIS!

  • i'm 16 and Joy Division are inside of me, one of the greatest groups ever, RIP Ian

  • DANCE TO THE RADIO!!!

  • anybody know where i can find this documentary please

  • "In 1976 four young men from ruined, post-industrial Manchester, England"

Err.. two were from Salford and two were from Macclesfield.

  • @EdJackW I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to encompass both of those under Manchester....

  • What is the video that starts off this trailer?

  • Is possible to watch the documentary in streaming?

  • I wish I could take what I learned from this incredible band and use it for my own music.

  • Broke through the plastic.

  • @BrandNewShoe Annik was wrong yes. But she saw a need in Ian and tried to help. He was misdiagnosed and medicated incorrectly. He was lost. The side effects were killing him and it affected his relationship with his wife. Annik was one of the only people that could connect with him. And see the side of him that others didnt see. Not just his gothic side. She was a bitch true, but not the reason why he is dead.

  • @BrandNewShoe that is stupid. you just don't know the story. you don't love this band if you don t understand that.

  • never NO ONE like you

    hope you rest in peace

see you...somewhere IAN CURTIS , the bigger YOUNG MEN

  • Just saw this documentary last night. Now I don't want to return it to the public library any time soon haha.

  • I am 41 and Joy Division is still inside me

  • @bo2web Couldn't have said it better myself. Although I'm not 41 ;) I'm 39, lol!! Without doubt, one of the best bands to have graced my ears. Like, ever...R.I.P Joy Division.

  • Can someone find me the name of the Publisher of this Documentary? Ima need it for my presentation bibliography on Ian.

    xxx

  • JOY DIVISION ARE CLASS :)

  • Love you Ian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Where can I find this documentary?

  • OMFG I NEED TO SEE THIS

  • Amazing documentary. Ian Curtis was and remains a beautiful presence.

  • He was hot

  • my fave band of all time !

    R.I.P

    IAN CURTIS

    XOXOXO

  • Macho---Your comment is very logical. I deeply appreciate it. However, I still don't understand the difference you're making between Art/Serious music and Pop. Mozart and Beethoven are definitely serious, and definitely artistic, but can also be definitely boring. Joy Division can be bought at a store, yes. Joy Division is serious too. Is it Art? I consider Art to be anything with Drug--like qualities. Hyper-Realistic Not-Reality.

  • RIP IAN AND JOY DIVISION <3

  • This documentary is currently streaming on Hulu in its entirety, so see it while you can.

  • first time ive seen this video and it hurts

    really hurts

  • I was first introduced to this band when I was working at Borders Book store during college. It's broadened my musical horizons. I wish Ian never killed himself. His music was visionary.

  • Love will tear us apart again!

  • Hey, guys, I just uploaded Ian Curtis Tribute Video on my channel. It`s just final part of the movie called Control. I thought it was a very touching scene So, I hope you`re gonna like it. ...

In Loving Memory of Ian Curtis.

    Peace.

    TheGigsixstringAge.

  • I absolutley love Joy division and New order! There music is so real truthful and the beat it so lvoely it makes me want to escape. I first heard them in MArie Antoinette, usually it's be weird for a teen like me not listenign 2 lady gaga or miley cyrus it's unfortunate that there songs aren't player more everywhere.:) <3

  • Joy Division foi uma lenda e continuou a ser na minha opinião...

  • humi really need some cure to my loneliness

  • I've loved their music from the moment I first heard it -- spring of 1986, 6 years after Ian had already died. I was a metalhead at the time; JD sounds nothing like metal, yet I still instantly loved it. This movie has needed to be made for a very long time....

  • My FAV band ! Love these guys fuckin JOY DIVISION ROCKS!!!!!!

  • this trailer is epic!

  • where can you see this whole thing? seems fantastic.

  • i loved control

i thought it was unbelieavbly good

    but how's this documentary?

  • i liked control too, but i thought the documentary was a lot better

  • Joy Division (the documentary film) is the be all and end all as far as the band goes. The two other interpretations worth the time are Control and 24 hour Party People. Control, obviously since JD and, more specifically, Curtis, are the focus, and 24 hour Party People because it takes the absolute piss out of the whole load of bollocks.

  • make Joy Division #1 the UK for 18-05-10, it will have been 30 years since Ian passed, push Love will tear us Apart to the top, there is a facebook group

  • could you send me the link to the facebook group..i just seen the docudrama "control" last night.and im hooked

  • Probably the highest hit-ed video on youtube, by the way, that actually plays the PROPER full version of transmission!

  • This documentary is so, so good. My favourite of all the Joy Division films. It's a bit trippy.

  • Is this on DVD?

    Gryce

  • the horrors, interpol son mierda pura

  • Good documentary!

  • Can´t belive that they didn´t include Ian´s vocals in the trailer.

  • whats the first song?

  • "Transmission"

  • great doco...brought the dvd.

  • Ma che bello che era <3

  • "Joy Division changed the face of modern music"

  • What clip was the last few seconds of this video from?

  • I Love U Ian...

    RIP

  • "this one went on stage, because they had no fucking choice"

    whaaa? explain

  • i think he meant that because they were from Manchester they didn't have much chance of having a good life except being 'factory fodder' so they went on stage because it was their only way of getting away from it

  • @somebodygothurt

I don't think so, because then he would have been saying about all the Factory bands from Manchester.

  • In the film he's referring to one particular gig that they were doing when he said 'they had no fucking choice' so maybe he just meant in relation to the other bands that night in a place called Rafters. This was before they were signed to Factory as well so that might have been their appeal for him. That was just how I interpreted that statement.

  • I know exactly what statement you are talking about. I interpret it a bit differently, but I don't have the energy to go into it now.

  • Who cares?

  • like they were destined to do nothing but music.

  • For anyone who doesn't like documentaries but still wants to bathe in some Joy Division visual art, the film Control does a very damn good job.

  • Fantastic film.

It's here on youtube. Watch it!

  • Listen to Warsaw. It is one of my personal Favorites.RIP Ian Curtis.

  • is it just me or is Leaders of men one of the best songs :S

  • It's not just you. Leaders Of Men is awesome. It's better live, because it's a song that should be thrashed...the studio version is too slow. Live cuts of LOM rock in every sense of the word.

  • so true

  • its post punk..not pop

  • of couse its post punk but pop is like the basic of everything

  • @Taben92 post punk is pop

  • I love this crazy band!...eveline from Poland

  • What the hell is the word "pop" doing in this description of JD? Many pop bands have attempted to emulate their sound to a certain degree.. But to label them "pop" is an insult.

  • They mean "pop" in the sense of popular music, as in music that is brought to mass media in physical format and is contrary to "art/serious" music.

"Pop" music is basically anything that can be bought at a store and ranges from everything, be that rock, punk, rap or jazz.

"Serious" music is stuff like Mozart, Beethoven, Cage, Stockhausen, etc,

  • @machomanshippo I'm not agreeing, some electronical music, rock, jazz, blues and even rap are not "pop" music.

  • Of course it's 'pop'. That word is only an insult in the minds of those who like to pretend they have categorically better taste than the 'ignorant masses'. It's most often male rock fans who are prone to this insecurity. Pop wants to be your friend, from Billy Holliday to Joy Division to Lily Allen.

  • Good grief. You're in your 30s and you still don't know the meaning of pop in this context? Go out and learn a little a bout the world.

  • it's considered pop in it's era. not the same as pop today. music changes and so does what's "pop"

  • r.i.p. ian curtis

  • The songs are:

    1. Transmission

    2. Love will tear us apart

    3. Atmosphere

  • whats the song there playing

  • absolutely amazing story, ians voice and dancing works so well with the music,so original, looking back it was so apparent in the lyrics as to how strongly he felt about things, they dont make bands and music like this anymore

  • yeah technically ians voice does not have the greatest musical range but nonetheless its good and i like it, ive always loved the killers alot however they are copying jd's song for a reason, even if he hadnt died they still would have become famous as they would have went to america and been exposed to a massive audience, jd r better

  • fool!

  • but i guess i still like the movie and the music changes my opinion about ian though just by looking at him he wouldnt strike me as that type

  • im so sad i liked joy division and ian urtis but both ians wife deborah and bernard sumner says ian was a racist

  • are you serious?

    Damn.

Doesn't matter, Still a big influence on me!

  • Who cares. Do not mix the message with the messenger.

  • there are obviously several DVD´s around that are called "documentary." Which one is this trailer from ?

  • the documentart is just called joy division

  • fuck yeah

  • 0:46, Is that annik?

  • yes it is

  • fantastic documentary . one of the bests ever ...

  • i cant say anything because i havent seen this movie yet but Control was a damn good movie

  • the only thing joy division ever did that i didn't like was covering "sister ray" by the velvet underground.

they were incredible. i don't like new order.

  • Comment removed

  • I loved the epilespsi dance from Ian Curtis! Nice documentry vid & please check my "madchester anthems" video I just made.

  • saw this last night, effin awesome! :D

  • Joy Division were / are the most significant band since the Beatles.

But the movie, including "clips only", sucks.

  • The documentary is great. Gives a real feel of what JD were and a much truer picture of Curtis than "Control".

  • r.i.p ian curtis

  • i hope he will

  • I saw Joy Division live about 17 times. The mythologizing of them is sad, I think. Ian Curtis has become the Marilyn Monroe of the alt music scene.

I can still see the Annik of 1980 in her, except she has shorter hair. She over-romanticized everything even then.

  • 17 times must have meant something to you.

People need their mythology, it is much better than reality or even probably your memories...

  • Time to listen to my record of closer.

If only Ian was still around

  • Fucking awesome, fucking legends. Great Doc, amazing band, one of the bests ever.

  • Is that Bernhard Sumner with Ian Curtis at 0:39 ?

  • yeah its Bernard

  • its coming in france on february 25...i can't wait !

  • seen it it,s superb

  • What a great documentary. Grant Gee is always making wonderful films about extraordinary bands.

  • what is the real message of joy division???

if u are TRULY true to yourself u will be ok dead or alive

  • sometimes art has no message just artist creating beauty, that is the message just me in front of a canvas or guitar or notebook or even computer, that is art people creating and leaving marks in this world marks of humankind

  • wow that is an interesting comment. but are u implying that joy division's music has no message?? are u kiddin?? most of the music is about getting ready for death and accepting it

  • obviously Im not implying they have no message, just that art is not just the message, but the creation as a total

  • Not really,he used his talent. He broke away from the mess that had invaded his skin, and now his legacy lives on. His lyrics are so beautiful, ian lives on!

  • ian Curtis.. Wht a waste of a talented life..

  • I think Ian's life was more interesting than Kurt Cobain's, he is a cocksucker.

  • Fuckin hell! Ian actualy smiled and the end there.

  • brilliant

  • hey im new to joy division, what are their best songs?

    cheers.

  • I'd go for:

    - New dawn fades.

    - Decades.

    - She's lost control.

    - Love will tear us apart.

    - Transmission.

    - Atmosphere.

    - Dead souls.

But it's probably one of those bands that you might want to listen to album by album. Each will be quite a trip by itself.

  • I would say

    -Dead souls

    -Shadowplay

    -Transmission

    -She's lost control

    then

    -Love will tear us parat

  • also atmosphere and candidate are really good

  • I had the dvd but lost it...

  • Only if you fag's knew who Joy Division are.. They made the sound of what all these toy gay bands are today ... God rest your soul (Ian Curtis) You are a ROCK LEGEND!!!!!!!!

  • I love it when people know how history would of changed if one fucking band did not exist. They didn't make a fucking sound besides themselves. I am a big fan of Joy Division but you sure know how to suck a big musical cock. If you'd played music then you would see how hard it is to make good original music so fuck off you know it all bastard.

  • Sam Riley looks just like Ian Curtis in the film Control. (all about Joy Division) which i ust got finished watching. the way they made Sam look like Ian is amazing! they like twins, except they arent REALLY lookin like that now, but still... great film.

  • this movie or documentary showed me very much of the life they lived in manchester so i think this is a very good trailer and the story of JOY DIVISION.

  • Wow, new colour footage? Where is the 1:26 footage from?

  • Is this documentary posted on youtube?

  • everyone watch 24 Hour Party People

  • GREATEST MOVIE EVER!!!If it wasn't for that movie, i would has never been exposed to Joy Division, who are now one of my favorite bands.

  • Don't bother - it's crap! Watch this instead.

  • 24 Hour Party People is crap - don't watch that - watch this!

  • what's this documentarys name? is it just Joy Division? cause I want to see this one!

  • its control great film

  • this is actually for the joy division documentary simply called Joy Division. loads of unseen footage and great interviews. a fantastic piece of documentary work. Control is the film starring Sam Riley. Also a great film.

  • i just downloaded 24 hour party people and im going to watch it tonight..

  • I was so close to renting this movie last night.

  • you shoul buy it

  • is this documentary posted on youtube?

  • why even post a comment like that, get a fucking life

  • rip tony wilson

and of course ian curtis . shame i was too young to go to the hacienda . the hacienda are now apartments ....

  • Yeh its ridiculous, i went to Manchester hoping to see abit of history and all that was left was a few names inscribed on the wall of apartments which were once the Hacienda. Still pretty interesting to be honest. Imagine the ammount of people that stumbled into that canal after a night!!

  • Exellent band....Still sounds good today. A lot better than some of the crap thats about. Cheers! Joy Division.

  • energetic fun smart and loves this video

i liked this video :) oX

  • I loved this docu film they really did a great job finding actors that looked just like them...this story is so moving

    Ian Curtis is a Legend!!

  • I think you're referring to Control, the docu-drama based on Ian Curtis' life. This is a real documentary! All the interviewees, including the band members are REAL people, NOT actors!

  • i duno, im guna choose to say that they are kind of, alternative-ish, seems to me they sort of started that genre, either way, as ur man ses, there an amazing band

  • pop? did he say.... pop??? aaahhhh crap!!! one of my fave bands is fukin pop!!!

  • that is okay man. there is good pop and there is bad. however you choose to classify them, Joy Division were an amazing band.

  • i think he meant "pop" as the popular culture

    not as a music genre

  • "brian100pd".. pop is not a bad term, how ignorant of you. most bands have pop-elements in their music.. "alternative" is an example of music with pop elements... "jkgc" mention... "pop culter" which could be anything from "sonic youth" to nine inch nails" and "david bowie"... think about it.. RADIOHEAD is a pefect example of a band important in pop culter..

  • I totally agree.....also "pop" in the 70s was used completely different than it is used today

  • ah quit gettin ur knickers in a twist will ya, christ, i grew up listenin to pop, i learned the english language listenin to it, wat lexy69ing said is right, pop then was different, but you hav to admit, pop of the 21st century is a discrace........... mmmm pancakes

  • aaaw.. nevermind. you don't get what i'm saying.... discrase?? i happen to think they're some great bands in our present time...

  • The word pop here does not mean a music genre, but as music that is popular and modern as opposed to old folk and classical music.

  • Such an amazing band. There's no other band like them and there never will be.

  • Hey!! Does anyone know the title of the 1st song we can listen in this trailer please?

  • The first song of the trailer is "Transmission."

  • passionate one
