  • What Shepherd is saying at the beginning of this bit explains exactly why books like the one Stephen E. AMbrose wrote about the building of the Union Pacific Railroad make such great reading. Trains were a fact of life where I grew up. For years I took the commuter train to work, and the train from work into New york to see the Yankees. A friend was killed trying to make his train, another took his own life on the tracks when he felt all was lost. Thanks for another great bit.
