@9musicman7 No, regular strings. But you have to tune them wayyy down. I talked to a guy who played this way, and he said it was way easier than it looks.

@9musicman7 it's all down to preference really, i'd say it depends on your personal finger strength/callous etc. just experiment. mine are a mixture of different gauges due to snaps and spares and i still get a nice sound!

actually, modern steel string guitars (like the one Erik has in this video) were designed to be played on the lap like that. Any acoustic guitar that is not a nylon string classical guitar wasn't designed to be played sitting upright like most people do today. So actually, if you have an acoustic guitar that isn't a nylon string classical, you are playing it wrong, not him. =P
