I wish some of the NY and LA Cabaret chick singers would listen to this stuff more often. It's weird....but to find this quality....you have got to move on to a different planet. To sing with Clifford Brown, Oscar Pittiford and Jimmy Jones....you had to sing that good or these cats wouldn't do the gig! About the only female singer out there today that could do this song this good, is Natalie Cole.
Helen's voice is pure smoke and honey. I wish she was better known in her own country. I think we don't appreciate true talent because we rarely hear it. Thank you YOUTUBE!
oh Madame Merrill!!!!! That is the sexiest voice of all the ages, while still being perfect with regard to form. A Jazz singer par excellence ... Ive often wondered if Marilyn Monroe had some Helen Merrill records at her house....her singing was VERY similar, but never better than La Merrill.
A San Francisco radio station in the late 50s-early 60s-- maybe KSFO?-- used the first few bars of "What's New?" as a lead-in to its news segment. I didn't know the title of this song at that time but when I found out I remember thinking "How cool." Cheers.

I cannot believe I never heard Ms. Merrill before. I am shocked to hear this song, sung so movingly and gorgeously.

Ah, brings back childhood memories. She still sounds fresh and original after all these years.

She owns this song. An amazing performance by a 24 year old, mature beyond her years, with the assurance and courage to sing slowly. Unforgettable.

Recomiendo escuchar a John Coltrane interpretando What's new?
También a Clifford Brown and Sarah Vaughan
Thank you so much es a great pleasure to enter in you tube.Mi life changed after I knew this page.Is much more than a webpage. Thanks again

Questo bellissimo tema di Bob Haggarth
"What is new!"è qui riproposto dalla voce
oltre-oceano,molto raffinata,intellettuale
