There's a controversy. Some people say there wasn't a moto accident but an accident when he was serving to Navy. Where is the true? And of course, Jerry Butler sang it better. We don't must forget it is a "live" rendition with its natural failures; but Gene Vincent's voice is very very more pretty than Butler's.
Gene was one of the greatest rockers ever but his voice could be so beautiful I could cry. To sing with such tenderness whilst clearly in so much physical pain is astounding.
In July 1955 he was involved in a severe motorcycle accident that shattered his left leg which left him with a permanent limp and chronic pain for the rest of his life. He was severely injured in the car crash which claimed the life of his buddy Eddie Cochran. He died October 12. 1971.
I was there as a teenager in the 1950's, my dad owned a "record shop" where the latest releases were bought, people could listen to them in glass booths. I always got them first! I remember when Elvis' first single was released. I was 14 in 1955 so the next decade was pretty fabulous. But I liked the music of the early 50's too. And all of the 1940's. I teethed on the Big Band Era music.
@lilarose1941 Too bad you still don't have the records from your dad's record shop. You must have had a lot of fun in school being the first one to know when the new songs came out.
The Jerry Butler version is of course the most well known version. But, Gene's slant is so beautiful. What a magnificent talent. What a loss. What a legasy.
I saw Gene Vincent at the London Palladium in Nov 1969, he was backed by the Wild Angels. About ten years ago the original Blue Caps reformed and appeared at the London Rockers Reunion Concert. Gene died in October 1971.
It's because in 1955 he had a severe motorcycle accident that shattered his left leg and refused to have it amputated, the leg was saved, but left him with a permanent limp and considerable chronic pain for the rest of his life. He spent a considerable time in a Navy hospital
First time hearing this version. I heard the original first many years ago and have loved every cover I've ever heard. It really is just a beautiful song meant to be sung and heard.
Lol...yeah, I went back and watched again after this comment. Lol..he's really working this thing out...even if you can't hear him playin', his smolder is on eleven.
can someone with 1/2 brain explain to me what the comment"grow up fag and take the buttplug..." has to do with this music?? besides a homophobe getting off oline..youtube seems to have more than their share of these morons
age 40,slim,goodlooking,keeps fit, looking for single females, couples, for sexy fun,or friendship.now single after 13 years. time to try new things, got a gsoh. so come on dont be shy give me a try.........
Jerry Butler was 18 years old when he penned this song - can you imagine that?? What a gorgeous melody. Thanks for bothering to share this! Please check out my video of this very song performed live by the Ernie Williams Band in 2006...
His leg. In May 1955, in Norfolk VA a woman (yep!)driver jumped the lights and smashed into him. His leg was almost severed at the shin, but doctors managed to re-set the bones. Vincent -so desperate to get back to performing- never gave the bones a chance to knit properly...a move which caused him pain for much of the rest of his life. Said to be one of the reasons to his heavy drinking.
I can't understand people who must write bad about a performer, in this case Gene. It's no damn competition and if you don't like it, crawl back to your cave and suck on your thumb. What's your big problem? Too big empty ego? Not getting laid?
God bless sweet Gene Vincent, and respect and love to all his many fans. Sad that the likes of the guy talking about the great Otis and insulting this performance can't appreciate another wonderful and much-missed artist.
Grabar2- - you keep talking about buttplugs , fag and ass in all your comments. Being homosexual is nothing for you to be ashamed of grabar20 - all of those gay videos you have in your favourites eh !

Call me crazy, but Gene Vincent was a natural for ballads. that beautiful falsetto is the best ive heard. He makes Roy Orbison, Jeff Buckley.....all of them sound average!! i love his rock and roll....but ballads was where this mans beauty shone strongest.

@joriszsz Nowadays I think the instruments play themselves. Not a bad job but Jerry Butler and Solomon Burke are the 1st`s, incredible.
