I know there are some groups out there who rescue these dogs from being skinned alive for their fur in China. To anyone wanting one as a pet, from what I've seen/heard/read, they adapt very well. It wouldn't hurt to do a little extra research to save one of these gorgeous dogs from suffering through hell by being skinned alive, just to have the people lie and say the fur is "faux."
I wonder if you can buy them as pets? They kill them for coats anyway... what would be the harm in keeping it as a pet at least it wouldn't get killed by chinese people! ha ha
You can due to their remarkable powers of adaption. However you need to find a breeder and they are mostly in Asia and Europe. You also need to check is exotic pets are legal and if they are, do they require a license in your state/county. Read up on it before you decide to get one. They are omniverous like all canines but double check on that.
the common name of the species has absolutely nothing to do with the animal's genetic background. it is neither a dog or a raccoon, you dumbass. it's actually more closely related to the fox family.

I saw a video on YOU TUBE of a raccoon dog which was hung up on a piece of wire and skinned while struggling to get away, then they dumped it's body onto a pile of others and while it was laying there it managed to lift it's head up and look into the camera. I felt so sorry for it. It has been through hell!

I can't believe how callous the Chinese are, as they breed them on farms specially for their fur. They even get skinned alive in China, which is absolutely sick!

I saw a video on YOU TUBE of a raccoon dog which was hung up on a piece of wire and skinned while struggling to get away, then they dumped it's body onto a pile of others and while it was laying there it managed to lift it's head up and look into the camera. I felt so sorry for it. It has been through hell!
