  • You had to be so precise in your timing and remember where each monster was gonna come from it was a real labour of love to complete.

  • Very nice graphics and sound, but like a lot of computer games of the day, ridiculously diffucult and frustrating with a crappy ending.

  • This game broke me as a child.

  • Shadow of the Beast: Wherein any problem can be solved if you punch it enough times.

  • OMG THAT GIANT WITH THE TOE IS THE LAST BOSS!?

That's the furthest I ever got! The feeling that I'm feeling right now must be what it's like to have a nerd rage. OH MY GOD.

  • And lo! the Beast Lord received a stubbed toe of such terrible magnitude that he had no choice but to cancel his plans for world domination, at least until it got a bit better.

  • I wish I could punch a ghost in the face

  • how did those top 2 comments from the same person get so many thumbs up? wheres the logic? does this person have 40 computers and thumb themself up like corporations are starting to do on video's her on youtube that have millions of views in order to advertise? wheres the logic and why?

  • I am suddenly glad I never bothered completing this. The final boss involves a slow moving giant trying to squish you with a club while you attempt to give him an ingrowing toenail.

Just how did that defeat him!?

  • I just noticed something really weird.

The sound effect of that gun. It's just like a pulse rifle or Smartgun from Aliens!

  • I'm impressed someone had the patience to finish this game

  • I saw this game running in a computer store in my home town years ago....was totally blown away then. Still love its style now. Great vid.

  • Whoever completed this game can call himself A True Master In Gaming.

  • good job mate. this is a hard game and u have done it. good job really good job!

  • Whoa, what kind of inappropriate content in the video were you wrongly accused of?

  • i remember beating the jetpack boss for the first time. i thought he was the last boss. then i see" castle graveyard" FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU

  • PUNCH THAT TOENAIL!

  • So thats how it finished!!!

  • The sound effect of the gun is actually a sample of the pulse rifles from the 1986 movie Aliens :)

  • @SPeacock Holy shit you're right. Well spotted (heard) that man.

  • @sattfield Thank you :) Nothing escapes me when it comes to sound effects.

  • Dang, that couldn't have been closer. I forgot how insane this game was. Also, it's only competition was the 8 bit NES when it came to gaming.

  • I'd like to see this game (and the Beast trilogy) get the AVGN treatment :)

  • If they made this game harder, the universe would have imploded.

  • ridiculous!

  • So amazing back then but so tedious now!

  • Good to know squishy eyeballs are only immune to fists, not bullets =D

  • God damn - how far we've progressed - how utterly BORING the gameplay of this is, compared to say, God of War 1/2/3 these days! Wow. Don't get me wrong I was one of the biggest Amiga fans back in the day :)

  • @neezer77 don't diss old school, that's where new school comes from

  • @neezer77 I think you misunderstand. Nobody said this was a good game -- people praised it for its graphics, its music and atmosphere. Not so much for the gameplay. You can think of it as the Crysis of its own time. (That is, if Crysis had any music or atmosphere...)

  • @Savior1024

I thought Crysis was pretty good, but Crytek didn't learn their lesson from FarCry, and ruined the 2nd half with typical indoor Doom3 gameplay. Exploring the island and planning different angles of attack was really good fun, but by Jove Crytek really fucked it all up.

  • Love the 1 life at the end :)

  • Thanks for posting this video, I've never seen this game completed before :)

  • I think the last boss will have a severely ingrown toenail after that hammering

  • now that Sony owns Psygnosis(now known as Studio Liverpool), wouldn' it be absolutely O.D. cool if they remade this masterwork of surrealist gaming? and the icing on that cake: 1)give it the GOW engine...hell, even give AArbarron the Beast Kratos voice-actor, and2)all the artwork be COMPLETELY made by H.R. Giger(the guy who designed Aliens and Predator)! whatcha guys think?

  • @triplestar100 Either that, or remake the whole series as downloads for the PS3 via PlayStation Network :)

  • Comment removed

  • @SPeacock definately needs to be compilated in some way

  • @SPeacock I bloody wish!

I also can never work out why the last boss is a mouldy toe. It always used to make me chuckle.

  • Blimps traverse the parrallax skies above surreal landscapes as you PUNCH flying eyeballs, avoiding bloodied claws and groping hands thrusting at you from the ground, all while listening to some of the coolest computer game music in existence a that time.

W_T_F were the devs smoking? This game is truly surreal.

  • @goldsak surreal landscapes? lmao i love dumbass people who try to use words incorrectly to sound smart. Please tell us how clouds and mountains are surreal? oh and grass! cause..thats the landscape.

  • @lawlawlowned

Was I was trying to use a word incorrectly to sound smart? I don't think that even makes sense. You mean I was trying to sound smart, but i used the word incorrectly? There's a great irony here.

Besides your not making sense, have you ever seen complex mountain formations like that? If so, where? They are far from rational and some seem to defy gravity and are reminiscent of Roger Dean's twisted formations. Then the scale of the blimp and moon confuse the image further, I think.

  • I remember faintly playing this when I was about five

  • Nice one. I completed this yonks ago and, my god, the amount of ball aching runs I had to do just to finish this harsh game. The crap end congratulations screen was a bit of a kick in the balls but I took a picture of it to prove to my mates I did it anyway XD

  • Wow that was an...interesting....final boss =P The dreaded infected foot of dewm.

  • all that so he didn't have to stand in some big beast's shadow...

well, that's kind of funny, though... beating the crap out of his infected foot until he keels over!

  • @krononomikon

Maybe I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the protagonist is a man, cursed with the form of a beast, i.e. the shadow of a beast... or something.

  • @goldsak according to the manual, the Beast Lord is the big bad guy, and his dark priests stole him away as a child and turned his body over the years with potions etc. to be the "warrior messenger of the Beast". Now when you kill the Beast Lord at the end of the game, it says you're freed from the shadow of the Beast. While I think it was meant figuratively like standing under him in fear, I joked about it literally as if he was so big that his shadow was the problem :)

  • @krononomikon wow...thats...not funny at all.

  • @lawlawlowned thanks for taking time out of your day just to tell me :)

  • I WANT THIS GAME!!!

  • lol never realised punching a toenail would kill a giant monster

    shite game great music

  • Never knew about this game before watching this video.

The artwork is quite cool and the environments are also quite unique. The gameplay seems a little weak.

I love how when you punch someone it sounds like a gun shot.

He can also even punch a ghost! Makes me want to punch a ghost in the FUCKING FACE!

  • @aimbotjesus

This guy can punch FLYING AXE HEADS. He is the man! (beast)

  • why did they make this game sooooo hard, I struggle with this game now, let alone when I was 10!

  • Congratulations, you have freed yourself from the Shadow of the Beast?

That's the same ending as the Genesis/Mega Drive version.

  • I've never seen the ending to this game, you gotta work on those karate kicks!!!

  • You've obviously invested a great deal of time playing this game... I haven't seen it completed without the cheat mode enabled before. Quite impressive.

  • lol bloodfreak yes this had a feel good factor that you just cant get from modern games thank you for providing the ending of which i could never get to (",)

  • Restarts after death were a pain, and considering the intro pics and music, an ending in a silmalar vein would have been nice. Really loved this game though - wonderful graphics and fx for the time - if a little flat looking.

  • THANK YOU!

This game is the game i hated the most and still hate the most up to this day. Thank you for wasting your time learning the maze and freaking pathern of every ridiculous floor for the sake of showing me this nice ending.

but really i hate this game and will never lay my hand on anything related to it. 5stars

  • woot Shadow of the Beast this one brings back memories. The Amiga was well ahead of its time such ashame they're not around anymore. Shadow of the Beast was one of the hardest games on the Amiga. The farthest I got was to like the end of the 2nd movie =P Should use the running jump kick more on the big flying enemies.

  • Epic toenail battle o.O

  • It is quite similar to the Mega Drive version

By the way the Master System version, although inferior of course, has a decent ending: it shows the hero being transformed into human and running along the valley

  • And that concludes our trip down Memory Lane. Thanks horsie! By the way, quite awesome the fact that you beat it that time with only one hit point. Made the video a bit stressful in the end. Thumbs up!

  • One of the best games ever made for ANY system. Awesom music, sound, graphics, animation, effex, etc, etc. Its a pity that youtube's 30 frames/sec cannot capture the 60 frames/sec animations of SOTB. It's very apparent when the player gets "touched" and dissapears, when he's just blinking at 60 frames/sec. Oh well...

  • Good graphics and meditative music but the level of difficulty is too hard. Almost no one will get to the final levels, and I think you have to guess too much, it´s not only reaction time, you simply have to guess where to stand and when to do something. That´s not good gameplay.

  • Erm, no, that is an ignorant comment. The originalk Shadow of the Beast had VERY ordinary gameplay, but was more of a graphics and sound showcase, so defiantely had merit.

The second Beast improved gameplay considerably, and whilst not a gameplay masterpiece, was actually very good. The third Beast game was better again, gameplay wise, had some clever puzzles, context music, good graphics, smooth scrolling.... erm, exactly what more diud you want from it? Should it be able to wash your car?

  • assuming that is the foot of a giant...well played! :-)

  • I forgot all about beating the hell out of the giant toe at the end of this. Thanks again for posting! Great nostalgia!

  • Wow thanks! I put hours into this game back in highschool but never came close to finishing it. You have to be a ninja to beat this game! Thanks for doing this video!

  • wow what an epic ending. thank fuck i never bothered to put in the hours to complete this piece a shit i would of felt well ripped off !!! still nice tunes tho and the gfx on the outside parts still still look as cool as they did back in 89 only a little less so cos of ths shitty youtube quality. ah well at least its not shadow of the beast 2

  • Ì agree. Pretty lame game. Can't fucking pathom how your comment could get -2

  • Shadow of the Beast may not be the pinnacle of gameplay, but the gfx and sound were absolute milestones when it was released. Your comment gives away the fact that you are very young and probably do not understand the impact this game had when released. It probably helps if you keep in mind this game was released in 1989, when PC games were usually 4 colour CGA, or if you were lucky, 16 colour EGA, had no sound except for the beeping of a 2" internal speaker and could just about manage 3 sprites

  • The year being 1989 should still be no excuse for creating such a lame ending. If you think about it it's plain out stupid given how revolutionary every other aspect of this game were.

  • ??? Erm, who even mentioned the ending?! Weird. Anywho, who cares about the ending? You play a game to experience the game.... not slug through just to see some boring non-interactive ending. The graphics, sound, playability, learning curve etc are all vastly more important than any ending.

Besides, how many games can you name from 1989 that had some extravagant ending? Not many.

  • I'll quote CK2890: "wow what an epic ending". He was obviously being sarcastic, and my comment was directed as sympathy for his criticism in the lame ending.

I think it is a pity that a great game can only produce such a meager ending, wich give no real "satisfaction" whatsoever.

  • The game im most proud of finishing is the original HalfLife and that ending wasnt so great either haha

  • i think it's funny how the developers knew people would be seeing the game over screen way more than the ending so they put more epic music and graphics in the game over screen. i love how you defeat the boss by punching his foot, haha.

..and that pulse rifle is definitely stolen from Aliens, but there was quite a bit of 'borrowing' of sounds and graphics from other sources back in those days, before everyone started suing each other. Psygnosis fucking own.

  • Ouh YEAH! This IS definitly the most awesome Game EVER!

  • I never realised that the final boss was a rotten foot, I always thought it was a animal carcass!

Anyway, the concept of fighting a gigantic zombie whilst he trys to pound you to slush with a pestle I find disturbing

  • Kinda reminds me of World 3 on Blood Money.

For those of you who remember

  • I remember

  • This is he part I always died...thanks for showing the end!

  • 1 hit point left......flukey bugger:P

    Nice run though:)

  • Tops!! Thanks for posting.

  • no you are right, the game was bad even back then, it had great music and graphics but the gameplay itself was almost non existant

  • A bit anticlimactic at the end! Still an awesome game though... ...brings back fond memories.

  • Not a perfect game but a great and classic one. The graphics, parallax scrolling and the music were fabulous at the time, and the game cover was one of the best i've ever seen. Too bad about some bosses though, they're quite ridiculous, especially the last one. The image of that nasty foot still haunts me to this day. Thanks for uploading.

  • this endboss and ending sucks!!!

  • The gun sample is from Aliens!

  • oh yeah lol

  • What do you think of the boss in the middle of this video?

  • Weak, yet bizarre. But the most bizarre is of course the finishing line bad guy.

  • its music had me mesmerized the whole time!

  • Love the pulse rifle sound from Aliens :D

  • Suck ending for such a cool and memorable game.

  • BEAST: Ah, that laser rifle and jet pack were useful and fun. But I don't suppose I'll need them anymore: not once I'm out in the open air. There won't be anything dangerous in the graveyard, I'm sure. I'll just leave them here by the door, in case anyone else wants them.

  • Right, they are not mine, it's important to respect other people's properties.

  • Fantastic game and for me the best of the SOB triology, I never saw the final screen at end before... even I've played with trainer coz my second disk were demaged then ;)

  • Wow, what a shitty ending.

"Congratulations, after many hours of having your ass handed to you on a plate, here's a congratulatory screen!"

  • As if random bolts of lightning werent bad enougth you get giant spikes too.

  • nr1 dude thx for the good time i spend it watching shadow of the beast refreshing my memory xD

  • Awesome. The furthest I got was the jetpack level. I can still hear the loud clacking of the crappy red joystick I used to play this game when I watch this video.

  • so it can be done without cheating

i played it with the cheat and i thought to myself

"goddamm there no way it could be done without cheating.. did they ever game tested this !?!) :)

  • hardest game ever made.

  • WOW...and with 1 health left!

  • some of the most ridiculous level design ever.

  • And i thought the C64 version was hard!!!!

  • This game smoked me. WD!

  • These Amiga games have some of the lousiest endings. All that trouble to punch someone in the toe a few times and then a screen and that's it. Just wow. It was a pretty funny fight, though. I'm expecting this epic battle where he's climbing all over his body, taking out all his major vital spots but no, he just punches his big toe a couple dozen times and he turns into sparkles. Some beast.

  • No shortage of skill there. Congrats

  • It creeped me out a lot the castle part, with those jumping bodies (specially the floating one around a ladder xD) but hey, I would play it again if there is a slightly chance to build up a 3D one with the current technology (and a more deeper plot, heh).

I am free from the evil foot and hand of evil!

Thanks for the upload. Good run :)

  • Is that the whole game oO man...i thought there would be more than that, ive played it as i was 7 years old, and i wasnt able to understand even a bit because it was in english...but this is really nothing lol.

  • Great run! Many a joystick met it's untimely end whenever I played this game.

  • Good run

  • Wow...you have an amazing mastery of the jump kick. It's so ackward no one uses it...but you make it work. Impressive.

  • So he went through all that just to trim a toenail???

Seriously, I'm trying to get through this game myself at the moment. I can through the 'flying' section but with a couple of health points left, I just have to master the last section. Good vid.

  • Did it!! Took me 18 years, but I did it :)

  • Damn, 18 years, huh? Well, I think the Amiga version is harder than the Genesis version and easier at the same time:

    -harder: more enemies

-easier: no flashing when you get hurt, just disappear!

  • The gunshot's sound sounds like a machinegun sample from the Aliens 2 movie. Also, I had never seen the last boss, and indeed it looks like something out of Monty Python!

  • vaya mierda juego

  • So, this is the end? I made it so close, too. So you pound on Monty Python's foot to win? laughs* Also, one of the bosses seems like he's a vague tribute to something from R-Type.

    ~Ra'akone

  • wooo ! 1 hp left ^^ Thanks for posting this...

Still magic after all these years :)

  • this was my childhood dream game

    wow, how fast days pass

  • This game was incredible for it's time. A wild imagination went into making this one.

  • I beat this when I was young and was very proud to have done so. This is truly a hard game to beat with no cheats. But,the ending...can you get any worse. I mean, the hardest game gets the lamest ending:-x

  • Good stuff! That is one REALLY disappointing last boss though.
