The lyrics of 905 describe a cloned human implanted with memories instead of having an actual childhood, and was created to serve an unspecified purpose and is unable to do anything else. He knows though that at least at the end of his life his soul will be free from his manufactured existence.
Not really sure why but I always thought this was one of the best songs off of who are you I bought it way back when it came out on vinyl and I still have it on vinyl.
I remember when I first heard this song decades ago.. Where the fuck is that alien sci-fi sound coming from? From Pete, of course, one of the rock guitarists to mess around with wave generators and syns..
This song is pretty much about our society now today where we have really Lame music and Lame unintelligent celebrities leading us into early graves. It's a shame people - the drug addicted morons who run our music industry suck ,..and they need to quit signing shitty artists ages 16 through 25,.... Maybe the music business should sign older talent and forget the money - before they destroy us all !! We need bands today like the Who ,..or else !!
@GreenhouseEffectGE accually it was supposed to be the starting of a rock opera wrriten about a world of test tube babies whos pasts and futures are already decied and implanted in their heads and are assigned by numbers. I bet it would have been awsome if they accually made the entire album but it just never happened probably because Keith died and Kenny just didnt fill that driving force that Keith had
For the longest time after this was released I thought it was Pete singing, no wonder their backing vocals always sounded so harmonious, John and Pete's voices are very similar.
i bought this album 10 years ago or sumthin when i was like 11 or sumthin john is truly the most underrated singer songwriter musician that i kno of he totally inspired me to play the bass and half the songs i kno on bass r played by him r.i.p. john
it pains me every time i mention "Keith Moon" to someone, and they look confused. then i say "y'know. the best drummer to ever have lived on the earth?" and they STILL don't know. i can't believe people my age listen to this pop and rap shit, and this stuff is still floating around among the music nerds. i have infinite respect for The Who.
rap blows.........the who is one of the greatest bands to make music........i'll walk over you to see the who in '82........music industry is in said shape now......auto tune makes anyone a star.
Great song about the western civilization and Technological nightmares to corporate greed to invent something new to entertain the human endless desire to Test Tube baby, cloning Genetically modified Brinjal everything to imitate mother nature untill man become a creator of endless waste but he misses out on one crucial thing called the eternal truth
Youth today should be ashamed... 22k hits for 1 of the best bands ever and an amazing tune. What I wouldn't do to see these guys again in concert. Raw talent and energy. These guys introduced creative rock to the world. Wasn't just strumming a guitar and hitting a snare.
@USAForLife2057 According to TVtropes, this song "features a clone, who is presumably the 905th iteration of the line, lamenting his inability to do anything original whatsoever."
@CuseGrappler I am serious. you are right. there are a lot of bands tied for #1 but the who with kieth moon are up there at the top. he was sitting there in the "not to be taken away chair". on the cover. it gives me goose bumps and i am a hard-core grave-robber. i would like to dig kieth moon up. and waterboard him.
yeh i was 37 today and today too. this song was good back then and will be be when it was made last year. i know you care about how old i am. i prolly shouldve said 14 or somethin so i sound hip and rebellious. I LISTEN TO THE WHO BUT U PROLLY HAVENT HEARD OF THEM CUZ THEYRE SO OBSCURE JUST LIKE THIS BAND ACDC I LIKE. IM SO DIFFERENT AND HAVE SUCH UNIQUE MUSIC TASTE YOU WOULDNT BELIEVE IM ONLY 14.
The story goes that Keith Moon was having a tough time recording this album and during the recording of this song his playing was so erratic that the band pulled him aside and told him if he didn't pull it together they would have to sac him and find another drummer. Not sure if the story is true but by most accounts it is and Keith did get it together and got thru the sessions. At the tme he was trying to overcome a huge drinking problem which made playing sober a tough prospect.
@LightenUpMcGraw Not sure if this is true, but I do know that the reason music must change has no drums is that he couldn't play them right in time-so they just took them out
Thank you. I pride myself on being a Who fan, but never really listened to this song.
I was working on a paper in the library and clicked on a "Who Play List" and this song came up. I instantly got into the groove and loved it.
Then I tried finding the song, but couldn't find it since I am dyslexic. I kept googling "The Who 950" and was getting pissed off and questioning my sanity.
@TheSpanna96 Plus the greatest drummer ever! The greatest front man ever and the best guitarist ever(does jimmy page or hendrix windmill or play with passion and pain? or smash a guitar better?)
@dbohnenkamper Not to take anything away from Jimmy or Jimi, there is some truth to your point of play 'with pain'
I saw The Who perform in 1989,where about 2/3's of the way through the concert, Pete, during one of his signature windmill stokes sliced his finger wide open. Lots of blood. He continued playing until the encore, when finally it was so bad he went to get a few stiches. The really amazing part, is Roger then picked up a guitar and played Hendrix's 'Hey Joe' . a great finale!
jimmy page took kieth moon out of chair the who tried to protect him in. entwistle (now 777 not 905) didn't die in vegas yet. he will eventually he's in a cia witness protection situation.
I'm 47,I bought this album when it 1st came out in 1978. I was 17 and "cloning" and "reincarnation" was the big concepts back then. I remember trying to imagine what it be like to be a replicated version of myself without a soul. It was a scary proposition and this song was on heavy rotation in my head the whole time. I loved it then and I love it today. Thankyou John Entwistle and The Who!
This is one of the most awesome little-known Who songs. Brilliant. There's this Italian teenager on YouTube named millymoon who videos herself singing rock tunes and she does this one. It's great to think that some teenager somewhere not only loves this song but is willing to put a video of themselves singing it on YouTube. The Who rule.
Awesome song! Awesome band! I am 35 and have loved The Who since I was 12 thanks to my mom. She is jammin' now with Moon and The Ox upstairs. Rock on mom!
Always my Favorite Who song, 1st heard it on a cassette of "Live at Leeds" when I was 16. 37 now, still gets me the same way. Thanks for posting this.

This song is the worst because of the fact hey used my most HATED chord progression ever,
i never will learn to love this song or listen to it because of those chords.
no its a joke, but still i hate thosse chords, they ruined todays music.
jamirosmajicrocks 1 month ago
@jamirosmajicrocks it goes C G Am F then C G F C. it is an incredibly simple chord progression. any asshole that knows basic chords can play with
Edhunter1995 2 weeks ago
@Edhunter1995 Well it doesnt matter if its simple or basic, but it has been used so much times it just annoys the crap out of me.
