herb brooks really inspires me a lot. i wish i could the same but with the us soccer team in the world cup. he said that we shoul all have dreams and thats mine.
its so surreal and like a dream. i cant believe that happened. its incredible, miraculous, and patriotic. its the best victory of all time. i also like the giants over the patriots in the super bowl as the 2nd best victory ever but this is by far the best.
@fagsaaaa not really, cuz it turned out that michigan wasn't all that good...they were rated high, but they weren't in the same league as ohio state or other top schools that year. didn't they end up having 5 losses that year?
@Danimal14222 I think he mixed in the television feed with the radio call of the game. I don't remember who the broadcaster was because i tried to stay away knowing the game was to be shown on tape delay by abc-tv that evening!!
@maddog17v the 1981 made for TV movie is better imo. it was called MIRACLE ON ICE starring karl malden as Herb Brooks and Steve Guttenberg as Jim Craig......they used real game footage, it was well done.
Hey bayramukov, do you really think we care near as much now about beating the Rusians. Differant time all together. Kids against pro's back then. We were not supposed to win, that is what made this so special. You can have the stupid gold now. I am not implying I am not rooting for USA, but like I said. Differant time bro.
Let the person who posted this...It's Great to hear Dream On (Aerosmith) Singing over the Fabulous Minute...Plenty of place 2 listen to it with No Music....
This time we'll get you)))))) I have a bet $500 that we'll meet US team in finals and win ))) To be honest - We sucked though this year Olimpics.... But hockey - you ain't getting it )))) No hard feeling... we'll see in a couple of days))
what the hell is with all the ")))))))))))))))"??? also its "olYmpics" so if you are going to try and offend us americans, please do it right. Or do they not teach you that in russia..
I certainly don't call it a fluke that the USA beat Russia on that fateful day because it was no fluke that they were in a position to win gold in the first place,You're only going to be lucky so many times!
that guy patting herb brooks on the back at about 5:25 is my grandpa...we have soo much stuff from the olympics...verchota s stick, janaczak s stick,...after they won the gold medal, the whole team got special pins only issued to the guys on the team and Phil Verchota gave his to my grandpa and we still have it
It will never happen again because there is no way they will be that big of an underdog like that, in the middle of the cold war on top of it, and the fact that USSR team hadn't lost a game in a couple decades in hockey.
This kind of reminds me of the 2007- 2008 Kansas Jayhawks basketball team vs heavily favored Memphis, 2007-2008 New York Giants vs New England Patriots. I know Canada has GREAT hockey teams and players but this is about america, THE BEAUTIFUL. BTW HAPPY NEW YEAR!
how many times have we heard coaches say " you don't have to be the best team overall..... just the best team that day" and that's what happened. Also when the soviet coach Tikonov pulled tretiak it really energized the U.S. team.
We need to use college kids again in the olympics because we suck i hope we can do good in the olympics but i just think russia and sweden have the better teams but just maybe their can be another miracle thirty years later GO USA!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A week befor the Olympic Games started, the US team lost against the Soviets with 3:10.
And then, they beat Czechoslovakia with 7:3, played a 2:2 with the Swedens, won the last game against Finnland, did not lost a game and by the way beat the best team that ever existed. Its a little bit to much miracle for me. Did someone think about doping?
Seriously? You honestly believe that a handful of college students in the 1980s took "miracle steriods" that starting having an effect a right away. How about heart & determination carried them to this miracle- they were losing at some point in every olympic game? Has society lost so much faith in their athletes that they think every great accomplishment is a product of steroids? There is a difference, for example, btwn hitting 73 home runs & say boise state beating oklahoma in a bcs bowl game.
@777CYB777 dude i'm sorry i live in hockeytown minnesota and i have seen some amazing shit when it comes to hockey and this ain't no steroids our hockey team was 25n 22 going into state and we lost we were the best in minnesota ranked #1 all the way and we fucking lost. but the year before that we were 23 n 6 going into state and we won no one saw it comming but the heart and soul those players took was unbelievable. if u have heart and soul for the game u can win and nothing is inpossible
If there was ever a time in American history where hope was needed; it would be now. None of these guys on team USA did well in professional hockey. Some may see that as a bad thing. But, to me I see it differently. These guys were just college kids. They went up against the best the world had to offer - and won. It goes to show that we should stop looking for heros and focus on pushing ourselves to limits we do not think are possible. You may be surprised how far you can go!
I saw this game live on tv when I was a kid. I played hockey and I remeber how amazing this was. NOONE gave the US a chance. But god was on their sid ethat day.
I was a freshman in high school when I watched every game they played. When the final minutes played out and they won I cried. I will never forget that day. It was a turning point for America; those were hard times and the country needed a win. When I watched the movie it was just as emotional. The greatest win in history, one of the greatest stories ever told, and i got to witness it.
About the Canada cup was great hockey but that could've went either way you had the greatest hockey players playing for canada.Usa was college kids beating the best team of the past 20 years, was like beating the packers of the 60's niners of the 80's steelers of the 70's but they were college kids and pulled it off get over the jealous you canucks
man that's awesome. I watched a big documentary on it once and it was when russia had american hostages or something. After this game Russia was all disgraced. Some guy wassaying "first of we lost. Second they were American. Third they were college kids" it's so cool
DCMAC, I disagree...Winnipeg Jets were comprised of older, professional players, including a certain Bobby Hull character who was instrumental in their 5-3 victory...Team USA was comprised of solely amateur players, mostly from different collegiate squads. That is what made it such a 'miracle' victory, between that and getting whipped 10-3 a few days before the start of the Olympics.
I just want to say, it was a 4-3 victory and also that I agree fully it was such a Miracle, but past that they were a very conditioned team with Brooks' drills and a good number of them were very promising players from their colleges.
ya but the russians were also a very well conditiond team that could easily outskate most teams and dominated almost every team for 15 years. they had great strategy and were experienced. this was a huge mismatch, but somehow the us came out on top
i believe this was the best hockey game ever but about canada and the USSR im srry but the red army USSR team was the best team in hockey history through 1970-1980
No more comments about Canada, im sick of them considering they have nothing to due with this video. Canada has great hockey teams and players and so did the USSR, i dont care who was better. This video is about a great sports and cultural moment in american history
fuck everyone. this team was just made up of ignorant kids, who got their acts together became a team and beat the greatest team ever..jealousy is a sad thing and all u foreigners are fuckin full of it cause u got nothin on america
gretzky and lemieux are nasty, the greatest single players, but its not about having allstars on ur team which is what this team was about they had everything to loose, and everything to gain, so they had to win, and that russian team had been playing wit each other for years they knew there plays and each others playing styles like a well geared machine and the soviets were also all juiced up on roids which made them stronger and faster
Shut your pie hole, pop in your favorite Celine Dion compilation, and adjust the rabbit ears on your set to optimize the reception of tonight's curling extravaganza. While you're at it, apologize on Canada's behalf for producing Bryan Adams.
Truth be known, the USA has never really cared about the opinions spewed by Canadians, regardless of the topic. Your passion for hockey is so deep because it's really the only contribution Canada has made to the world.

Oh yeah.. well russia had it's great moment in BASKETBALL against the U.S :) Remember that? owned.. that's right. Russia kicks America's ass in hockey.. stfu all u ignorant american's who think they are better than russia.. Look at the hall of fame and we'll see :)
because they were all standup style goalies, not to mention all a lot more aggresive then they are today, so they got out of position hella easily. so what does all this crap that i just said mean? fancy way of saying "goalies back then kinda sucked, they just play weird, like fish out of water. "
that just shows how AMAZING america is! the usa team was made up of college kids that had never played w/ each other b4 & they kicked the ussr (who were pro btw)ass!
THAT'S NOT THE POINT!!! IT'S ONE OF THE GREATEST UPSETS IN SPORTS HISTORY!!! besides do you really think that a bunch of college all american's can beat hockey royalty twice?
im not trying to pick a fight...really....this isn't a sarcastic, cynical question: How did Canada get involved in this? This is USA vs. USSR not Canada. It is an awesome video by the way!! Do I believe in Miracles? YES!!
Most NY fans will say this years Sb was the biggest upset it was not but any way the USA team was like all college kids when USSR was like all frigen pro guys so that is the biggest upset ever
I remember I was halfsleeping during this match. It was in the middle of the night i Sweden. I woke up 3-4 times by a distrubing sound and I realized the USA have scored. I particlary remember that i woke up and asked my half-halfsleeping friend and said -"What?", and he said -"USA just scored". Uhu, I said, YES!!! and the i fall back in sleep. We didnt like the USSR. Sweden met USA in the first match. I beliewe it was a draw 3-3, correct me if im wrong.
jovars det kan man tycka att han behöver...för övrigt, du som orkar klaga är säkerligen ett übergeni och det är skönt för då slipper jag skriva till dig på engelska.
are u serious- do some research- an amateur US team, that got destroyed by either the czech or finish B team a few years earlier and I believe tied a weak Norway before the Games, defeated an internationally dominant team for over 20 years that beat them 10-3 a few days before the games.
amateur hockey that was picked by the one the only herb brooks god rest his soul ocallahan and Mccallahan rivals on the same team beating the ussr team that have been playing with each other for years and having the greatest goalie on there team and we had jim craig whos game got off track when his mom died he had a father with no job USSR
When the United States hockey took down the mighty Soviet Union, it really was a time where everyone in the country was one; filled with pride in their country. Such moments rarely occur.
The 1980 Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid was the greatest moment in USA Hockey.
The 1980 team defeated or drew tough competition in 1980: tied with Sweden, beat Czechslovakia 7-3, defeated the Soviets in the semifinals, and defeated a Finland team, who shocked Canada in the Round Robin rounds, for the Gold Medal.
chill when I remeber it. Jim McKay didn't tell the out-come before the game was aired. But he had that look in his eyes. People who didn't know a hockey puck from an icing call became hockey fans that weekend. I try to explain it to kids today they just don't get it. Without a dout the greatest upset in team sports history. Thank you 1980 US Hockey team.
This happened on a friday afternoon. The game was played live on the radio at 5 p.m. ABC taped it for the 8 p.m. TV slot. They tryed to get the game moved to that time slot but the Russian wouldn't let them. I heard it on the radio I still get a
This event transcended sports and is one of the greatest moments in all of US history-- thanks to coach Herb Brooks and his boys from Minnesota and Boston. Or maybe you just had to be 17 years old watching it all on TV whilst American hostages were in Iran and the USA was losing the Cold War (before God sent in # 40, Reagan, as captain of team USA).
who cares at would have happened, or wat could have happened if so and so happened...it happened like it happened..a miracle, im sick of other countries *expecially canada* for trying to ruin our moment, for once the u.s. was the under dog...and won
i remember they where better in 72 and 74 im a canadian, if they had the team that played canada in 1972 or 1974 and the help with kompella ussr would of won
I agree with mdog94! You are just being critical cause you have no emotional attachment to USA, and you are just being critical cause your Canadian asses were knocked out of medal contention. Get a freaking grip jackass!
I was stationed in West Berlin and I was pulling guard duty when we heard... Later I was told of a report that a Soviet spy ship was following a U.S. destroyer and the U.S. captain orderd the following message sent to the spy ship.... US 4 - USSR 3... over and over. The game was broadcast live or we had updates over the armed forces radio.
I was a senior in college. Everyone in my frat house stayed away from hearing the score earlier that night. We put a keg on tap and turned on the taped game later. That game was the best ever. It even brought tears to the eyes of a bunch of drunk frat bros.
The differenc between then and now is that there was no such thing as the internet to spoil it for everybody! That's not even to mention 24/7 sports networks who have the score always posted on either the bottom left or bottom right hand corners of the screen.
I'm trying to find the post game with I believe Jim Mckay. He breaks down in tears trying to put in words the game. Anyone know where I can find it? Thanks
every single time i watch this movie i get chills when my dad went to go see this in the theatre he couldnt stop talking about hes a huge hockey fan and was 11 at the time
28 years ago tomorrow I watched this on tape on ABC. Even knowing the ultimate result did not affect the way I felt. Thanks to ALL of the US Hockey Team of 1980 your play truly inspired a nation! RIP Coach Brooks we will always remember you!
Gotta be one of if not the single greatest moments in sports history.Good job on song choice and clip selection b¨t I think the music was a little loud. I though it would be cool to hera what the announcers were saying, but that's just me.
Man I remember watching this in '80 when I was 17 best sporting event I ever saw. That's ancient history amaueters playing for the love of sport and country, not to mention all that was going on that was a down time for America then high inflation, gas crisis, no money for a lot of people, crime (in NYC at least), Afganhistan, Iran. But just amaeuters putting it all on the line is what's missing these days.
Of course, by the time we watched it we already knew who won. ABC did not show this game live on TV. Biggest screw up in television programming history.
The really only two players that actually were stars NHL was Neal Broten and Ken Morrow. Morrow was lucky enough to after winning the Gold he helped the Islanders win 4 STRAIGHT Stanley Cups from 1980-1983. Then Neal Broten played 14 years with the Minnesota/Dallas Stars and then won a Stanley Cup with the Devils in 1995.
I remember watching this gmae when I was 7 in my room at Midnight. When the clock hit 0 I was up and shouting, woke up half the neighborhood, the half that wasn't watching of course : )
I watched many of their games at the Met Center in Minnesota which they used as their home base leading up to the olympics. Many of the players were well known in Minnesota prior to the games. It was an amazing feat.
I wasn't quite born yet when this was played. I think it's cool that the whole USA cared about hockey for one day, even if it was just to beat the Russians in something. Really I think we still had to beat Norway or Finland for the gold medal and nobody cares about that.
MN represent. Long live the sport of hockey!

Hasek = fish out of water.
Goalies back then are something different!
sinistril 3 years ago
because they were all standup style goalies, not to mention all a lot more aggresive then they are today, so they got out of position hella easily. so what does all this crap that i just said mean? fancy way of saying "goalies back then kinda sucked, they just play weird, like fish out of water. "

im not trying to pick a fight...really....this isn't a sarcastic, cynical question: How did Canada get involved in this? This is USA vs. USSR not Canada. It is an awesome video by the way!! Do I believe in Miracles? YES!!

I'm Canadian and I agree with you 100%!The simple fact is that the USA were better than Canada that Olympics when it mattered the most!

I beliewe it was a draw 3-3, correct me if im wrong.

are u serious- do some research- an amateur US team, that got destroyed by either the czech or finish B team a few years earlier and I believe tied a weak Norway before the Games, defeated an internationally dominant team for over 20 years that beat them 10-3 a few days before the games.

Miracle On Ice
This event transcended sports and is one of the greatest moments in all of US history-- thanks to coach Herb Brooks and his boys from Minnesota and Boston. Or maybe you just had to be 17 years old watching it all on TV whilst American hostages were in Iran and the USA was losing the Cold War (before God sent in # 40, Reagan, as captain of team USA).

who cares at would have happened, or wat could have happened if so and so happened...it happened like it happened..a miracle, im sick of other countries *expecially canada* for trying to ruin our moment, for once the u.s. was the under dog...and won

Gotta be one of if not the single greatest moments in sports history.Good job on song choice and clip selection b¨t I think the music was a little loud. I though it would be cool to hera what the announcers were saying, but that's just me.
JetFireblade 4 years ago 3
Man I remember watching this in '80 when I was 17 best sporting event I ever saw. That's ancient history amaueters playing for the love of sport and country, not to mention all that was going on that was a down time for America then high inflation, gas crisis, no money for a lot of people, crime (in NYC at least), Afganhistan, Iran. But just amaeuters putting it all on the line is what's missing these days.
hindlegs 4 years ago
Of course, by the time we watched it we already knew who won. ABC did not show this game live on TV. Biggest screw up in television programming history.
Whiteshark8 3 years ago
The really only two players that actually were stars NHL was Neal Broten and Ken Morrow. Morrow was lucky enough to after winning the Gold he helped the Islanders win 4 STRAIGHT Stanley Cups from 1980-1983. Then Neal Broten played 14 years with the Minnesota/Dallas Stars and then won a Stanley Cup with the Devils in 1995.

I wasn't quite born yet when this was played. I think it's cool that the whole USA cared about hockey for one day, even if it was just to beat the Russians in something. Really I think we still had to beat Norway or Finland for the gold medal and nobody cares about that.
