@nyc4044 Have you ever met a Bulgarian in person? Some of the most beautiful, friendly people in the world. Sure, I'm biased because my fiancée is Bulgarian, but I've been to several Bulgarian parties and events, and these are some of the coolest people I've ever met. Surprisingly, most speak English as well, with varying degrees of fluency. Far better than my Bulgarian, to say the least.
Chill out y'all, I actually like the flavor. But not this pathetic rendition of "Oh Susanna". I'll tell you what I like. The ‘Polegnala e pschenitza’ by Stephan Kanev and Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares version in the 2010 briitish comedy "Skeletons" soundtrack... which I can't seem to find anywhere. @sleeper7271, crush my nuts in vice and maybe I could sing in Bulgarian. ;)
Good grief...out of all the lovely songs in the world, the choir director chose THAT!? Good grief....I feel shocked and disappointed. Although they did a fantastic job, but what a horrible song... They are excellent singers. But choir director must choose better material.
It is very nice that they did this for the Americans, but their Bulgarian stuff is SO much better. And I'm American. Our music doesn't really work with their harmonies, although this is interesting.
A swan trying to stand on one leg in the water, just to impress a stork? That's what I get when I see these women sing " Oh Susana ".
Kitsch is not the bridge between nations. So let the swan be a swan and a stork, a stork; that's how they, by admiring their unique beauty, can get closer.
Sad, that is the thing that comes into my mind. It's like a native american, with typical clothing and all, singing and twisting up like that man Michael Jackson.
What you're saying does hold some truth. I really can't understand what they were intending to do by going over there and singing an old American country song... There are so many good Bulgarian songs, much more suited for a choir... Perhaps somebody decided this would be more appreciated by the audience of the show... which it was, but they could have got a couple of rednecks to sing it to the same effect...
uhm... This is kind of sad considering how amazing Bulgarian overtone/throat singing is. Actually, that's what I was searching for when I stumbled upon this video. But, to each his own, I suppose.

WTF?! This is a perversion of a classical piece of American songwriting. Stephen Foster is rolling in his grave! What a horrible song choice for this group.
I don't think so they're trying to sing with southern accents, they're just trying to sing in English so we can understand them. They have Bulgarian accents, obviously. But they're singing something familiar to American audiences as a tribute. It's respectful and sincere, and takes guts.
Well, now, how do you know that? I am Bulgarian and I can tell you that if I have to do this, I would know what I am singing and where Alabama is. And it has been proven that I know the location of more states than some Americans, so don't just every national by American standards.
well put gstgg, my name IS stephen Foster, and I was telling a Russian friend about Stephen Foster the song writer, I told her that I'd bet they even sing Stephen Foster songs in Russia, well I don't know about in Russia, but I am proud they sing it in Bulgaria
That's the California gold rush edition. We learned that one in school too back in 4th grade when we learned all about the gold rush. Most versions are more similar to the one here.
lmfao....my name is susanna i had to hear this crap my whole life ...lol they sound like my mother when they say susanna....creepy and verry fuunnnyy...lol
These cant possibly be the same group of women who sang for the Xena television show. Because the opening theme song and soundtrack is incredible...and this is, well, not. lol
LOVE these women! If you want to pick up a GREAT Bulgar CHoir album, check out "RITUAL" - each track is awsome! I have no idea what they are singing, but the CD is worth it.
They are sooooo amazingly awesome, they're really good with their tuning, and the way they use their voices is so awesome, it still has the bulgarian sound and harmony!!!!

Oh Susanna!
oh don't you cry for me,
I'm going to California with
my washbowl on my knee.

I think its a folk song which means lyrics change from location to location and from person to person but the tune stays the same.
