Stastistics in Sweden show that women 20-50 is the most accident prone group of cyclist. They also are most likely to disregard traffic regulation. Going the wrong way, cycling on sidewalks, not using lamps when dark etc. Messengers and commuters may look as if they are taking risks, but the risks are calculated and most of the time under control. The typical female cyclist cruises ahead in her own little universe and ends up in front of a car or on the inside of a lorry turning right.
@mcake1234 Actually given my initial explanation of differentiation, I find that your disdain for specific taxes instead of all taxes to make perfect sense.
I think most people who are not used to riding on the road feel it's safer to ride against traffic, but it's not. Drivers are not expecting you and it's only a matter of time before a parked car pulls out in front of you or a driver who knows the one way streets meets you when he turns that corner to name a few.
It looks like I've lost me the high regard of @musical2, who fails to find the irony behind the "hate," but brings up an interesting argument: Does my calling BS on bad bicycling habits risk damaging whatever good reputation I'm alleged to have in the bike community? Or is it the better way to go to shut up and tolerate those whose irresponsible actions negatively impact both their safety and my favorite activity? For me, the shame is in the latter.
Until a few years ago, I had never seen this in the UK. I have encountered these types a several times in recent years. I don't understand why they do it. It's very dangerous and stupid.
@derrickb1974 I've never seen a wrong-way cyclist cited, but they absolutely can be since they're in violation of California Vehicle Code section 21650, which states: "A bicycle operated on a roadway, or the shoulder of a highway, shall be operated in the same direction, as vehicles are required to be driven upon the roadway." It's pretty amazing despite the law and common sense how many people believe that riding the wrong way is the right way.
I see plenty of this as well, mostly from fixed gear riders. I once saw a trio of fixes riding IN the road against traffic, they were in the far end of the lane but still a stupid move. Not to mention not a single on was wearing a helmet and one of them even had his earphones on listening to his Ipod. Bunch of retards.
i see so many sidewalk riders on the east side in la here, sorta makes me nervous. haven't run into (haha) any wrong way bikers yet but bleh it's sorta tough at times here
@bartlebeey Indeed. Sidewalk riding is an epidemic be it on the east, north, west or south sides of the city. While it's legal to do so in Los Angeles, sidewalk riding actually puts cyclists at greater risk of collisions since cars coming in and out of driveways and around corners often don't see them. But trying to get them into the street would be a lot like getting @eightbit3055 to ride with traffic: it'll probably never happen.
When riding a bicycle you are suppose to ride against traffic. This is so then you can see the on coming cars rather then trusting your life to idiots like you who don't ride in their lane. You are in the wrong.
@eightbit3055 @eightbit3055 Who's the idiot? Your ignorance to the rules of the road is another reminder of the frightening number of people out there who really do believe cyclists are obligated to ride against the flow of vehicular traffic, regardless of what the law says, which is:
California Vehicle Code, Section 21650: A bicycle operated on a roadway, or the shoulder of a highway, shall be operated in the same direction, as vehicles are required to be driven upon the roadway.
@wildbell I know nothing about California but in the Illinois rule book for safe bicycle operation a bicyclist should always ride against traffic. Either way law or not it's always safer to ride against traffic so you can see the on coming cars that are about to hit you like how you were about to hit those bicyclist's. People like you should go to jail for endangering those people. You know, maybe if you get your fat butt on a bike every now and then you would understand.
@eightbit3055 LOL! I get it now: you're too trollishly enraged to realize I AM ON A BIKE in this video! To be fair, you aren't the first not be able to figure that out, but you are the first to persist in the ludicrously lame misconception that it is safer to ride against traffic. While you can be excused for not knowing the law in California, there's really no excuse for making a fool of yourself demonstrating your complete ignorance of the law in your own state.: WHICH IS THE EXACTLY THE SAME.
@wildbell no I'm not trolling I just get real pissed off when people say it's safe to ride with traffic. I ride my bike everyday and the only two times I have ever been hit by a car is when I was riding with traffic. When I talk to the drivers they always tell me that they didn't see me. When riding against traffic if a car is to far into the ditch I can always see them and avoid getting hit. Also I don't go on bicycle paths like that. So this seems like I'm arguing about something else.
@eightbit3055 Whatever you say. But you came here calling me an "idiot" and a "fat ass" and you TOTALLY and belligerently miss the FACT that I'm on a bike. But no, you're not trolling. You're just "pissed off." Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree about that bad behavior as well as what constitutes legal and safe street riding. Tell you what: you bike your way and I'll bike mine. Be safe however you roll.
@eightbit3055 The reason you are supposed to ride WITH traffic is that if you get hit by a car, the collision force will be smaller. For example, if you are riding 20 mph and get hit from behind by a car going 30 mph, the collision speed will be 10 mph. If you ride against traffic, the collision speed would be 50 mph.
@eightbit3055 it appears otherwise - according to the "illinois bicycle rules of the road" (can't post url, google if you want), "Bicyclists must ride in the same direction as other traffic. Riding in the opposite direction of traffic is both dangerous and against the law." in general these days people are taught to ride in the manner of a vehicle and to behave similarly to other traffic instead of relying on traffic getting out of the way.
@eightbit3055 Ride against traffic? You're delusional mate. You need to go get some cycling lessons with the League of American Bicyclists. Learn to cycle vehicularly.
That street looks like the area where I used to ride a lot on in our Freemont (Seattle) neighborhood, like seriously IDENTICAL to one of my many 15 mile workout rides. Unfortunately my bike got completely totaled last week after I got hit by a car. But I have encountered wrong way cyclists before and they are annoying.
If you are riding with the direction of traffic and there is no bike lane, a car coming up behind you has a chance to slow down and choose a good time to pass you. If you are coming at him though, the pass has to happen when you meet whether there is room for it or not!
For any cyclists who routinely ride against traffic... think on this one.
If you are a pedestrian you are supposed to be facing oncoming traffic because it gives you a chance to hop up onto the curb if a driver doesn't see you. You can't do that with a bike bikes don't jump sideways very well.
@MyNameIsDuffmarn Apologies if you find my statement against "expecting" bad drivers offensive, but in LA it's a bit like the equivalent of going outside on a stormy day and expecting rain. Certainly 99% of the motoring public I share the road with does nothing to endanger me, but unfortunately on a regular basis that 1% can almost always be encountered.
so really, instead of lamenting these ignorant ladies, why not just let it go? i guarantee it took more effort to get home and upload this video than it would have taken to just forget that it ever happened.
@pancakebot Ha. In fact, responding to your extensive commentary probably took more time than it took me to post this clip from more than 3 years ago. But I hear where you're coming from and while you see this vid as a waste of time, I see it as an opportunity to share the importance for ALL cyclists to behave responsibly, regardless of whether they're out for a casual ride or a double century. I appreciate you taking the time to share your point of view.
ah yes, but you see i have absolutely nothing to do, so i spent my time trying to share my thoughts.
im not saying that you shouldnt be critical of these people, but i feel like your reaction to these two women might be slightly blown out of proportion.
also, the argument about motorists driving on the wrong side of the road doesnt hold up because you need a license and extensive training to drive a car. however anybody could get on a bike and ride it down the street.
@pancakebot I guess my motorist example helped you ignore my ultimate point: that cyclists -- whatever category you want to put them in -- must ride the streets responsibly. If that's an over-reaction to you in this specific old incident, it comes from me (somewhat idealistically) wanting cyclists to behave appropriately so that there are less excuses put forth by those ignorant mostly motoring legions who insist we don't have a legal right to the streets. Ride safe!
lastly, these people are obviously not avid cyclists, theyre probably just 2 people trying to go for a morning bike ride because its nice. i doubt they feel comfortable riding in the road, but riding on the sidewalk is illegal in most places and they most likely dont want to take up the sidewalk because there are more people walking dogs and such than there are cyclists.
@pancakebot That argument's been made before about them not being avid cyclists. It's always interesting to me how some people are able to excuse and accept bad cycling behavior/habits because of some sort of subjective proficiency. Would it be OK for someone who's not an avid motorist to drive on the wrong side of the street? As to it being illegal to ride bikes on sidewalks it's entirely legal to do so in the city of Los Angeles, though I don't encourage it because of its dangers.
hey i dont mean to pick a fight here, ive been a bicycle courier for about 4 years and definitely appreciate a good shit talking when it comes to dumb cyclists, but there are a few things that i should note about this video. first of all, the video is a little shaky, so i could be mistaken, but there doesnt appear to be a bike lane on the other side of the street. also, the bike lane that youre riding in doesnt have any clearly marked signs of which direction it is supposed to be traveled upon.
@pancakebot I appreciate a good discussion! Thanks for the respectful inquiry. To answer your questions: Yes, there is a striped bike lane on the opposite side of the street; 2) I've never seen an on-street bike lane that is directionally marked, especially since by law (CVC Section 1650.1) cyclists are supposed to roll with the flow of traffic.
@wildbell@wildbell A chickenshit commenter who talks shit to girls, only? lol I have more than one channel so blocking me doesn't really work and even if you block someone they can still send messages to your inbox. Nice try. Kindof a pussy move though, isn't it?
@thestarrover79 What, no credit for not simply deleting your first comment (or this one -- and any subsequent multi-account bullshit you want to throw my way)? Let me know from your third account if you're in Los Angeles and when you want to meet so you can get a more well-rounded impression of the kind of pussy I am, rather than just basing it on a vidclip from three years and more than 15,000 of street miles ridden facing down and standing up to all manner of idiot.
@PlebScrubber is not alone in believing that it's OK for bikes to ride against traffic, but the California Vehicle Code strictly prohibits the unsafe practice:
CVC Section 1650.1: A bicycle operated on a roadway, or the shoulder of a highway, shall be operated in the same direction, as vehicles are required to be driven upon the roadway.
As a driver, pedestrian, and longboarder, there's almost nothing on the road (other than shitty drivers) who I hate more than cyclists who go the wrong way. As a driver, they come out of nowhere and I sometimes hardly have time to move over, as a pedestrian they come out of nowhere when I cross, and I have the same problem that you have when I'm longboarding.
One thing I have noticed with college students is that one side of their hemisphere of their common sense side of the brain is "inactive" and the other memory retention for learning is in full swing. It is rare that I have encuntered a college student who applies common sense in anything period. The riding is something all across the country and there are no patrols or cops who enforce these idiots about riding on the right side of the road. I have had confrontations with these buffoons!!
Obviously, the best option would be for them to ride on the other side of the road.
Keep in mind, however, the worst option is when they're going your way while riding abreast across the whole lane/path. At least here (in this vid) they can see you coming and give you some room to pass.
me personally i would think riding against traffic would b smarter.. then u can see if a car is not paying attention n about to hit u.. where if the driver coming behind wasnt paying attention u have no way of trying to avoid it
I am from Amsterdam and we have so many of these dicks riding around... Especially if you're going at speed and the path is narrow it gets extra annoying!
yeah that happens alot where i live, its bothers me so much especially on the main streets where i live, and majority of the time they dont budge so you are the one always having to clear the way for them
I know where this is. This is in L.A. by USC on 30th st and McClintock and yes bikers there are horible I have witnessed 3 accidents. People drive all over the road n this area and always on there phone and bother to even look both ways before they cross the road.
@sanjurokurosawa Forgive my confusion, but when you say "the driver" if you're referring to the person filming (which was me) then I'm thinking you aren't realizing I myself am on a bike.
I don't get why they do that. they know what the rules of the road are, why the hell do they think that going the wrong way in a lane like that is a good idea? they deserve to get hit by the oncoming car if they can't or don't want to ride responsibly.. I've even told one so when he was coming at me on his bike while I was on mine. either ride right or get the hell of the road. it's that kind of shit that makes all cyclists look like douchbags
I'm familiar with that opinion, @geekboyII . I myself have commuted 6,000 miles a year by bike these last two years, but I'm sure there are those who would consider me a "bike rider" too. Members of the cycling community will always reflexively and defensively distance themselves from those they view as different or lesser, but I'm not sure what such a class-based stance accomplishes. In the end whether you're Lance or these two ladies, we all have a responsibility to ride responsibly.
Fresh behind JohnSmiths8379858's ignorance to the rules of the rode rides @dirtbikekidjoe, another reminder of the frightening number of people out there who really do believe cyclists are obligated to ride against the flow of vehicular traffic, regardless of what the law says, which is:
California Vehicle Code, Section 1650.1: A bicycle operated on a roadway, or the shoulder of a highway, shall be operated in the same direction, as vehicles are required to be driven upon the roadway.
His arrogance aside, JohnSmiths8379858's comment is an important reminder that there is a frightening number of people out there who really do believe cyclists are obligated to ride against the flow of vehicular traffic. Allow me to help him "get it straight":
California Vehicle Code, Section 1650.1: A bicycle operated on a roadway, or the shoulder of a highway, shall be operated in the same direction, as vehicles are required to be driven upon the roadway.
Get a lot of this in Cambridge, mainly foreign students who probably don't even know it is supposed to be one-way. It is easier to ride into them and point it out :)
Thanks for that tfortip, @rforracing. But just the same I enjoy the thousands of miles a year I've safely logged on my bike's odometer instead of my truck's.
Excellent revelation, @judaspriestfan16! Spoken like someone all too familiar with the predicament you baselessly and meaninglessly presume me to suffer from.
I wholeheartedly agree with you @judaspriestfan16 that there are far better things to do than making videos such as this. One of those far better things is to meaninglessly snap judge and comment on such meaningless videos. It's almost quaint that you wrongly think I'm monitoring comments. Clearly you don't grasp the simple process wherein when someone leaves such insults, I'm notified by email. It's a bit of a variation on the old game of Ding Dong Bitch: You ring the bell, I answer it. ;)
When that happens to me I like to pretend I'm going to give them a stiff arm, plus I say something like what you said. I think they get the message. Bike paths should be made with an occasional grid of angled spikes and educational signs right next to them. That way cyclists going in the correct direction don't get a flat tire and those that do get flats and learn their lesson.
You're on the money @Atsuke. These are USC undergrads. With al the bad biking that goes on around there I like to call it the University of Stupid Cyclists.
Move to Amsterdam then! They have bike traffic rules there, you'd love it, well, until you reach a bike stop light, lol!!! Almost hit a biker who blew through a stop sign... these signs are for you too bikers!!!
@mmaaxx1198 between your demand that I "move to Amsterdam" on this comment and again repeated in a comment to my post about a Fedex truck, I'm going to respectfully recommend you retire that recommendation.
I hate them for similar reasons.... they disregard the rules of the road. Run reds, cycle on the pavements nearly hitting pedestrians, make hazards of themselves with little regard for other road users and generally think rules dont apply to em.
Ok thats not ALL cyclists but the ones who do behave properly are the rare examples as opposed to the bad being the rare
@leedsm18. I think what you say can apply to just about any group of road user. FWIW, I may not always succeed, but I try to be one of those rare examples whether I'm biking, driving, or walking.
I say let natural selection take its course. These idiots give cyclists who follow the rules of the road a bad name. If a few of them get picked off by cars now and then, it's really hard for me to feel sympathy for them.
@wildbell typically its true though some of my friends are cyclists and when they're riding or talking about riding they tend to be dicks the rest of the time they're pretty cool
Fairenough, @tannersk869. Being on a bike can bring out the bad behavior in some people, but I don't agree that it's typical and certainly I don't agree that it's as all-encompassing as @whyusucksobad insists it is. There's always going to be a percentage of otherwise cool people who are inconsiderate out there on the roads, whether they're walking, pedaling, or driving.
@tannersk869 very cool. As a mountain biker I find that comes with a built-in bias against the activity from a good percentage of hikers and equestrians some of whom have experienced negative encounters with inconsiderate riders and allowed that to influence how they feel about mountain bikers as a group. On the trail I always endeavor to be on my best behavior to counter that misperception and I applaud you for doing the same.
LOL @hamsterman81... way to be a gentleman? Maybe with such an eye for etiquette your screenname should be hamstermanners. As to your ungentlemanly comment expressing such incredulity over something you deem so trivial , all I can say is: likewise.
I hate wrong-way cyclists too, but you say you hate cyclists in general. That means you hate me, and I've never cycled the wrong way in my life. Nor do I run red lights or even overtake when cars are stopped at stop lights. I obey all the rules of the road, so what is it about cyclists like me that makes you hate?
@BeeryUSA That would be a very valid question if I indeed expressed that I "hate cyclists in general." But if that's true than as a cyclist I hate myself as well. Though not as fundamentally conscientious a cyclist as you I ride with respect for the rules and consideration for those I share the road with and would invite you to point out specifically where I express what you interpreted to be such a disgust for all cyclists and not just those who ignore the laws and are inconsiderate of others.
@BeeryUSA Ahhhh, I think I understand now. You're refering to the statement "this is why I hate cyclists" that I make in the actual video. Forgive me, I thought you were referring to something I wrote here in the comments. Now that I've figured it out, all I can offer is taht pparently you're taking my attempt at irony with me saying I "hate" cyclists while I'm in the midst of cycling far too much at face value.
I'm familiar with that opinion, @TTDMFfreaknew.
@wildbell The question remains; why do these two have the RIGHT to try for a licence when they can't even exercise fundamental rules of the road. I will admit to one thing; my Sister is HORRIBLE.
Upon one case where she was leading, she U-turned on a green in front of a vehicle that read her well. I chatted with the driver after making the comment- and she has her drivers licence!
@pcfxer Totally valid question. Oftentimes I think the careless and/or blatantly aggressive ways a person rides a bike in traffic can translate to how they might also perform behind the wheel of a car. Hopefully with your good guidance your sister is riding and driving safer and more conscientiously.
Those weren't "Cyclists!" They were a couple of bike riders, people who don't know the cycling laws and who make us "Cyclist" look bad. Then again, as a firefighter, I call them "Job security."
I assume that wildbell is a cyclist as well and just misspoke when he said "That's why I hate cyclists."
I appreciate the input @coyoteself. Some members of the cycling community almost always seem ready to segregate people who ride bicycles by hyper-defining the word "cyclist." That's not to say there aren't specific divisions... for example, I bike commute 6,000 miles a year but I'm obviously no Lance Armstrong. But whether I am or the wrong-way riders are "bike riders" or "cyclists" is mainly a semantic argument. So no misspeaking here: I see anyone in the saddle as a cyclist.
@wildbell even tho you may be correct that anyone in the saddle is a cyclist. You seemed to miss my point entirely. I know a few cyclists who are on the other side of the argument and say that they don't "Ride" a bike, they "Drive" a bike. We can get into a semantic debate between as to what a bike rider is & what cyclist is. But it wouldn't prove anything one way or the other and is ultimately a waste of time. Either way those two wrong way idiots, give us all a bad name
@7instantcoffee7 Very well put! Though I stand guilty of using the heavily loaded "hate" in the title I would respectfully submit that you try not to take it at face value or attempt to recognize (at least in this case) its implied irony given that I myself am on a bike.
What a shitbag. He's riding a bicycle but says he hates cyclists (in general)?
I hate when dipshits ride the wrong-way and think they deserve to be ticketed/arrested for wrong way driving. But I love cycling and ride 5 days a week.
@stopglobalswarming Re-read the title you idiot: I "hate" WRONG WAY CYCLISTS not cyclists in general as you so asshatedly misinterpret. Then while you're at it, reread your comment in which you left out a crucial word in your reason why you hate them as well. Then get on your bike and fuck off.
@wildbell : The user is probably responding to your declaration, "Thats why I hate cyclists." just a guess. Also, they agreed with you about what seems to be your point (that those wrong-wayers shouldn't be riding like that), but you still call him "idiot" -- I think you're approach to life is a little defensive & excessively angry. Lighten up a little + be rational, calm, respectful of yourself + others. Put the energy toward educating others (in a mature, effective way, i.e. not grumbling
@7instantcoffee7 Thanks for the considerate comment and excellent advice, but I would return the favor by suggesting you not judge me by a two year old post and my various reactions to the trolls who've stopped by. Or not, and just narrowly think that this comment thread is how I operate in real life. Oh and feel free to parse and defend @stopglobalwarming all you want, but whether he/she "agreed" with me I'm seeing that you missed the part where the jerk opened by calling me a "shitbag?"
They are what BikeSnob calls bike salmon. I have to deal with these idiots too. The common myth is that they can see oncoming traffic, so they must be safer. This is just a myth because its the speed differential that will shorten reaction time and kill them. 40mph car +15mph bike = dead. Solution? Get a mirror.
Stastistics in Sweden show that women 20-50 is the most accident prone group of cyclist. They also are most likely to disregard traffic regulation. When riding against traffic if a car is to far into the ditch I can always see them and avoid getting hit. Also I don't go on bicycle paths like that. So this seems like I'm arguing about something else.
eightbit3055 4 months ago
@eightbit3055 Whatever you say. But you came here calling me an "idiot" and a "fat ass" and you TOTALLY and belligerently miss the FACT that I'm on a bike. But no, you're not trolling. You're just "pissed off." Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree about that bad behavior as well as what constitutes legal and safe street riding. Tell you what: you bike your way and I'll bike mine. Be safe however you roll.
wildbell 4 months ago
@eightbit3055 The reason you are supposed to ride WITH traffic is that if you get hit by a car, the collision force will be smaller. For example, if you are riding 20 mph and get hit from behind by a car going 30 mph, the collision speed will be 10 mph. If you ride against traffic, the collision speed would be 50 mph.
tiehut 4 months ago
@eightbit3055 it appears otherwise - according to the "illinois bicycle rules of the road" (can't post url, google if you want), "Bicyclists must ride in the same direction as other traffic. Riding in the opposite direction of traffic is both dangerous and against the law." in general these days people are taught to ride in the manner of a vehicle and to behave similarly to other traffic instead of relying on traffic getting out of the way.
bartlebeey 4 months ago
@eightbit3055 Ride against traffic? You're delusional mate. You need to go get some cycling lessons with the League of American Bicyclists. Learn to cycle vehicularly.

If you are riding with the direction of traffic and there is no bike lane, a car coming up behind you has a chance to slow down and choose a good time to pass you. If you are coming at him though, the pass has to happen when you meet whether there is room for it or not!
RodMacPherson 5 months ago
For any cyclists who routinely ride against traffic... think on this one.
If you are a pedestrian you are supposed to be facing oncoming traffic because it gives you a chance to hop up onto the curb if a driver doesn't see you. You can't do that with a bike bikes don't jump sideways very well.
RodMacPherson 5 months ago
"So when I recorded a recent morning commute I was expecting to encounter bad drivers" THIS is why we hate cyclists
MyNameIsDuffmarn 5 months ago
@MyNameIsDuffmarn Apologies if you find my statement against "expecting" bad drivers offensive, but in LA it's a bit like the equivalent of going outside on a stormy day and expecting rain. Certainly 99% of the motoring public I share the road with does nothing to endanger me, but unfortunately on a regular basis that 1% can almost always be encountered.

so really, instead of lamenting these ignorant ladies, why not just let it go? i guarantee it took more effort to get home and upload this video than it would have taken to just forget that it ever happened.
pancakebot 7 months ago
@pancakebot Ha. In fact, responding to your extensive commentary probably took more time than it took me to post this clip from more than 3 years ago. But I hear where you're coming from and while you see this vid as a waste of time, I see it as an opportunity to share the importance for ALL cyclists to behave responsibly, regardless of whether they're out for a casual ride or a double century. I appreciate you taking the time to share your point of view.
wildbell 7 months ago
@wildbell
ah yes, but you see i have absolutely nothing to do, so i spent my time trying to share my thoughts.
im not saying that you shouldnt be critical of these people, but i feel like your reaction to these two women might be slightly blown out of proportion.
also, the argument about motorists driving on the wrong side of the road doesnt hold up because you need a license and extensive training to drive a car. however anybody could get on a bike and ride it down the street.
pancakebot 7 months ago
@pancakebot I guess my motorist example helped you ignore my ultimate point: that cyclists -- whatever category you want to put them in -- must ride the streets responsibly. If that's an over-reaction to you in this specific old incident, it comes from me (somewhat idealistically) wanting cyclists to behave appropriately so that there are less excuses put forth by those ignorant mostly motoring legions who insist we don't have a legal right to the streets. Ride safe!
wildbell 7 months ago
(part 2... got cut off sorry)
lastly, these people are obviously not avid cyclists, theyre probably just 2 people trying to go for a morning bike ride because its nice. i doubt they feel comfortable riding in the road, but riding on the sidewalk is illegal in most places and they most likely dont want to take up the sidewalk because there are more people walking dogs and such than there are cyclists.
pancakebot 7 months ago
@pancakebot That argument's been made before about them not being avid cyclists. It's always interesting to me how some people are able to excuse and accept bad cycling behavior/habits because of some sort of subjective proficiency. Would it be OK for someone who's not an avid motorist to drive on the wrong side of the street? As to it being illegal to ride bikes on sidewalks it's entirely legal to do so in the city of Los Angeles, though I don't encourage it because of its dangers.
wildbell 7 months ago
hey i dont mean to pick a fight here, ive been a bicycle courier for about 4 years and definitely appreciate a good shit talking when it comes to dumb cyclists, but there are a few things that i should note about this video. first of all, the video is a little shaky, so i could be mistaken, but there doesnt appear to be a bike lane on the other side of the street. also, the bike lane that youre riding in doesnt have any clearly marked signs of which direction it is supposed to be traveled upon.
pancakebot 7 months ago
@pancakebot I appreciate a good discussion! Thanks for the respectful inquiry. To answer your questions: Yes, there is a striped bike lane on the opposite side of the street; 2) I've never seen an on-street bike lane that is directionally marked, especially since by law (CVC Section 1650.1) cyclists are supposed to roll with the flow of traffic.

PlebScrubber 8 months ago
@PlebScrubber is not alone in believing that it's OK for bikes to ride against traffic, but the California Vehicle Code strictly prohibits the unsafe practice:

Obviously, the best option would be for them to ride on the other side of the road.
Keep in mind, however, the worst option is when they're going your way while riding abreast across the whole lane/path. At least here (in this vid) they can see you coming and give you some room to pass.

On the trail I always endeavor to be on my best behavior to counter that misperception and I applaud you for doing the same.

BeeryUSA 1 year ago
@BeeryUSA That would be a very valid question if I indeed expressed that I "hate cyclists in general." But if that's true than as a cyclist I hate myself as well. Though not as fundamentally conscientious a cyclist as you I ride with respect for the rules and consideration for those I share the road with and would invite you to point out specifically where I express what you interpreted to be such a disgust for all cyclists and not just those who ignore the laws and are inconsiderate of others.

Those weren't "Cyclists!" They were a couple of bike riders, people who don't know the cycling laws and who make us "Cyclist" look bad. Then again, as a firefighter, I call them "Job security."
I assume that wildbell is a cyclist as well and just misspoke when he said "That's why I hate cyclists."
coyoteself 1 year ago
I appreciate the input @coyoteself. Some members of the cycling community almost always seem ready to segregate people who ride bicycles by hyper-defining the word "cyclist." That's not to say there aren't specific divisions... for example, I bike commute 6,000 miles a year but I'm obviously no Lance Armstrong. But whether I am or the wrong-way riders are "bike riders" or "cyclists" is mainly a semantic argument. So no misspeaking here: I see anyone in the saddle as a cyclist.
wildbell 1 year ago
@wildbell even tho you may be correct that anyone in the saddle is a cyclist. You seemed to miss my point entirely. I know a few cyclists who are on the other side of the argument and say that they don't "Ride" a bike, they "Drive" a bike. We can get into a semantic debate between as to what a bike rider is & what cyclist is. But it wouldn't prove anything one way or the other and is ultimately a waste of time. Either way those two wrong way idiots, give us all a bad name
