I notice that people use a spray consisting of water and alcohol? What i gathered is that it deflects dust and reduces shine... Is this correct.. Are there any other uses for this spray?
love the videos!! I have been following them and have made a diorama for native americans that has a river carved out in it. I used the foam to created the scene but don't know what 1.) to use for water and 2.) if I can put the water diectly on the foam rivebed?? What would you suggest?
thanks for the time you took to do this...this was very informative and this is the route I'll be taking...never thought of using spray bottles for paint mixed with the "wet water" solution :-)
Thanks for the great series. I have come back to them several times. I have both N and O gauge layouts, but I base them on movable hollow-core doors that I can connect together. My new O has the 3/4 foam base, I have the track laid out (with temporary supports for elevated areas) and I am on the verge of now doing to foam landscaping. I am excited about using your techniques.
Video 9 was the final in the series, right? It seemed to end abruptly. I did find all 9, so no problem there.
Yeah, 9 does end abruptly. I did these videos several years ago on a digital camera and had no idea I'd be posting them here. I didn't really shoot these with "completeness" in mind. On another note, I'm going to replacing this series with (somewhat) higher quality versions. I ran the source videos through a video enhancer and recompiled them at a higher bit rate. They'll look and sound a bit better if you watch them in youtube's High Quality video mode.
Yes, being a subscriber, I actually got notification that you posted the higher quality verstion of part 1. That's what brought me back to the series today. I ran through them again and took a few more notes so I can do some shopping and begin my next phase.
Thanks again, I'll be looking to the higher quality version of the rest.
I addition I found some video that I left out of the series so now there will be 10 Parts to the series. I found the video I shot for doing the acrylic washes on the mountains. A bunch of people have been asking about that and I had though I had forgotten to shoot that part of the process.
Unfortunately Youtube won't let me replace the existing videos and keep all the comments. I have to upload them as brand new.
Ok. I should know this but I'm drawing a blank. What's pva? Are you talking elmers glue? If so I'm thinking elmers glue would leave a shiny residue. The scenic cement dries to a matte finish. You may want to test it out on a small test section to see how it turns out. I spray down the grass lightly with a little "wet water" (water&dish soap) to hold the grass in place. the scenic cement is thicker than the wet water and tends 2 get blown around by it it you don't wet it down a bit first.
Your videos were very helpful but for some reason part 7 didnt work. Can you tell me what was in part 7 and how will the foam stay in place on pliwood? If you put it down will it just stay or is glue or something needed?
Yeah...I'm not sure what's going on with that. I'm thinking there is some kind of problem with youtube because I didn't delete the video nor have I received any notification from youtube that my video was taken down for copyright issues (I can't imagine what it could be). I'll wait a couple of more days to see if the video "shows" up again before re-uploading it.
I really appreciate the effort you put in to making these wonderful tutorial vids. I am building a layout myself and used "the old plaster of paris" method. But I will certainly now be adding some foam rock walls. Thank you again -
Thanks for the series. I was surprised you didn't film the painting of the rocks after the base coat and the spackle, someday if you get a chance it would be great to see how you apply washes to get those nice color variations in the base rock layer.
this is a facinating series,,ive wanted to construct another layout for a long time, and this has inspired me to do so,,thank you verry much for shareing this valueble infomation!!!!!
Arrg! This response is for Kikabom who posted a comment here a little while ago. I deleted it by accident. No I'm not concerned about gunking up the track since I had it covered up with blue painters masking tape. Once I was done I peeled the tape of and cleaned the tracks with Goo Gone to remove any residue.
I found this stuff in the building supplier and worked it out for myself. God, I wish I'd seen this video series first, it would have saved me a lot of heartache! Mine is a slot car track though.
whoa wait !!!! thats it ?....sheeesh i was really enjoying this.i had an awesome layout once...(did my moutians with cardboard strips laid into a webbing pattern and covered with newspaper dipped in watery plasterparis.) this is great.makes wanna see more..thanks for posting
Don't use newspaper, use paper towels. C-Fold paper towels work best. Use the heavy duty paper towel so it doesn't rip. Newspaper tends to stay too straight and the edges stick out. Paper towels take the shape of your mesh. I'm also trying this foam method. I've successfully used plaster of paris. You can get a big bag at Lowes pretty cheap these days.
I also watched the whole series. Great job. I am just getting started on my own N scale layout and will be using foam. Like the others we want more. Perhaps you could show how you built the benchwork as well. Thanks for all the great ideas.
From one model railroader to another, great job. I watched the whole series, and learned alot. I found these at the right time, my project at the club is making rocks from foam. You explained your techniques very well. Thanks!!!
As said befor, you have made a great series of videos. We all would like to see some of your trains running thru you layout. In other words "WE WANT MORE".
That was great! I just got done watching all of your videos, and I have to say that watching that will help me in building my model railroad. Again thanks, you gave me a lot of very good pointers and your modeling turned out great!!!
I just watched your entire series of videos on this! It gave me some great ideas! But I swould have loved to see some trains running thru the finished product! But I would love to see more series form you about other model railroad topics!
I would like to make on of these to showcase my Lego, it doesn't have to be this detailed though, got any tips?

wouldn't that much glue sprayed over the turf make it hard and plastic like instead of looking like real grass as when you first put it down?
724Christian 8 months ago
@724Christian it would look "plastic" if used a glue that dried to a glossy finish. The stuff I'm using dries to a matte finish.

I helped my kids make a diorama that had a beaver pond. The Pond was carved directly into the foam. I used Envirotex resin for the water.

I put down the grass first, misted it a bit, and then sprayed it with scenic cement.

Do you have to tape up the track, or does the scenic cement not alter the look?
NafisC 3 years ago
I like to keep the track taped up. I don;t want grass to get stuck to the track.
