I flew the body of a dear lost friend back to his hometown, burried him, stayed for a month, drank met friends for life, drank some more-All the while this song followed me,i saw her 4 times in my life, and i always cry like a little child when i hear this song..like a knife to the heart <3 volim te Ezma !
Gypsy's live with "no man's land" idea since ever. They never demand a piece of land or a nation. But they loved the "ground" that they lived, genuinely. They make love, with music, where they lived. From India to Spanish and France and From Egypt and Greece to Russia. They do to music, that bees doing to the flowers. This is love and freedom. I am crying...
i am neither a gipsy nor a balkan, i do not even understand the lyrics, but i can't help myself crying for this song. every time i listen to this i feel the pain romans got through. i feel like them, i feel like i am one of them. great song, great voice, thanks for sharing this wonderful song, loves from turkey
This is the Gypsy's anthem!!! "Litlle tribe is traveling the World, like a bee from flower to flower, horses' galoping can be haeard far away, but further more, a song ig echoing "Hej, gypsies - born with a song lived with a song died with a song !" Litlle tribe is traveling the World. like a bee from flower to flower.... Then all the same in Gypsie language....
Only Esma has a voice like this. I am from Macedonia, and whenever I hear this song I think of my Roma friends and the Roma community from Shuto Orizari and Topaana. Thank you Esma!
Little horse buggy roams the world, like a bee from flower to flower, horse gallop is heard far away, and even further the song can be heard. Eeej, Gypsies, born with music, with music lived, with music died. Little horse buggy roams the world, like a bee from flower to flower, I went on a long journey I met beautiful Roma Eeej Roma, Eeej brothers (2x) In the chest of every Gypsy, the eternal fire is burning, nothing can extinguish it. not even the tear rolling down the cheek.
Cerga mala luta preko sveta, kao pcela od cveta do cveta, topot konja daleko se cuje, a jos dalje pesma odjekuje. Eeeeej, cigani, sa pesmom rodjeni, s pesmom ziveli, s pesmom umrli. Cerga mala luta preko sveta, kao pcela od cveta do cveta, Gelem, gelem, lungone dromensa (in Romani) Maladilem shukare Romensa (in Romani) Eeeeej Romale, Eeeeej Chavale (2x) U grudima svakog ciganina, sve dok zivi vatre uvek ima, ne moze je nista da pogasi, cak ni suza koja obraz kvasi. Repeat #2...
Romani has been an unwritten language for centuries, so many expressions cannot be translated word for word to/from English. For those of you who care to know, the melody of this song (that has many variations of its title like ‘Djelem, Djelem’, ‘Dzelem, Dzelem’, ‘Gelem, Gelem’) is traditional Gypsy, but the words are not. I’ve seen several versions - basically the same theme with slight variations. I have 500 characters limit here so will post both Serbian and English words separately...
@caroppio I can only translate from 4:12 .It goes something like: In the chest of every gipsy there is alway a flame(fire is more acurate actually),and nothing can extinguish it not even the tear that rolls down the face(cheek).Gipsys, with song they live, with song they die.
I would translate it completley(I'm sorry for not being able to) unfortunatley I can't find original lyrics anywhere online.:-/
This performance moves me to tears. Even without the pictures and without understanding any of the lyrics, only the voice and the energy of this awesome woman - QUEEN Esma - makes me cry. I was lucky to enjyoy her performance in Frankfurt which I will never forget. This comes from a German Gaji (who's 2 son's best friend is a German Rom).
The liberal bourgeoisie democracies imposed upon the European nations are now killing Roma people in Slovakia, chasing them in France, closing them in concentration camps elsewhere, and all this why? Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite. Where have now gone the principles of the French Revolution, Monsieur Nikolas Sarkozy?
Esma was my neighbor for decades in Belgrade, Serbia. She was well known for her musical performances and for her habit of adopting several Roma kids and taking them from poverty and putting them on right tracks, sending them to school, teaching them how to play music and making good citizens of htem. Thank you Esma for your songs and your good work.
I am all into it and Hear the cry of the people and would like to minister to there deep pain, the Lord jesus, cryed with every Gypsy, I will download this and play it to keep a burden for the people of your country
i wish i had a voice like that,i would sing all the time!she's amazing.she's performing at balkan fever in vienna in may,i'm hoping to see her there!can't wait!and compliments for the video!gypsies are a special type of people, never been in a war, never fighting over a piece of land.respect!
Gypsies. How unfortunate a people! The most unfortunate of Europe. The Jews too, but atleast people have payed plenty of attention to that... but you, still ignored.
I have just been reading Garth Cartwright's "Princes among Men.". I couldn't believe the singers he writes about were as good as he makes them sound... but now I realise that Esma deserves all the superlatives.
Well, I hope youre and everyones dad will be O.K. and thats all that maters. Now I would really got drunk because I got this ball in my heart that somehow it must come out. I think it's sadness...
I really really hope that your dad becomes healthy again and he can again sing this song for you.....
Remeber....this song is about the courage by which the gypsy people live their lives against all the odds...so you need this courage to overcome the grief and pain.

Right said ! I feel so sad when people have sterotypical view of certain people due to their race, religion, colour...There are good and bad people in every society...So we should celebrate the goodness rather than spread hatred...We already have too much hatred in this world so lets make a difference...
I am proud because I am neighbor to Esma and many Gipsys - Romi live in my town Skopje. They make our Macedonian culture richest and music one of the best in the world.
I listened to Esma the first time when I was a little girl and was travelling with my family in Yugoslavia. I remember a very beautiful song that my father told me was about a woman who was in love with a young man that she could not marry because she was a widow. I always wanted to track this song since then but I dont know the name. Can anybody help me thanks.
Croatia? I've heard they have another saying - "they can't pay me so little, as little i can work" - and it's NOT a gypsy saying, mind you, but 'croatian worker in factory who "works his ass off"', as ivan12345678 described it
Well you're lucky to live in a rich country where welfare is 2.5 x an average salary. In my country it's not only gypsies who dig through garbage, it's also many old people, retirees, unemployed... And anyway, i refuse further discussion with someone who hears this song and this voice and then says "gypsies are nothing but welfare abusers" etc. Your words are a monument to your stupidity and insensitiveness, and i leave them to witness about you eternally. Bye.
This is so beautiful! Can anybody please translate it for me? I would be grateful to know what she is saying. Even without knowing, you can hear the emotion in her singing. Amazing!!
i love a macedonian gipsy guy he lives in germany´, i´m not a gipsy but love the culture....i hope he will see me one day and love me too :( what means this song can anyone translate please????
i am not a gypsy but i love the song and by the way the name of the song is GELEM GELEM wich is the international anthem of gypsies and its sang so good by esma. i think she sings it the best way someone can sing this song!
btw... you ppl should be proud of being gypsy and admit u are gypsy i wish i were a gypsy..u have a great culture and u know what... nowadays ppl have changed their mind about gypsyes and even i hate when i see someone stinking either he is a gypsy or a gadjo...it doesnt mather the race as long as u are a great person! asume ur identity and forget about the mean ppl and be proud of being gypsyes
Thanks for your comments. I completely agree with you about the prejudice and stereotypical behaviour against the gypsies. We should judge people as an individual, not because of his colour, race, ethinicity or religion. We are all human beings and share the same earth. Personally, I am very much interested into the the gypsy music, culture and life. I feel that there is a hidden gypsy deep inside me :-)
Thanks for your comments. I got your point. I had absolutely no intention to portray them poor or bad people. I myself like gypsy people and for that reason I have made this video. I have tried to show that they are brave people and they try to live their lives happily no matter hard times they have. I hope you got my point.
Iam amazed by the photography especialy the girl on 2:44 , also the music and Esma the queen with the biggest heart in the world... her voice is unique

btw... you ppl should be proud of being gypsy and admit u are gypsy i wish i were a gypsy..u have a great culture and u know what... nowadays ppl have changed their mind about gypsyes and even i hate when i see someone stinking either he is a gypsy or a gadjo...it doesnt mather the race as long as u are a great person! asume ur identity and forget about the mean ppl and be proud of being gypsyes

I feel that there is a hidden gypsy deep inside me :-)
Peace and Greetings

Hey there
Thanks for your comments. I got your point. I had absolutely no intention to portray them poor or bad people. I myself like gypsy people and for that reason I have made this video. I have tried to show that they are brave people and they try to live their lives happily no matter hard times they have. I hope you got my point.
Greetings

Gypsies: We Jews are your spiritual brothers. We too wandered. We too were victims of European Christian intolerance and demonization and genocide.
Your music is an inspiration. May good fortune smile on you.
