jeff mills is a philosopher, and in a way he's like a priest standing at his altar, when he's dj'ing. instead of religion, he performs not only a music show, but also a philosophy. and he's right. the music he's bringing never is just dancing music. there's always a certain story-line in his tale. thats what adds a feeling to his music, which makes him a great artist. the best techno-dj as far as i'm concerned. one of the few artists i'd like to have a chat with.
because we live in a world where mediocrity and superficiality are the cultural mainstream we need subculture to keep creativity alive. I don't say we live in dark ages, in fact its a preparation age in every aspect of modern civilazition. I think what we need is more music that will make people think and feel and not just move, music that will be with them after they leave the club. Mills is so right and true.
@akis723 Ok this is all well and good... but Jeff Mills plays dark, massively repetitve, brain frying techno... there is no thought in it... it's music to put you into a 'trance'.
I find myself closing my eyes and when I opening them I'm facing a totally different direction!
I love trance music but also techno and house... But I don't see where all the thoughtfulness connects to his music!
It's music so you don't HAVE to think if anything. Correct me if I'm wrong!
@echoplexb ok here it goes. its just a matter of personal preference. what you take as repetitive and brain frying i see it as higly conceptual and creative. mills' music, as 99% of techno and techno related music is highly abstract. abstraction has one key element: it let the listener to decide what to make of it. abstraction also let the other musician to present his/her own aspect of a music theme. its not about right or wrong but about angle of perception. i like abstract, it makes me think.

His Music is becoming more and more conceptual now days. There are not many djs and producers who can be so conceptual and focus on theory like Jeff.

@echoplexb: "jeff mills - the bells" = "massively repetitive, brain frying techno"?!!
