Whether or not he was "trying" to degrade Buddhism, his comment was implicitly insulting and arrogant. In so many words, he said that Tiger should convert because if he does than he will be "forgiven" somehow, and his guilt or whatever will go away.
All Hume did was speak, so I don't think going crazy over the situation is appropriate, but I would advise him to consider humility next time he wants to comment on religious beliefs.
