  • The members of Genesis have the greatest appreciation for John's work, and have said so.

  • I wish John would've received more recognition for his contributions to Genesis rather than being PC's "predecessor". His performances on Trespass fit the album like a glove. Thanks for the upload, kheo80!

    Rest in peace, John.

  • i heard the "not good enough drummer" claims before i heard trespass and within a minute of looking for someone i was shocked they really must have been setting their sites high if someone that amazing on the drums wasn't good enough

  • John was great on Trespass, my favourite album, too. Don`t forget: Peter and Anthony suggested even most of the drum parts to him, so he played, what they wanted, basically. John was the right drummer for that kind of music, which went with Anthony's departure, sadly. I really don't like Phils Live-Perfomance on "The Knife". I don't like his backing vocals either. By the way: The first Genesis-drummer was a certain Peter Gabriel (although they were named, of course, The Garden Wall, then).

  • Deep Genesis fans, both old and new, will never forget John Mayhew. R.I.P.

  • I've always wondered about the 7 minute song lengths too. Any longer or shorter and they would not be nearly the same/as good. John's drumming fit right into Tony's keyboards and the twelve strings.

  • I'm going to listen to The Knife now

  • Wow..I'm saddened by this news of John's passing. I just found out a few minutes ago, and I l came to this clip to express my condolences.

I repeat as to my earlier comment on this clip, that John did a fantastic job drumming on the Trespass album, and I really wish he had stayed for at least one more album. Even though Phil

Collins was more of what the other band members were looking for, John was much more appropriate for Trespass' warmth & evocation, and a great compliment to Ant's fare.

  • And of course John wasn't the best drummer in the world, certainly not anywhere near PC, but then again, who is ? Trespass has lots of amateurish sides, production and sound could have been far better, but as a whole it just freaks me. One of my absolute favourite albums. One must be a dull human being not to discover the beauty of this rough diamond of an album.

RIP John. You came to see us all before you left us much too soon. Thank you for your contribution.

  • Every comment is more than welcome, especially when it comes from a true Genesis lover...and just 16 yrs old! Keep on going!

There's an interesting article by Tony Banks on the Genesis official website about John's death. I praise everyone to take a look at it!

Hope to hear from you soon, Genesis lover! ;)

  • RIP John Mayhew.

I feel sorry for his brother, who was searching for him...finding him like this is horrible.

Every critic that has reviewed 'Trespass' that I have read the report by has said that John Mayhew was a 'weak drummer' and 'needed replacing'. What total rubbish. He was a great drummer in my eyes.

By the way, I just thought I'd correct the 'about section' for this video...John was the third drummer, not the second. Chris Stewart came first, John Silver came second.

    RIP.

  • you're right, Saul! He's been the 3rd drummer, it's my fault, sorry... But we're here to revive his memory now and for me he'll be forever the 1st one. Believe me, i had the luck to meet him as u can see on my video... u have no idea of how kind and humble he was. Stil have his picture and his dedication "thanks for being my best fan" hanging on the wall. I'll never forget him... And as a drummer i can say that his work on Trespass was absolutely amazing. Stop saying bullshit, people!

    R.I.P.

  • I take no notice of the critic's that say that Genesis were right to get rid of him...I think the other's probably decided to let him go because of the songwriting aspect more than the drumming one, he didn't write for the band as far as I can tell, Phil is the first drummer who did it seems. Most of the critic's seem to think that Rob Tyrell was Genesis' first drummer, so they can talk! Rob Tyrell was the drummer from The Anon, Mike and Ant's band, Chris was from Garden Wall, the other group.

  • I actually wrote the wikipedia pages for Garden Wall and The Anon myself because I had the sources, and those critics really don't know what they're on about.

Of course I agree he should be considered Genesis' first drummer, but I was speaking about chronological order, not prefered order. :)

Whenever anyone criticizes 'Trespass' the first person they target is John, but when I first heard the album about 3 1/2 years ago when I was 13 the drumming really caught my attention.

  • I also have heard about how humble he is. I read an interview with him and Ant Phillips online, Ant picked up on his humbleness when they met each other again after about 30 years apart. A shame he didn't play on Ant's solo work...he was quite forgotten, which is terrible seeing as Ant and Mike wrote song's about his predecessor!

Sorry about the masses of comments, I had too much to say. :)

  • Hey, the media have changed their story now, apparently John was born on the 25th March and died a day after his birthday, not a day before.

  • we loved you john we still do.

  • Addio John!

  • Rest in ...Peace (Resignation) Little Great John !

  • RIP John! We will all miss you buddy!

  • RIP John Mayhew. Your drumming helped Trespass to be the album it is today.

  • Il Pete Best dei Genesis. RIP

  • Now i just hope the Genesis fans will not forget him... i think it'd be nice to show our consternation and somehow to mantain his memory alive. AND MOST OF ALL I HOPE THAT PETER & CO. WILL REMEMBER JOHN THE WAY HE DESERVES. Write down a line here, say goodbye to John.

    R.I.P.

  • It's hard to believe John passed away.Standing to what i know this is the only document on the whole net showing him as a "real" person, not just as a blurry picture on the Trespass album notes. I had the luck of being in Orvieto and spend a whole afternoon with him and as you can see on the video, he acted like he was our best friend. There's just one thing i want to remember about John. His extraordinary kindness and his sense of humour. He didn't deserve a destiny like this. He's gone. R.I.P.

  • Just found a few hours ago that John Mayhew had passed away. That bummed me out a whole lot. Heart-related cause. His brother Paul never got the chance to heal the rift between them from over 20 years or so. That bummed me out even more. I could never be without contact with my own brothers for more than a friggin' day!

So long, John... and to your brother, who tried to heal rift that should never have been.

    -Mike

  • I just found out this morning that he died last week. I didn't know he was back in the public eye (sort of). In the '70s and '80s, the story was that they couldn't even locate him to send him his royalties check. Trespass is my favorite album. Ever noticed that the 3 songs of side 1 are exactly 7:00 minutes?

  • Comment removed

  • The original LP cover says the three first songs are exactly 7 mins each.

Actually, they are not. The original LP cover takes liberties, so to speak. The CD says 7:08 - 6:43 - 6:53. I've checked both the CD and the LP with a stop watch (I was really bored one day, that's why), and I can confirm the CD cover tells the truth. But a lovely gimmick it was, and urban legends are aways fun, right ?

  • I'll just take your word for it then ;-)

  • John Mayhew the third drummer from genesis died on 26 March 2009

    R.I.P John

  • I have great memories working with John in New Zealand. Possibly the best drummer I've ever worked with. Just a "magic feel" I've put up a clip with him playing "Smoke gets In your eyes"

  • i always wondered what happened to this drummer....i learned to play drums by inspiration from early prog rock...trespass is in deed a favorite....thanks for posting..also i think the record states he dissa peared....in one of the genesis books

  • I congratulate you for this. I envy you a lot!! Greatings from Chile to you all!!

  • Wow! This is absolutely wonderful seeing this. I think John did a great job drumming in the Trespass album. A masterpiece! I also think that Genesis took on a very different direction without he and Anthony Phillips(12 string genius). I loved Genesis post Trespass as well but still keep thinking of the wonderful direction they would still have been in with Ant & John. Cheers!

  • Fantastico!!!!

  • you said it, man! He's our best friend!

  • You all show alot of love for a seemingly great person who was in the best band that has ever been. Great comments.

    Thank you all.
