the size of Persian army is highly exaggerated how can a country have 250,000 soldiers in 500 bc.the real number is close to 40k to 50k which is too much for that time.
@rouzbeh61 Persia was not a country but an empire, and it controlled more than enough land and population to raise those numbers, as for accuracy in who did what, who knows...fact is the greeks defeated the persians at the end of all things.
@Kamadeva01 if you read history then you know there have boon hundreds of battle between Persia and Greece. the only parts that Europeans glorify are the skirmishes of Xerxes and Alexander. They never mention many Greeks defeats at the hands of Persians. From sea battles to lands battles in more than 200 years they were constantly kept in bay and defeated, until Alexander came with Macedonian army in time of chaos in Persia. Nobody question Alexander military talent.
@Kamadeva01 If you want to be fair you better mention your side of defeats as well. About the numbers it is highly exaggerated there is no single proof that show how Herodotus count the Persian troops. Even now many historian question credibility of Herodotus about the early greco-persian wars. Modern historian put the numbers between 40k to 75k and that the number of combatant. In thermopylae the Greek numbers were more that 300, each spartan had 8 helots and there were other greeks too.
@rouzbeh61 "my side", dude i'm neither greek nor do I care about them, you're just in denial...whoever said history is written by the winner(s) never spoke truer words.
i wonder what carthage would have to say about the romans...oh, wait they were wiped out(city and all), consider it lucky that Alexander didn't erase persia from existence, true fact.
and this is my 2nd and last reply + some advice, don't preach on the internet, no one listens, even if you're right.
@Kamadeva01 Your ID is Indian, and you can be a jealous one like as many as I have meet on the net, but I am not sure about your real identity, so nothing more about that. Here is free and I can preach were ever I want. I say truth and here a place to debunk euro-centric vision on history. Alexander could not erase the Persia because of its vast land. In fact he claim himself and Achaemenid king to receive the public support. He started to grow interest in Persian culture.
@rouzbeh61 no my ID is not indian it's Ka+Ma+Deva...Deva is the city in my country where i was born and "Ka/Ma" ar my names (Kaminski Marius)...i'm polish-romanian.
@rouzbeh61 you are true there were also 10 000 solders from Athens -we learn so in Greece!when they saw the persian army and they were circuled most of them get lost !
The Eurocetric Historians and their pride that has been smashed by Persians made them to comment on the favor of European-side. I am sick of this bullshit. Why a scholar goes beyond the imagination and make bullshit comments. Stick to the documents and story that you already have. Why there are so many movies and documentary about some skirmishes but not about about big lost in European history?
hello everyone, im currently doing a very large project in my class about the battle of thermopylae. I will need a source from over the net that knows quite a bit of stuff about this battle, PLEASE if you could give me some information for my project it would be much appreciated.
That's a 1:35 ratio. This is impossible to win. I would believe if it was 15 000 vs 100 - 200 000
Men get tired, except if you have some sort of mutation, that's why it's impossible for 7000 to fight 250 000 and deal massive damage. Now they did delay the Persians, but they surely did NOT wipe out at least 25% of the Persian army.
@idricool Nothings impossible; 200 years people knew it was impossible to fly, 500 years people knew the world was flat and 2491 years ago xercses knew he would defeat greece, you don't know everything,
@idricool My statistics were not supposed to be correct I was just trying to make a point by expressing that nothings impossible and 'knew he would defeat' makes perfect sense, because xerxes believed he would destroy greece. Stop trying to make me look stupid to win over a freindly debate.

@Born2BeYourBaby Didn't Leonidas send the others back though so that only the 300 men were left in the end? I mean who would kill off just a small group when their side consists of thousands?
@rouzbeh61 sorry for my comment i was childish and racist for putting it up, it was a while ago. im sorry dont think im like that i now have much Persian friends :)
The whole scenario of what happened in this battle is totally from the Greek pespective which may have been very biased to bring out the bravery of their own troops. The historians have no record from the Persian side. The Greeks could say whatever they wanted to and no one would argue with them. Who knows if the Greeks were really outnumbered. The thin wicker shields that the Persians used is pure nonsense. The Greeks could say whatever they wanted and get away with it.
@d1jason1 Its also Persian history too Jason, remember they lost. they also recorded that they took Leo's head and brought it back with them. check your history.
Errrr.... Go read again about ancient warfare. Wicker shield for persians is 100% accurate.

stay off drugs dude. The Macedonia city state HAS NOTHING TO DO with the part of YUGOSLAVIA that has broken apart and call themselves Macedonians in nowdays. The boundaries of Macedonia city state were within Greek soil of course after Alexander the Great even Turkey would call themselves Macedonians since most of the known world was conquered and was enjoying it...
well im not greek and its just common knowledge, macedonians are greek so again educate yourself and when you do,study all sides of the story read greek history read western history even persian and arab history and in it all you will find macedonians are greek.
Maceonia, until Alexanders fathers, was like the nerd in class room that never got invited to any of the parties and wasn't that cool at all.
Yes they where greek, but behind the other greek city states in devolpement. Until alexanders father used the langs riches to devolpe his country more, then build the best and most discplined army the world had ever seen, which alexander used to conquer the world with.
@blabloempa i like yr writing style and u r right , my strong objection to willem and fucks like that are because of their stubborness to claim OUR history and use it for the name of their 15 year old country , u r former yugoslavians so SHUT THE FUCK UP
Phillip was a hostage in Thebes about 5 years... There he learned the Greek language and war-skills which later used it against them at Methone 352 BC where he lost his one eye, at Chaeronea 338 BC and of course, his son Alexander continue with Philip's discovered army in Asia and conquering the world...
I wished the people who made these skins released them to the general public as a mod or add on. It'd be fun to play as the Persians or Greeks with their more historical garbs.
india is the most useless nation on earth, such a big population and a very poor contribution to mankind. democracy was a greek idea you fool. greece and persia lay the footprints for all the sciences you have mentioned.
@christbone india have worlds first university wich 2500 years old, astrology made in India,
astrological sings made in India ,lord Nataraja a first dancer on Earth ,Ram setu a first bridge on sea water ,art of Tattu made in India , first dimond production was in India.in india basically civilization was invented
@TheAshwinisgod lol where did yu get that ? Indian creator of modern math ? lol why dont you say that Hitler inveted the bow and arrow that the indian used in attacking adversaries, or the chinese created the first modern machine and that henry ford copied if from them lol, or tell the world that the asian have the most powerful weaponry during WW2 using catapult, bow, sling, cannon balls, chako, arnis de mano(eskrima) kuntao, guntin, karatemkung fu,sabate, aikido, water cannon with sulphuric acid
@christbone If you've got no idea what you're talking about why don't you just shut up? Is there anything you get for presenting yourself as an idiot?
Why must one side be evil and barbaric and the other not? Can we not agree that both sides had well developed cultures with their good sides and their bad sides? Like any human culture?
As for the turban...must one be muslim to wear one? Are non-muslims allergic to them? A turban is a useful piece of clothing in the desert, no more, no less.
I like how the History Channel's version of history has the Persian scout wearing a turban, as though he is a "muslim" Hahahahahahahahaha!
Unfortunately the History channel is nothing more than a fictional comedy of actual history.
The uneducated jealous jews that work there get their facts from fictional Holyjude movies and video games like the old 80's version of Prince of Persia and use it to come up with their version of fictional history along with fictional costumes, maps etc.
You are wrong friend, they DID wear a turban. What is more, the Persian King, was the only one that had its turban "standing up", where the rest wore it "falling sideways".
Calling the History Channel uneducated is so wrong...
Between believing you, and looking at centuries of Persian artwork from that era which clearly show the Persians and Medes wearing various types of hats signifying their region I am going to go with historical evidence and recorded fact...sorry bud.
You obviously don't know what you are talking about.
wow, the history show us in each culture that we been fight for greed and pride , basicly for ignorance.
And we are 2009 and you guys still arguing about it? gime a break I hope that 2012 is true , and we all die and the next civilisation came more peacefully. Peace people, we alredy have enough fight in this world.
Actually the Persians had abolished slavery and brought 200 years of peace and prosperity. It was the barbarians from greece and macedonia that brought chaos, murdered civilians and re-introduced slavery.
The University of Chicago has stolen 30,000 clay tablets from Iran which clearly give the payment amounts for Persian workers, very precisely.
Men and women were paid equally and women even got "maternitly leave"
Yeap, they had abolished slavery, they were in fact very peaceful! That is why they had Kings, they conquered almost all of the known ancient world and they tried to conquer ancient Greece at least on 2 occasions. They were the real pacifists!
You are right, it was those filthy barbarians, the Greeks that brought chaos! This uncivilised tribe, with their stupid theatre, democracy, poetry, philosophy, astronomy, geometry and medicine contributions to mankind!
calling theatre, democracy, poetry philosophy, astronomy and medicine stupid just goes to show who the real uncivilised people were and how fucked in the head you are,and speaking of drugs stay off them mate.
well the Total War series is one of the best ever made. And It makes the battles seem much more real than just 10 guys reenacting it. But this is a great series!
@vagelis1453 so what? they got a contract from the makers (the creative assembly) because they didn't have a high ebough budget to do it in real life. watch all your history: the creative assembly. it's a great vid series here on youtube
The Phokian Wall the Greeks are standing behind is pretty much a garden wall here in this recreation. In old times for the battle it was really a large structure sloped on both side rising to a lengthway axis. The idea being not to have a wall that had a flat wall which the enemy could pin you against, but make them go up a steep rising slope built across the pass. Harder for them to use their numbers to push you back. It had crumbled to nothing but the Spartans build it up again before battle
This is not historically accurate as in reality the pass was set between a massive wall of cliffs and mountain to the left and a cliff like drop to the sea below on the right. The fighting zone was a triangle shaped zone between the Phokian wall and the narrowest point of the pass, around the other side - out of sight - the Persian Kings satraps waited their turn to be sent into battle.
google image "Thermopylae" and you will see. These days its pretty silted/eroded so you wont see the "narrowness" of old in the modern setting. You will see a highway that runs through the old pass to the right, in modern Greece and this represents the full width of the old pass as a guide.
stuffed up my post so I try again. Well now you told me its Rome Total War, I am keen to get that game. Wouldnt mind listening to this while gaming anytime.
But becuz king leonidas was to arrogant to defend the secret passage that he KNEW about, led to their defeat... what alot of peopel dont no, was that their were reinforcements on the way
WRONG BRO THE LOCAL HOPLITES FROM FOKIDA TERRITORY WERE order to guard the path from Leonidas, but when they saw first immortals to each their posts, they flle the patha without a fight...Leonidas was out flank
Ioannis is correct. There were defenders on the pass but they werent the die hard Greeks so they bailed out and decided to run back to their farms to live another day. Sad but true.
The greeks were DEFENDING their home.. so the persians were attempting to push through to the town.. so think of it this way. you have a door and ther persians are outside. the CLOSED door is the spartans, and the greeks are running through the back door
winston churchill said that HEROES fight like GREEKS and that battle proves that 100%!iam so proud to be born greek!oh i forgot:MACEDONIA is GREEK and only GREEK!!
@nino555 unfortunately your professor was obviously an idiot or you were the one who did not listen.. Spartan constitution was nothing like Persian...their tyrants had very little power, they had a citizen assembly that had the biggest power..but..why do I even bother...
Gareth45. i think your a persian due to the way you speak and disguise the spartans. You seem to be wanting revenge and are being racist. Well guess what these spartans are better than you and they would've rip ur head off your spine and toss them to the ground laughing
Those of you that enjoy the history of thermopylae should read gates of fire. It gives a great perspective from pressfield about what it would have been like to be a spartan during this. I thought the count of monte cristo was the ultimate guys book and the best i had ever read. But Gates of fire is a must for anyone who respects what the spartans did, and i think that entails everybody (or atleast it should). Pressfield is witty and his war scenes are so vivid. Can't wait to read his othr works
Solution - leave at the very least 100,000 men to hold the Greek army in place. Send the remaining half around the Greek position. It doesn't matter if it takes days or weeks to flank...what are the Greeks going to do...come out and fight? If they run - they abandon their strong position. If they don't they are caught between two forces and destroyed. And that would have ended Greek History as we know it today...
A similar scenario occured when the Galatians invaded Greece, but the distracting/flanking force was routed by the Aetolians, who were detached from the main body guarding the Thermopylae pass.
Take this battle Termopylae, the Persian had this huge army at least 200,000+, Greeks around 7,000 but a strong defensive position. Hmm...it doesn't take a military genius to see the solution (if you happen to be the Persians).
70%??? thats bull, the idea of the phalanx in the small area, I would say is true, the way leonidas died is true, but the time he died, the way they fought after they got out of the area, and even the role of the thespians (which all that takes up allot of the movie) are not very close to being true
it wasnt me tht said it, . was some historians. and i think they did mention tht they placed thespians at the goat path and tht they ran away when the persians came
I cant remember who they were, but it wasnt the thespians... and they didnt run, they just thought the persians were going to attack their town village thing, so they left to defend it

Message to all Greeks and people of Hellenic descent.
Just because your ancestors were badass doesnt mean you are. in fact most of you are pussys. i would never bring a woman into your country out of fear of your disgusting hairy men touching them.

I am of Italian descent but my race tries to often defend the greeks shut your racist fucking ass up if you don't have any thing nice to say than shut your fucking asshole mouth. God gave you two ears and one mouth to listen so shut your dumb fuck stupid ass up. Greece is still Bad asses. Greece can slaughter the world without triing. Now lets hear what u gotta say
ummm, sorry to tell you, but the Greeks weren't the awesome fighters, the Spartans were, the Greeks were all gay (literally) so if you haven't noticed by now I have them in two different category's
gareth45, I believe you are a descendant of the slaves of the Persians(The Arabs). From the way you talk, you don't respect the Greeks. Now, you're looking for vengeance for the Persians and the Arabs by joining the Al Qaeda. Fuck you gareth45.
very informative and educative video thanks for that! i am Persian and proud to be a Persian! what ever happened 3000 years ago it's got nothing to do with now, we can be very good friends, peace to Persians and Greeks! god bless.
thats the point my friend... now america is the percians and spartans is you.... the greeks didnt fight for glory or territory... they where the first men that figth for their families for their people... for freedom my friend...

To be honest i agree - you could slash with a glaius. But thats not how the tended to be used, and that doesnt exactly add an extreme versatility to batle plans as you have suggested. XD
I said I sword can be used as both a thrusting and a slashing weapon, just because a Roman gladius was used primarily for thrusting does not negate that fact.
I certainly did not claim that the roman army used it's versatility...I don't know where you got that from...I would say and most historians would agree that lack of versatility was a weakness of the roman army, yes that is somewhat of a generalization, the Roman army lasted over a thousand years.
I would also say and have said that versatility was a great strength of the Assyrian army and was probably the strongest army of ancient times in that respect.
Actually, the Roman army's discipline was what made it so good. They made a camp whenever they stopped marching, so a suprise attack was impossible, and their army was well trained. If they came across a sword that was better than theirs (the Spanish one), then they adapted and copied it.
A thousand years?!!? Are you fucking drunk?!! Rome didn't last that long!!
You fail! Go home. No historian would agree with you!

Wasn't really like athens or sparta.

The uneducated jealous jews that work there get their facts from fictional Holyjude movies and video games like the old 80's version of Prince of Persia and use it to come up with their version of fictional history along with fictional costumes, maps etc.
greggysr 2 years ago
You are wrong friend, they DID wear a turban. What is more, the Persian King, was the only one that had its turban "standing up", where the rest wore it "falling sideways".
Calling the History Channel uneducated is so wrong...

GraceBarra 2 years ago 2
Actually the Persians had abolished slavery and brought 200 years of peace and prosperity. It was the barbarians from greece and macedonia that brought chaos, murdered civilians and re-introduced slavery.
The University of Chicago has stolen 30,000 clay tablets from Iran which clearly give the payment amounts for Persian workers, very precisely.
Men and women were paid equally and women even got "maternitly leave"
greggysr 2 years ago
Yeap, they had abolished slavery, they were in fact very peaceful! That is why they had Kings, they conquered almost all of the known ancient world and they tried to conquer ancient Greece at least on 2 occasions. They were the real pacifists!
You are right, it was those filthy barbarians, the Greeks that brought chaos! This uncivilised tribe, with their stupid theatre, democracy, poetry, philosophy, astronomy, geometry and medicine contributions to mankind!

It had crumbled to nothing but the Spartans build it up again before battle
aeonflux67 2 years ago
This is not historically accurate as in reality the pass was set between a massive wall of cliffs and mountain to the left and a cliff like drop to the sea below on the right. The fighting zone was a triangle shaped zone between the Phokian wall and the narrowest point of the pass, around the other side - out of sight - the Persian Kings satraps waited their turn to be sent into battle.
aeonflux67 3 years ago
google image "Thermopylae" and you will see. These days its pretty silted/eroded so you wont see the "narrowness" of old in the modern setting. You will see a highway that runs through the old pass to the right, in modern Greece and this represents the full width of the old pass as a guide.

Can't wait to read his othr works
pizinger23 3 years ago
Solution - leave at the very least 100,000 men to hold the Greek army in place. Send the remaining half around the Greek position. It doesn't matter if it takes days or weeks to flank...what are the Greeks going to do...come out and fight? If they run - they abandon their strong position. If they don't they are caught between two forces and destroyed. And that would have ended Greek History as we know it today...
mantic0251 3 years ago
A similar scenario occured when the Galatians invaded Greece, but the distracting/flanking force was routed by the Aetolians, who were detached from the main body guarding the Thermopylae pass.
the5thillusion 3 years ago
Take this battle Termopylae, the Persian had this huge army at least 200,000+, Greeks around 7,000 but a strong defensive position. Hmm...it doesn't take a military genius to see the solution (if you happen to be the Persians).

some historians say 300 was up to 70% accurate, i couldnt believe it myself, espiacelly as there was some mythology in tht film as well
lgr1991 3 years ago
70%??? thats bull, the idea of the phalanx in the small area, I would say is true, the way leonidas died is true, but the time he died, the way they fought after they got out of the area, and even the role of the thespians (which all that takes up allot of the movie) are not very close to being true
jimmy1deen 3 years ago
it wasnt me tht said it, . was some historians. and i think they did mention tht they placed thespians at the goat path and tht they ran away when the persians came
lgr1991 3 years ago
I cant remember who they were, but it wasnt the thespians... and they didnt run, they just thought the persians were going to attack their town village thing, so they left to defend it

Soccerman1995 4 years ago
To be honest i agree - you could slash with a glaius. But thats not how the tended to be used, and that doesnt exactly add an extreme versatility to batle plans as you have suggested. XD
onebeaat 4 years ago
I said I sword can be used as both a thrusting and a slashing weapon, just because a Roman gladius was used primarily for thrusting does not negate that fact.
I certainly did not claim that the roman army used it's versatility...I don't know where you got that from...I would say and most historians would agree that lack of versatility was a weakness of the roman army, yes that is somewhat of a generalization, the Roman army lasted over a thousand years.
Douglas1102 4 years ago
I would also say and have said that versatility was a great strength of the Assyrian army and was probably the strongest army of ancient times in that respect.
Douglas1102 4 years ago
Actually, the Roman army's discipline was what made it so good. They made a camp whenever they stopped marching, so a suprise attack was impossible, and their army was well trained. If they came across a sword that was better than theirs (the Spanish one), then they adapted and copied it.
A thousand years?!!? Are you fucking drunk?!! Rome didn't last that long!!
You fail! Go home. No historian would agree with you!
