AMAZING! Thanks much for this ! I've had the studio version from the Jazz album since the late 70s or so. Had never heard it live though. Simply wonderful Music!
Hi, Ed...Are you familiar with the work of Ry Cooder--who some consider the best slide guitarist ever. I'm sorry I discovered a guy like this so late...Actually, first heard him live at the Big Apple to the Big Easy concert at Madison Square Garden after Hurricane Katrina.
When the USA sent the Voyager spacecraft out into the solar system, with a cargo of recordings of human intelligence, Sagan was asked if they should include some Ry Cooder. He said "no, no, no! We don't want to show off - just put in some Beethoven
If I had one chance to go anywhere in a time machine... It would be there in the front row. I can't express how much I love the songs from this night.
@danmiller66 Comment from WesleyvanH: "That Vox Mandoguitar Ry's playing is a octave twelfe. A hybrid with a short-scale 12-string guitar neck and a small solid electric guitar body. It's usually tuned one octave higher than a standard guitar with the pairs of strings tuned in unison rather than in octaves as is the case of standard 12-string guitars. This puts the instrument in the same range as a mandolin."
@mbroders I think that the 12-string mandogit is tuned to open A. Typically, these short neck guitars are tuned to G or A (not a whole octave). My experience has been that getting the intonation right on small guitars is very difficult. Only Ry Cooder could play this thing and make it look effortless.
I know Jesus is on that mainline Tell Him what you want Jesus is on that mainline Tell Him what you want Jesus is on that mainline Tell Him what you want Call Him up and tell Him what you want Well, the line ain't never busy Tell Him what you want Wo, that line ain't never busy Tell Him what you want Well, the line ain't never busy Tell Him what you want Keep on calling Him up And tell Him what you want Well, if you want His kingdom Tell Him what you want
That's not a mandolin, too many strings, it looks like a vox 12 string with a short neck, i have a mandolin of which there's only a few a ry does have one...
AWESOME. Being harp player (blues harp) in a praise/ worship band, I love this!! Rare opportunity I get to hear something this good, even rarer I get to play such.
I've always loved this song...I'm used to a primitive version from Ry which I love. This is even better! WOW! Thanks for posting the info. I've got to get to a music store...FAST!
This song makes me like jesus is on the main the line it is so spiritual. The line is never busy tell him what you want, call him up and tell him what you want xx
@dogofman It's a Vox Electric Mando Guitar, A 12 string electric guitar with a short neck that has the tonal quality of a mandolin. The same as if you capo-ed a regular guitar at the 12th fret except that unlike a 12 string guitar the pairs or courses of strings are tuned in unison instead of octaves. A regular electric mandolin would be either a 4 string or 8 string (in courses) instrument.
Thank you very much. Someone already replied something similar. I find this kind of info awesome.
But as I understood, it's not necessarily a Vox brand but more likely a replica since they seem to only have to produced their variety of instruments a couple years in the sixties.
One of the best mando players of all time! Him and Dereck Trucks I would say are the best blue eyed blues players alive. Amazing slide peace great. Is his mando a fender Awsome tone
Ry Cooder rocks. IMHO he's the best guitar player alive, and probably had more influence on the sound of the Rolling Stones than any other musician. I believe that he wrote Country Honk and the Stones ripped him off, and after he worked with them as a studio musician all of a sudden Keith is playing in open tunings....did he teach Keith those?
Hmm, he was essentially in The Stones in the late 60s. I don't think he gives a crap, tons of stuff in the mainstream is uncredited. A Ry autobiography would be an interesting read though!
@uncledevo I think you're on to the truth of it man...I heard they asked Ry to join the band and he turned em down so use him and lose him...Jagger also ripped off Billy Preston on the song, Melody .. "hey, it's just business"
when usa sent voyager out into the solar system with recordinds9 of human inteligence carl sagan (astronomer \scientist)was asked shall we add some ry cooder and he said "no no no we dont want to show off"just put in some beethoven.
Asif in ay cosmos ..pff...someone had ears ,a body or would ever be interested in humans! And God? HE ,would have needed a million of sons to save all the living planets too. Atheist believe crap ,becoz they believe in their own only.
@rogerredcat Yea your probably right ry cooder is much more impressive than single handedly starting the romantic era and bridging the gap between that and the classical era.
I agree it's most likely a short scale unison strung 12 string tuned in open G (or another of Ry's impossible tunings!). My late father and I bought a small "toy" electric guitar from an electonics store some years ago, because we found it was actually a proper instrument! The scale looks similar to Ry's guitar (22 inches), and it naturally tunes to A (Equiv. capo 5th fret). Mine is a 6 string, wiith just one single coil pickup, but it just sounds so sweet! Especially when played with a slide!
@TheAzza1121 Yeah, my first thought was it was a 12-string "travel" guitar, then a solid mandoline. But my ears told me different. Reading the comments I went full screen and used the pause button: if you get it right about 1:16-1:19 and get a nice clean frame it looks like it's only got 6 strings on, with which my ears agree. And this seems to be borne about 4:50-5:00 with a close-up of the headstock.
@oceanplanet602 I think Ry Cooder is a super underrated musician. I mean, I hardly know ANYONE who knows who he is, or has ever even heard of him or his music.
But why?! I mean, Ry Cooder is such an amazing musician, it blows my mind! He's one of the best guitarists I've ever heard.
@TheAzza1121 a trick studio guitarists use is taking a 12 string guitar and putting a capo on the 12 fret, it makes it sound like a mandolin, but you dont have to learn how to play the mandolin.
this guitar that Ry is playing is a 12 string except the nut is where the 12th fret should be on a regular electric 12 string.

Yesterday I was at Sant Jordi Club in Barcelona and I think I can make an statement: fortunately, the music of Ry Cooder is still in evolution: they played this "anthem" and the arrengements were amazing like lightning over water and... completely new.
mann...i dont belive in god(in the biblical sesne)...but this sure makes me wonder :) ive been jamming along with this all day, ry has the most amazing emotion in his playing, the piano and trumpet solo were both just so fantastic, i love the way the dont over-power the song, they just contribute...beautiful peice of music

If you look at the headstock, there are 12 tuners. And if you listen to the tuning, it's not tuned in fifths like a mandolin is. It's more or less an equivalent of having a capo at the 12th fret of a 12 string guitar.
If you google "Vox Mando Guitar" you'll find the exact model that he's playing. It might have Mando in the name, but the tuning and number of strings is 100% guitar.
i was actuallly at a blues festival in Toronto this past weekend and a great Canadian guitarist named Kevin Breit played slide on an electric mandolin accompanied by Harry Manx on lap slide guitar
Ry Cooder is a musical genious and i wish i could purchase this on DVD but supposedely it's only sold in Japan....oh and i wish he was still touring...i'm only 19 and i would be absolutely thrilled to see this master play
Will listen to Ry Cooder hailing a cab. The only thing I miss here is that the horns on the recorded version of this had a sweet "Salvation Army band" feel to the horns. This is a little jazzier, slicker, and isn't quite the same.
If you like the song, Sweet Honey in the Rock did another great version, too.
Ry Cooder is the most underrated American pop musician, in my book.l
dude that willie guy has a huge range with his voice. or whatever i'm dutch so don't blame me for the misspelled/false words :-) ry rocks (what a nice joke)
A REAL genius, places people around him that enhance what he's trying to achieve...Ry Cooder does this absolutely with the great musicians that he surrounds himself with....ROCK ON!!! this is too good...LOL
Grrrreat music! Ry Cooder is made of music!

it is an electric mandolin
SupremoHumberto 2 years ago
If you look at the headstock, there are 12 tuners. And if you listen to the tuning, it's not tuned in fifths like a mandolin is. It's more or less an equivalent of having a capo at the 12th fret of a 12 string guitar.
If you google "Vox Mando Guitar" you'll find the exact model that he's playing. It might have Mando in the name, but the tuning and number of strings is 100% guitar.

Ry Cooder is a musical genious and i wish i could purchase this on DVD but supposedely it's only sold in Japan....oh and i wish he was still touring...i'm only 19 and i would be absolutely thrilled to see this master play
Jeremy123454 2 years ago
Will listen to Ry Cooder hailing a cab. The only thing I miss here is that the horns on the recorded version of this had a sweet "Salvation Army band" feel to the horns. This is a little jazzier, slicker, and isn't quite the same.
If you like the song, Sweet Honey in the Rock did another great version, too.
Ry Cooder is the most underrated American pop musician, in my book.l
