    Rock on Roy !!!

  • Happy birthday Roy !!

  • Best musical genius ever ...welcome home lol

  • Roy Harper is a Genius a true unsung hero

  • go on you good thing

  • @JackyRowe, how could I have forgotten Clare Torry, you know she only received the standard rate ( at that time ) £35.00 I think it was for a session singer!

Years later ( through litigation ) a more appropriate fee was paid! Quite right too.

  • allsome guitar

  • mindblowing!

  • Thanks so much for this clip. I had it on an old Beta tape but the audio was stuffed.

    Tony

  • Sweet tone out that Ovation !

  • Kenny, it looks like an Ibanez, but it's as much what's between the guitar and the amp -- including both player and echo effects -- as it is the Ibanez.

  • ein leider fast vergessenes musik-genie ;-)

  • Amazing :-)))

  • Deathcruzer: Roy sang on the album ' Wish You Were Here', he sang the lead vocal on ' Have A Cigar'----- I think he's the only person to sing the lead on a Pink Floyd song.... Apart from the Dave, Roger, Rick or Syd!!!! Obviously....Check out the track 'Once' by Roy Harper, Dave Gilmour plays the intro.Quite earie!

  • @KeeganBrooks Not forgetting the wonderful Clare Torry on The Great Gig in the Sky! And I've just found out that my cousin was there when he recordng Have a Cigar!! Lucky bastard!

  • Does any kind person know what guitar efx he's using here as I'd love to attempt

    this song......

    cheers Kenny

  • @flyfifer51 It's a swimming pool shaped guitar.

  • the beginning sounds a little irish

  • did roy sing wish you were here on pink floyd?

  • @deathzcruzer Uhm, he sung "Have A Cigar" on Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. He didn't sing any other song on that album.

  • This is from a live performance on Australia's ABC TV around 1985. The first time EVER I heard this song & fell in love with Roy Harper's music....this is from his BEST album STORMCOCK

  • This is from a live performance on Australia's ABC TV around 1985. The first time EVER I heard this song & fell in love with Roy Harper's music....this is from his BEST album STORMCOCK

  • Roy Harper a much admired & loved rock/folk Rock Legend

  • can see were is son nick gets it from

  • @Degbarawin1951 - I was lucky enough to see Roy play live a few times in the early 90's , one of which was in Chester in 91, Roy brought Nick on for the second half of the gig and they played Jugula through - Awesome.

  • GO ROY!

    We wuvs you!

Now... play some free-festivals and blind the kids with "McGoohans Blues"

    Love the man.

  • Is that supposed to look like a halo behind him . hats off to em !

  • Classic Roy ! A version of this on the album 'In between Every Line' is mesmorising. More intense than this performance. You must see him live if you get the chance. If not go see his son Nick Harper, he does things with a guitar no one else does.

  • @silkyscouse thanx mate got the tuning dont suppose you know where i can get a tab from cant find one at all.....or if yu can play it why dont you post it on you tube it will be a first!!!!

  • @jasonecc - I should, you're right!! I'll have to sort it, but bear with me ill try and devise a way to show you tab thru text, so you can get the basic jist of it!!

  • @silkyscouse ok m8 that would be fab!! got the intro but cant make out the chord shapes in the vids

  • does anybodt know the tunning!!

  • @jasonecc Its - D A D G A D, but he has his strings upto 6 semitones down from concert pitch. Then you need thicker strings! Once you get it - its so easy and enjoyable to play.

  • i fucking love this you know.

  • The man is a genius, a pisse genius but still!

  • Pure Genius

  • He's all Hair Metal in this vid!

  • Genius

  • someone who knows how is guitar is tuned?

  • @kjerstima normall various open tunigs like open C , not sure here but thats c g c gce

  • @kjerstima open c I think

  • Amazing, Love you Roy!

  • classic rock is doo doo.

  • @2013wolves Yeah, the songs are too long and the lyrics too deep for a lot of today's audience, afflicted by a 15 second attention span! :-) And, shit, they have more than 3 chords. Mind you, some of it WAS doo doo, but a lot of it will last until the USS Enterprise actually boldly goes......

  • does anybody know the unning for this song

  • Even better than the Stormcock studio version! Where can I find the mp3?

  • @troyjgrice Get your self Total Recorder software, you can then record anything and save in any format you want.

  • it puts the lotion on its back...it does this when its told

  • Interesting artist, beloved by lots of rock stars. I'm afraid I don't care much for his singing though. Sorry.

  • @ironbuttermilk Fok singers aren't supposed to be Pavarotti: look at Dylan, Loudon Wainwright, Randy Newman, Tom Waits - Not "pretty", but it's WHAT they're singing that counts. BTW, didn't you like Roy's vocal on "Gravy Train" on Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here"? A lot of people don't know that's him!

  • @PeterOzanne I did not say I didn't care for his vocals because of his vocal quality. I just don't like his sound.

  • @PeterOzanne ¨Have a Cigar¨.

  • Shit, the song is through but the most of the video is a fake. Rendered in a good studio.

  • @TMSearcher What does that mean in english - "the song is through"? Is that a typing mistake? BTW, Roy would never mime, that's hilarious! There's nothing I can hear on that recording that isn't simply delay/echo/reverb.

I think you're mistaken, and I would be surprised if anyone else agreed with you.

AH, yes, sometimes videos on youtube get a fraction out of synch with the sound, that's possible - and the quality's bad

  • @PeterOzanne Ups...! Yes, you're right. It was a typing mistake. I often make copy and paste to avoid such thinks. I think I've copied the wrong line:-(. Forgot this comment, I love this song. It's already in my play list since along time. And by the way; I'm playing also guitar and I can hear, what effects are used. He is for me a very great musician, cause I can feel what he plays, that's for me true and real music. Shit happens sometimes ;-) Mea culpa

    TMS

  • Of all the musicians on the planet, Roy has the most integrity (and some of the best tunes!)

  • Bill Nighy

  • seen roy many times 20 or so years ago locally he always ad a reefer on stage scouse weed always d best seen him with nik live set nik boss

  • So true never thought of it like that. His total empathy with the human condition says it all. I think he touches an emotional cord, it comes through the records, but the live experience is like a call to the faithful.

  • agree on the emoitional thing, though it's been near 20 years since I've seen him live, a Roy concert is a spiritual experience

  • Reminds me of another Roy....Bucannon(sp?)

  • Roy is The Man - reminding me of my first love - saw RH live In Oxford it was the best!

  • I was introduced to Roy by a friend (from the UK) in college in 1972.

    It was the Stormcock LP.

WOW ! I was blown away.

    Thanks for posting the video.

  • hats off to Roy Harper

  • @mystro810 I took my hat off for him.

  • This is a mazing sick shit Roy

you don't need your guns ,man we're already dead

  • you can see why jimmy page is such a big fan...

  • amazing man o man o man high greetings x

  • I first found Roy while he was being interviewed for a late night Rock programme, about 25 years ago.

He seemed perfectly normal, and told a story in a very emotional way that he once gave mouth to mouth resuscitation to a lamb,to his own detriment.

That is why it had taken months to record a new LP!.

Thought at the time it was a silly thing to do.

He then played a song from Stormcock, and I realised he was not a silly old hippy, but a master musician from a time that is now sadly long gone.

  • Ace

  • Mine too. Love the man. Who could you go and see live who connects on such an emotional level? Formed the backbone of my beliefs and his voice and poety live in the heart. Our greatest musical poet, you can keep all the rest, they cannot touch his emotional level.

  • My hero, too. Since about 1968. Thanks for posting the vid. Great.

  • My hero.

  • I first heard this guy 18years ago, for the first time, he still gives me major goose bumps, love him, God bless you Roy Harper ! x

  • who would have thought one man a guitar and a box of electronic stuff could produce such a fine piece of music.

  • love the guitar tone. its the same one jimmy page used throughout the 90's

  • heheh..its still burned on my soul seeing this gent play this..what a life changing experience at the time.. just him and an echo box.. he had us all in the palm of his hand.. and we all wanted to be there too. and the vibe in the place ( less than 250 ppl).. was awesome.. its a wonder he isn't locked in the cellar.. great times! kudos Roy.

  • Absolutely! Roy is able to project a whole band.

Roy has been ill I know that. He said something in Word Mag over the summer about Roy as in the music remaining in the future. To me he is vital in the sense that life is vibrant and real, poems to the heart. He also talked about Eminem and Moby, plus Floyd and other as competent but musical wallpaper, not too challenging. Stormcock community is worth checking out, some great interview with him.

  • Roy is God

  • if there is a god make him a little like roy

  • wow, absolutely classic Roy if I've ever seen it, and believe me I have.

one for the ages! thanks for posting!

    wordofgord

  • Hat's off to this fellow . . . . . .

  • i saw roy on this australian ,he played the tivoli rooms in sydney george st i think ? brilliant show ..ed kuepper was support .not as good as roy ,

  • my god i love that ending. So much passion and intensity :o

  • :::drool!::: this is so bloody good i feel like i want to explode. my soul is quenched. da*m, this is good! ...gives me the chills...i have the chills for 6 min. 59 seconds.

  • Great song well played!

  • sounds like early nick in this videp

  • he could have been on Swan Song, but for some reason he never wanted success

  • He's a sparrow in the gutter for sure!

  • Bloody 'ell! Longridge- at the civic hall, I remember it well, walked back to preston! went with cleggy, sat on crash helmets-so why did we walk home...when I see him I'll see if he knows, a lot of dudes sat on the tables at the back and the "comitee" weren't too happy about it.....halcyon days....

  • I was there. Played there twice i think. Was it Paul Clegg by any chance?

  • Roy at his very very best. I could watch this for days!!

  • Seen Roy many times over the years. Mostly shithot. Biggest crowd at Gasto in, i think '81. Smallest crown in Longridge, Preston of about 20 people with his son Nick as support. He was so pissed he fell off his chair but so what.. Still an underated superstar. Should be up there with Neil Young. One of the good guys.

  • Comment removed

  • @shakeyj2007 Ok then. He was so stoned he fell off his chair. Happy?

  • @graz100 he is Up There. Just the mainstream media never caught wind of that fact. Roy was such a big part of my teen years, we walked in the dark for miles to see a gig cos we couldn't afford the taxi. Plus saw him a few years ago at Norwich Arts Centre and got him to sign all Harper vinyl. Brilliant except he wrote it in a fekking great ugly marker pen right over the flip cover of Life Mask. Ah well. If somone's gonna fuck up your Roy Harper vinyl it might as well be Roy Harper :)

  • that's a Ovation brand guitar....very popular guitars

    during the 80's.....

  • it is an Ovation Adamas

  • Can anyone tell me the type of guitar used in this? I would be greatly appreciative.

  • masterpiece

  • WOW!

  • Feggin brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i forgot how good he was.

    lobelia sound

  • Not familiar with this wonderful musician, but his voice reminds me of T-Bone Burnett...

  • Totally Harper. Funniest, cleverest man alive. One man band, utterly there.

  • Excellent !!

I really missed something years ago by overlooking this guy.

  • Amazing. Genius.

  • Roy on modems - a machine for transferring data - 'The fastest modem I ever saw was two rabbits shagging on my lawn'. Typical Roy!

And yes, he is a thoroughly unclassifiable rock - and i'm a geologist!

  • Absolutely stunning performance

  • He looks almost like jesus here. He might not appriciate it but with that backdrop...he is a significantly different rock though

  • Excuse my ignorance, but what guitar is he playing? I've only ever seen that model twice, this time with Roy, and with the bloke from The Levellers.

  • That guitar is an Ovation. I think it is the Glenn Cambell model, not sure.

  • Roy Harper...A living Legend!!!

  • I can see his influence on Jimmy Page here- and it seems clear to me by his personality (and the Led Zeppelin song "Hat's Off to Roy Harper"!) that it wasn't vice versa...

  • this is good

  • source?

  • Harper!!!!! Brilliant. Shame about the Shave, he looks like a manic Clifford T Ward (not a good look)

  • PANTS OFF TO ROY HARPER

  • AMEN BROTHER

  • roy s best sound love it thanks any more of this

  • Echoes of once in there.... nice.

I saw Roy open for Genesis in 1978 at Knebworth Park, he does enjoy a good swear lol.

  • Mark was that when Roy wore a big red hat, sang One of those days in England and the sun split the clouds after a gloomy morning?

  • Hi I don't remember the hat but the weather was awful

  • Hats off.

  • I love Tanglewood guitars :O))

  • I thought this was an Ovation Adamis!

  • check out "one for all" on the "folkjokeopus " album

  • i have checked out "one for all" it blows my mind away each time i hear it, would somebody put it on youtube! ! !

  • Utterly brilliant posting - close your eyes and you can't believe it's a one man show!!!

    Roy is something else indeed.

Thank you very much for posting.

  • THANK YOU

  • Amazing clip - thanks so much for posting it! Straight onto the Favourites. Cheers.

  • Great post my man, loving this vid. Have seen him play this live many times with Nick, he always plays it better than he does on Stormcock, which goes to show just how great the man is. Long live Roy.
