@Hijodelaisla I totally agree. I'm not really a fan of her as Fantine or Fosca, and I am not really feeling her in this song. I bet she was an awesome Desiree in every other way though, which kind of sounds like a backhanded compliment.
I just have to put my two cents into the Patti vs. Bernadette argument. I do agree Bernadette owns this song, emotionally and vocally, however I have to say that it really gets to me when people say that Patti Lupone can not act. The woman is a Julliard graduate, and acts for the theater as she was trained. Therefore, a too-closeup version of Rose's Turn says nothing about her theatrical skills. Both women are brilliant in their own ways, and neck and neck in the business for good reason.
This song is very tricky, no matter how good singer you are because you can´t show off your voice with this number. This song has been made by dozens I'm a die hard fan of Lupone but it isn't her song, Shirley Bassey sang it too and I have the same emotion: all the singer can't sing all the songs, stick to what you do better. My faves are Streisand who can combine perfect voice, with phrasing and acting and Dame Judi Dench and probably my third vote goes to Barbara Cook.
Patti LuPone, while I agree she is a Broadway legend, Sondheim is not her strong suit! Bernadette Peters is, however, a far better Sondheim performer!
Yes of course Bernadette is better. Dramatic interpretation is not Lupone's strength. Her delivery always has the subtlety and sensitivity that you would expect from say a drunk drag queen. Belting out a Broadway standard- that is when you want Lupone. (BTW, Mama Rose is a subtle character, and while Lupone hit the notes and hit them rather loudly, the character was completely lost. Mama Rose in her hands was some mental asylum escapee. She rocked Evita. Stick to ALW, Patti. Leave Sondheim alone
Patti has her interpretation and it's a good one. A diva, there's an arrogance and vulnerability there, but also a lot of pride. It's different, the character is not likable much here, but it's certainly not worth dismissing this interpretation.
rubs me the wrong way in EVERYTHING-- Except Evita, she was an amazing Evita but..... other that I'm sorry, please don't kill me but I just prefer Bernadette Peters' acting and singing and well everything!
@tbwhan It's just weird......Patti and her uh...large tracts of land. I swear, in some shows she does, they should get a mention in the Playbill......
Her voice is far too robust and sing-songy for this. I saw Bernadette do this two nights ago -- It was understated, heartbreaking, and poignant. Patti's is almost wooden, I have to say.
@sonson226 Yeah! Catharine keped doing crazy movements. Like loking back and fourth rapidly. It was.... odd. I however, EXHALT Dame Judi's version. It's gold to me.
@sonson226 Catherine Zeta-Jones was phenominal in the role. At the Tony's she was acting a bit different while singing it. For one, she didn't turn her head as many times like she did at the Tony's.
Also, I love Patti's version! She sings it just how Sondheim intended it to sound like. :)
@risingdancer Actually Glynis Johns sang it how Sondheim intended it to sound like. Because, you know, he WROTE the song for her voice. He's also stated that he prefers this song sung by people who aren't legitimate singers because they won't over sing it. This is an actor's song, not a singer's song. He's also now gone public in "Finishing the Hat" that Johns was and still is his favorite rendition (not that he doesn't love others).
@roccoh21 no actually she is not to old because right now at this moment bernadette peters age 62 is doing this exact play singing this exact song of course people think she is better at it because bernadette has "better" emotion than Patti when it comes to songs like this. I love them both dearly but i think...oh i dont no who has dont it better :)
I think I just watched her slaughter that song in cold blood...yep...I'm pretty sure that's what it was...I hated it...It was so presentational--too much Patti...
She's lovely. When did she do this??? I saw Dame Judy four times in London. I wonder what CZJ will do with the role in the upcoming revival. I really like this show and would have loved to have seen Patti in it.
OH MY GOD! I cannot beleive she did this! its like 2 of my favorite things in one!!!! she should sing this on an album... anybody know where this was? Its hard to think who has done this role regionally (its shocking)...even Donna McKeknie

If you really want to hear this song done well and unparalleled, then check out Sarah Vaughn's version of this song. It will make your toes tingle.

Sorry, Patti - I adore you, but you can't beat out Glynis Johns. (Your voice, however, remains flawless.)

I am not usually a LuPone fan but I thought this was just about the best version except for Julie Andrews. Exquisite.

Patti LuPone is a great actress, but her interpretation here ruins the mood of the song here, too over the top

Though you can't beat Dame Judi in regards to acting value, no one can deny that this is superbly sung. Patti's vocal transitions are flawless.

I have always imagined her as a Petra if I'm honest, of course when she was younger. However, this is very beautifully done by Patti!

She looks like a drag queen. For her, this is very restrained but the song requires more sublety.

I agree : / (Not about the drag queen part). This just isn't a song for Patti. It's really more of a diseuse than a chanteuse song.
