  • thanks to Jason Kohn the rest of the world can atest what all of us brazilians alreay knew, Brazil is out of control, violence is everywhere, politicians rape the country freely, we have no shame or guts to start a revolution, we go to the beach and make de best carnaval in the world instead...shoot us!

  • my moment of truth came when i recall Don Corleone talking w/ Michael..."Michael, if i only had time.... I could be a Senator..." and Then Mike respond : We'll get there Papi...

For you Americans... Can you imagine Michael Corleone as a Senator?? Owner of CBS news??? Washington Post??

and you think you have problems.

  • I am American, and let me just say this movie scared the shit out of me. I thought crime was bad here in the United States, but I guess it is just as bad down in places like Rio and San Paulo. It is literally everywhere.

  • Crime in the States? Where?I am from São Paulo (Not San) and I live in the States for more then 5 years. I never saw anything here.

  • Come to my neighborhood in chicago. You would see plenty. We have 400 murders last year. You must be in a rich suburb.

  • Adert...I agree that Chicago it is a little out of scale...but in Brazil we had something like 55.000 murders last year. It is so sad man! Peace!

  • does anyone know where I can buy the movie? I tried futureshop and bestbuy, but it wasn't there.

  • The Brazilian people is great. The Brazilian authorities , polititians are the worst bunch there is. Corruption steals resources from the people , a part of the population resorts to crime, that is fed by corruption (that´s how you get the guns), crime goes (much of it) unpunished and the whole thing escalates. That´s how it is in Brazil nowadays.

And Manda Bala means Shoot'em up. (not the literal Send a Bullet- how? As a birthday present?).

  • naughty.

  • if you wanna watch this movie for free, you should check out my video blog, I have the full movie there, see my profile website

  • Despicable. Has some truth to it. But distorted and depressing!!!!

  • Is there anypl;ace to see the video...I mean, film? Even if only 10 minutes.

  • It's Brazil's own government that has sold the country's resources. Our own "politicos" steal from the overly taxed masses. People like Barbalho cause more damage than the IMF. Social inequality, lack of food, lack of education are the reasons for violence and it is Brazil's government responsibility, no one else's.

The US is not kidnapping people, stealing public money... Brazilians are! They need to be punished! They have no love for their country and its citizens.

  • get a life. talking like that you only degenerates more and more your own people. do you live in brazil or even know how is the life in brazil to say that? "they need to be punished!". shame on you! this is such a unfortunate commentary. looks like you're far away from the reality of YOUR country, your actions, and the rest of the world. read more so you can argue better, my friend.

    peace

  • I guess I wasn't specific with "they", I meant the politicians, not the Brazilian citizens that work hard for nearly nothing; that pay absurd taxes. Our government has the responsibility to protect our country, not to sell it out. When I wrote Brazilians, I meant Brazilian politicians. Guess I better work on my English.

  • I agree that the movie contributes to a more engaged discussion about the cicle that became corruption and violence. But I also believe that this movie (as seen by Jason's interview) has a lot os misunderstandings about brazilian reality. He, as a half-brazilian person, could have had a better sensibility to realize that only a person who lives our daily problems was capable of making this movie. Unfortunally, he made it first.

(The foreigners eyes usually see less than our owns.)

  • To those of you who justly criticize America and its war, remember that Iraq is Bush and Cheney's war, not mine, not Jason's. And there have been literally thousands of books, movies, documentaries, TV shows, criticizing Bush from every angle. And it's been exactly the same for other misconceived American wars, like Vietnam.

  • Here's a homepage that says heaps about the situation in Brazil today... riobodycount com br

  • That's why I think some americans

    Have a great binoculars,but not even a mirror ...

Search for "Iraqi Kid Runs For Water"

  • I'm not criticizing Jason for his interesting and enlightening movie.I criticize a huge amount of americans who think that our country's capital is Buenos Aires and that we share food with monkees in our jungle house. We are the Tarzan boys ! Hey guys wake up !

  • One of the first things you see in "Manda Bala" are the words: "This film cannot be shown in Brazil." There are people here on YouTube calling for a boycott without seeing the film. For the moment it is very easy to boycott. All you have to do is stay in Brazil. I hope that will change and someday people will be able to watch it for themselves and make up their own minds. In the meantime, it's a good thing that it has sparked a dialogue.

  • Jader Barbalho is just one man. If interviewing many Brazilians and hearing what they have to say about him is somehow an attack on the entire country..I don't really understand that.

  • Anyone who watches "Manda Bala" will see that it is about people who are heroic and wonderful—like the plastic surgeon who reconstruct ears, like the brave policemen with bullet wounds all over their bodies and still risk their lives every day trying to protect people; or ordinary people that are just trying to get on with their lives--like a young woman who had her ears cut off in a kidnapping or a businessman who just wants to find a way not to be kidnapped.

  • Probably, this film is part of a beginning plan to demoralize Brazil behind the "Powerful and Super civilized American People" to justify any intervention by the yankees in our territory, how it did in N other countries. The film can be good, but, what a kind of public will watch it? Americans never were good to understand the things with the subtility and nor to leave the countries free. Nothing personal, only using what U.S.A. passed me of them.

  • Which of the two countries is more violent?

For that I know Brazil never "SEND A BOMB" in none another country.

    Flock of ignorants!

I believe that Jason Kohn's confused the

name of the country. Violent it is the USA!

It knows the difference between the

    Brazilians and the Americans?

    The Brazilians have charisma!

What never American none goes to have.

For being a cold and sick people.

  • Well you are a dick, so why would we want to imitate you? I'm glad Brazil has many good people, not crap like you.

  • Just because there are problems in other countries, doesn't mean that a director can't make a movie about a sociological or economic problem in Brazil. It's not like the director is insulting Brazil, he's just making a documentary. Just about every third world country has problems that are due to a combination of corruption & crime, and the actions and exploitation of wealthy countries. Don't accept all the blame for your all problems, but don't cowardly blame JUST the US either.

  • it will be an excelent movie

    i'll see

peolple like Jader Barbalho should be prisioneer

  • we need to stop beeing stupid and look at ourselves, like americans need to do with their stupid president...

i think im gonna love this movie

  • im a brazillian, and all i can say is: americans, europeans, asians(and whatever) have their owns problems. and brazil have his own problems too. some (just some) of these problems were caused by us, uk, portugal, but these problems had been servant, kept and perpetuated for we ourselves. our police and politicians are corrupt? our media (i mean globo) sux? our outlaws are more organized than our politic parties? yes, and we are guilty of that.

  • Before talk about our problems you should look at our country's history...

  • That's why I think everyone should clean your own house.

You should know Brazil history before talk about Brazil problems . . .

  • Hey nomorepass

Have you forgot that the alcoholic who blames alcohol for his problems said tha Michael Moore is perverted and a anti-patriotic one ?

  • Sounds like a simplistic approach to a profound problem, nonetheless any effort that can be used to intensify the "struggle against corruption" is welcome here in Brazil.

  • usa have 3 times the percentage of the population of criminals than brazil. why cant we see movies showing this???

this way i am getting very angr about the small brain of the common brazilian people

  • LQB - It's very typical of Brazilians to blame all the bad things on others. We keep denying that we have only OURSELVES to blame.

Like an alcoholic who blames alcohol for his problems, we refuse to see our own role in the process. As long as that continues to be so, things will never change.

Germany, Japan, China, South Korea and many other nations have put together the willingness to overcome problems much worse than we have in Brazil today. Can we?

  • The economical politics brougth by the US and supported by the IMF, is the main cause of violence in Brasil. These financial politics caused many crisys in all Latinamerica during the 80's and 90's. The Neoliberal ideology bankrupted the continent, putting millions in poverty. The wild US capitalism brought the wave of violence to Brasil during this period.

US exports violence trought out the world, killing inocent people all around the globe for oil and more money...

    Shame on you!!!

  • fsdfsdfsd

  • There is no corruption and violence in US...

There is no corruption and violence everywhere else in the world...

    Only in Brazil...

  • I agree with a lot of people here, principally Brazilians, when they say that Brazil is a country with too much corruption and violence. However, I know that is a lot of sensationalism in every media, like movies, and I have to say that is horrible to think that an north-american director (which, by the way, is son of brazilian parents) is showing OUR reality to the world when, in his country, neither 1/3 of the people know about global warming — a problem that must be seen with worrying.

  • The history of corruption from Jader Barbalio is just ONE, who lives here knows how much it happens everyday. It seems ppl here agree with all that corruption, it´s very strange and hard to believe how ppl concerns to that.

This guy could make movies about corruption in Brazil untill the end of his life and still wouldnt cover half of the political scandals in Brazil.

  • I'm Brazilian, from Brasilia.

as "LOBOEXTREME" sad, Brazilian people are hipocrites!

We have to congratulate this AMERICAN MAN who are open some eyes in my contry!

  • "fucking yankees, these stupid "gringos", come to our country": actually, LBQ, Although any Brazilian would perfectly misspell it as "hipocrite", NO BRAZILIAN IN THE WORLD would misspell that word as "hipocrate". Only an American would. You ain't fooling anybody.

  • Excuse me... CORRECTION ==== KIDNAPPED instead of hijacked

  • TOTALLY AGREED. I'M A BRAZILIAN WHO MOVED OUT OF BRAZIL. My family had been hijacked, 2 relatives murdered, electrical fence and dobbermans in my house, cameras... you name it... corruption and criminals dominate Brazil... Tourists... avoid Brazil as much as you can...

  • Más situações podem ocorrer em qualquer lugar do mundo.

Lamentável que ocorreu à vc, mas sensasionalismo nunca arrumou nada.

  • bla bla bla

  • It is amazing to see these fucking yankees, these stupid "gringos", come to our country and make a documentary about a reality he doesn't live in his daily life or even understand.

I suggest him to go to Iraq to film the real violence, promoted by the so called "civilized" countries of the world.

The truth is that US and UK are the most savages countries in the planet, promoting state terrorism around the globe...

Go fuck your selves, you fucking hipocrates!!!

  • Brazilian people hipocrites

  • bom dia arlifrancis,

Well, this movie just won a big award at Sundance so hopefully we will all be seeing it on DVD or at the theaters within 4-5 months!! ( i dont know if that is accurate or not)

  • Brazilian, born and living in Sao Paulo. I really want to see this movie. Underlying theme of social complexity.

  • Also can I say that I hope Jason and his producer are smart enough to upload (a) a trailer, and (b) between 5 and 15 minutes of his movie onto youtube and their Mandabala website...building hype and giving people a taste of the movie can't hurt :)

  • I CAN'T WAIT to see this movie. your enthusiasm (and his enthusiasm even more so) is totally contagious, and so I think this should be a great flick.

I will say...I didn't listen to the entire interview because you started talking about plot details (even just superficially) and this ruins a movie for me. Please can't you discuss the movie without discussing it's plot? Talk about its theme and style and camera angles for 10:19 if you have to, but don't tell me what happens in it.

  • Believe me, the stuff I spoke to Jason about is set up very early in the film.

  • Ok, fair enough :)
