Those boots are about 25years old and it's 100% normal that they failed in that way. All kinds of polyhuretane base plastics have a limited life which is calculated in approximately 10 years from the production date. It doesn't matter if the boots are used or not.
Every year those plastics have some kind of crystalization process going on so they become harder and more fragile especially to thermal shock.
it's very common to have a failure that kind especially during the first ski day after a long brake without using them.
An advise for every person which take care of his health watching this video: CHANGE YOUR SKI BOOTS EVERY 10 YEARS if you use them rarely EVERY 5 YEARS if you use them intensively.
