At first I was thinkin this idea was stupid, then I tryed it. There is no way that making cuts into the pellet can ruin your barrel as lead is softer than the steel in your barrel, meaning it cant scratch any new grooves. When I tryed this Idea and tested it into clay I got the same results you did, huge expansion. Great vid BTW
Too many hollow point pellets doesn't expand. As a kid I used to fire the pellets reverse (skirt first) with very good effect. I even glued a short thin-walled lead tube to a wadcutter pellet with good results too. Finally I'd form some pellets made of candle wax mixed with lead particles - not very accurate, but good.
there's no doubt that those pellets will expand more, but it's really hard to get get the cuts "centered" thus making the flight of the pellet quite unstable. just take the easier step for high expansion... get yourself some Crosman Destroyers! they have all the stopping power you need!!!! the Beeman coated hollow points are great as well!
@007tallguy I'm not really a big fan of Crosman destroyers as the cup is too small and shatters or separates from the main body of the pellet rather than mushrooming on impact, when this happens the force isn't fully transferred. However I recently purchased a tin of Crosman destroyer EX pellets which have a larger cup which looks stronger, however I'm still worried about the same issue presenting itself. I need to run some tests.
i have a box of them to, your right you have to cut them to make them expand. crosman forgot to drill bigger hole and possibly they never tested them for the market.
@AmazingKnifeThrower Hollow points don't actually explode, its the hydraulic force of the liquid that causes the hollow tip to expand and release its energy into the tissue. In this sense yes these do react just like hollow tip bullets, however the reaction is on a much smaller scale.
i do this to my .22lr bullets except i use a small phillips screw driver to make the x in the hollow point it expands so much that it wont exit a 2x4 when u shoot it. the screw driver make a more consistent x in the tip for better accuracy and the slits actually go inside the hollow point when u use a screw driver. they blow a squirrel nearly in half. the energy deposit is great if you do that.
@banjoboyjohn hmm, i never thought of that, however i don't think a philips would work for my pellets maybe a screwdriver from an eyeglass kit, i may have to look ito that.
why cut em like that they dont even fit in the barrel then. by the way premier pellets are good shit i use the domes the pointeds and the hollows. never used wadcutters from them even though wads are my favourite. but good for taking aout satellite dishes around my house.
@killratoss well u gotta make sure not to cut down too far. ive never had a problem with my pellets not fitting in my barrel or any issues with blow-by
i preff to just use a pointed lead pellet because they'll pierce right threw and if it hits bone and dosent break threw it the skirt plumes and causes hollowpoint dammage but if your hollowpoint or nothing then take a pointed and drill a thin hole in the middle (not a cone like these) then carve the x it has better penetration accuracy and the plume dosent break as easily as these and ends up more like a screw driver head and overall does more damage
.480 Ruger "Speer Gold dot" Ammunition has similar cuts etched into the head of the round itself.
I've done it alot on various pellets trying to make larger exit holes.
The skirt is what "seals" the pellet. Taking a Co2 and using the back of the canister to seat the pellet works excellent vs using your finger to fit it in.
The "head" is the actual round itself and its shape, weight and diameter are what determines its specific charaterisics.
yeah, im using a springer though. u can actually buy a pellet seater made by beeman that supposedly works rather well but i havent used it personally and dont think i need it yet.
No, spend like $40 more dollars, and get a Crosman Phanton, MUCH BETTER, it's like $89.99 at pyramid air. I was planning on posting a hunting video with it.
not sure what dela just said...my 880 lasted two years of incredibly hard use/abuse, like maybe a hundred shots every day and being left in rain, and its more accurate then my dads savage 22. i took down a raccoon with it easy. but of course my 10/22 beats them all.
im not sure, try one and if it doesnt seat without having to be forced then u should be fine. just dont force it as i dont want to be responsible for u jamming ur rifle. take it easy.
yes the tissue damage and damage to vital organs through "hydraulic shock"* which will bring down an animal faster because there is more energy being transferred (knockdown power)
shooting water is pretty good when you want to see expansion, as its caused by hydraulic shock and much much cheaper than plumbers putty. i like homemade ballistics gel because it shows penetration and expansion of the hollow-point pellet and its unnecessary to remold it like plumbers putty.
Balistics gel can only be used a number of times before it degrades, it must be used at a certain temperature, it rots, you have to wait like what 12 hours for it to reset...ive been using my same tub for years, it takes 2 seconds to remold.....balistics gel it does show pellet expansion, it does show penetration but it does not show cavity, that is what you want to know.
i agree with you on that, if you want to see the cavity or if you just want to see something cool. but my argument was if you just want to see how much the pellet expands you can just go with a simple 2 liter filled with water.
not so, wad cutters are actually better in my experience for rodents, or other things where you do not need to penetrate feathers, the flat head really punches through skulls and organs, pointed pellets can zip right through...
i love to cause shit lol. have you tried the gamo gold plated pellets, they are supposed to increase velocity in your airgun, unfortunately in my airgun they go supersonic and become very inaccurate.
lol naw, Gamo PBA pellets are shit, and apparently destroy your rifling.
I only buy the cheap bulk pellets, they get the job done, from paper punching to rabbit piercing.
I actually sold all my .177's, I need to get a cheap chinese one for general fuckin around, .22's are SO much more expensive, with such a smaller selection...
recently there have been more .22's coming out. the weird thing is it seems only the good rifles are coming out in .22, so that helps. an RWS 34 is a bit pricy at 200 dollars but is well worth it. a Tech Force Contender 89 is also a great buy. but they need good quality pellets to shoot accurately. with either gun, you can expect quarter-inch groups at 20 yards with the right pellet and right hold technique. RWS and Beeman have some good .22's. Beeman a little less so since they're pricy.
I shot these pellets into home-made ballistics gel, and I have no doubt that they would expand with any critter. I personally took a crow from 50-65 yds in one shot, it was a through and through shot and i never recovered the pellet, but the quarter dime sized hole in the other side of the bird was proof enough for me.
its hard for me to say, I'm shooting at around 1000fps you could try firing through a 2liter bottle filled with water (lengthwise) and see if you can get any results from that.
If doing this will cause any damage to your gun, I must have been very lucky. I couldn't begin to guess how many pellets that have been Xed went through my gun, and the worst that ever happened was a few small cuts. I'd have to see the damage, before I could accept that doing this caused any damage.
I have never damaged my gun doing this, and i see no difference in accuracy, the only difference i see is faster more humane kills. those pellets on my vid demonstrate how much better they mushroom. also when i was doing testing on gelatin i noticed a lot more knockdown power.
haha that's great, I've been doing this since I've been 9, which is over 11 years and i have yet to have ANY ONE out of probably 100 tins break/explode or any of this other shit that people say.... What most of these people don't know is that people do this to regular bullets, and those are getting shot out at hell of a lot more pressure then an air gun, and nothing happens to them, so what the hell would go wrong in an air gun? some people are idiots...
for sportbikeandhunter-well handgun bullets don't have the little flare at the end, and the air gun pellets are thinner+they are overall structurally weaker. a good rws or a gamo can put a pellet over 1300 fps, putting a lot of pressure behind it. but anyway i tried this out and it worked fine, i think if you press to hard, you will squash the bottom of the flare, causing the pellet to not fit right, jamming your $50 daisy rat gun or your $200 gamo rabbit gun.
Ok. My Challenge is for anyone to find proof that if this is done properly, it will ruin your gun. instead of just letting the shit spill from your head and on to your keyboard like a moron with no facts to back your claim.
how about the fact that I already tried this and it already screwed up my gun, but I suppose the FACT that I have personal experience isn't good enough.
