Kotomine Kirie: Not a villain but an evil person. Not inhuman but deviant. Not insane but also not sane. The biggest enemy in Fate saga, the final boss in fate/stay night (Saber route and Sakura route) and Zero. If Archer is a light embossing of Shirou's defects, then Kotomine could be said to be the wall exposing those defects by darkness. Like Shirou, a void human being.
I disagree. Yes, the acts that Kirie committed were indeed those that can be considered evil, but Kirie himself is not an evil person.
Kirie's fundamental issue lies with both rejection and acceptance, both in terms of society and himself. I believe that, as an individual, he was always far too concerned with the ways of the world and not enough with his own person to come to any definitive conclusions, thus why he questioned himself more than anyone else.
sigh, i really wanted to love Kotomine he had everything i like in a villain: good theme music, twisted sense of the world and is a giant douche which i admire in a person. but I just couldn't. as soon as he popped up i said "well look at that a main villain, i'll bet he will pretend to be on our side while secretly betraying me."
@1337penguinking That's part of the appeal. He's completely obvious, Tousaka calls him a fake priest, blah blah blah. His character just makes sense in that role, and is awesome because of it.
Ah yes, Kotomine Kirei, the character that is incapable of entering or leaving a scene without mind****ing you with at least a dozen pages of dialogue.
Kotomine...such a tragic character. He's a person that tried infinitely hard to do good, but was just born a sociopath, with nothing he could do about it. If not for that, he'd probably be one of the most pure good characters in the story.
It really says a lot about the writing that even when a character is a monstrous bastard and you spend two full routes hating his guts, the last one makes him completely sympathetic.
Kotomine's pretty cool, a lot cooler villain that Matou Shinji. Shinji deserves to be shot, repeatedly. Gotta say though, Kotomine gained a lot of my respect when eating that spicy tofu; made me wanna eat spicy tofu.
@GTL990 The tofu eating scene was hilarious. After the horrible atrocities he had committed in the other paths the Heavens feel route gives us this. :p
Yeah, this sound track fit kotomine real well. Of course kotomine wasn't satisfied with man kinds so called "happiness", and thus he said that this happiness didn't bring him any joy at all, that's why on the heavens feel route at all kotomine didn't feel any guilt within himself.
I personally didn't understand anything Kirie said, maybe it's due to bad translations or something but most of the characters when they were trying to sound wise ended up sounding like they were on drugs
Kirei said that humans are superior to angels because they know of the existance of evil, yet have the possibility to fight it and not become evil. Where angels only know good from the start and have never shown any other emotion. Also, murder is not an absolute evil from the start, angra did not understand what he was doing and by his unique perspective it was not evil, so the priest had no right to stop his birth over such an unjustified killing. Stuff like that.
Personally he's one of my most favorite characters. No matter how twisted his logic is it makes sense because his logic is based on how the world works, so when he says something evil, its not really him thats evil its the whole world. Makes him really sound like a false prophet. Nasu-sensei did a really good job with his character,
I disagree on the premise that it's neither Kirie nor the world at large that's evil, but it's Kirie overly conscious attitude towards it that might make it seem as such.
You're correct with respect to his logic, but one of Kirie's fundamental problems is that he could never love himself as a person. Believing himself to have some inherent flaw, one could argue that Kirie depended on others in order to validate his existence in not so different a way than Shirou.
@RyanAshlight I disagree. Kirei himself acknowledged there was something very wrong in him. He almost perfectly mastered many skills, but abandoned them on the brink of completion because it gave him no joy. He took pleasure in evil and the suffering of others, even those closest to him, yet still had a conscience. He was born twisted. It's not his fault, of course. It was just the caprice of fate.
Your argument is valid based solely on the preconception on that what Kirei takes pleasure in is in fact evil. That's precisely what I mean by Kirei's mistake in that he holds too much value in others' opinions.
Kirei's fundamental flaw isn't that he takes pleasure in the suffering of others, but that he allowed himself to be swayed into thinking he was a twisted individual, when in fact he's merely at odds with the majority around him.
Perception is everything here, and when you think about it, Kirei was just in the wrong line of work. If he had taken up a mantel similar to a Magus Killer like Kiritsugu - with his skills, he probably would've excelled at it above most anyone.
IMHO, it was his relentless persistence in trying to conform to society's expectations that caused him the most suffering.
@RyanAshlight Kotomine acknowledges he enjoyed the suffering of his wife and child. There's even more related to what actually brings him pleasure in the Fate/Zero novels. Born in Darkness, living in Darkness,
What you knew as happiness,
he knew only as hate,
his only respite looking forward,
his only hope knowing himself.
