@steven0seagul At the end of part 2, Elliot Spencers soul was freed when Dr. Channard killed him. Spencer's reversion to his human form caused the negative attributes of himself (his evil) to manifest into an independent entity, and hides in the pillar. In pt. 3, it again uses the form of Pinhead. Without human influence, Pinhead is unbound by the laws of the Cenobite Hell, and engages in an indiscriminate killing spree on Earth, transforming some of his victims into a Cenobite army.

@steven0seagul As for the others, there's no real explanation why they never returned. Perhaps they were expendable. Though, If Elliots soul was sent to his own personal hell after being freed, I'm sure the same goes for the others. Which kinda sucks for Chatterer, the soul used for him was just a kid. looked no more that 13 or 14.

Here's an interesting little tidbit or trivia. The music/sound man was a christian and inserted the word "God" in morsecode, the loud horns blowing when you first see leviathan are spelling it out in morseciode. Hew anted to establish the presence of God. He probably never thought about the fact that that morse code spelling God could also be taken as saying that Leviathan is God.

This factoid is included in the extras{as well as commentary} on the dvd release.

I would guess if you somehow destroyed the box for good you would essentially destroy Leviathain being as it basically controls the box. Im guessing thats why Pinhead's so protective of it and wants it so badly. Unless Leviathin is something totally different what would happen if you managed to destroy the box?

leviathan is actually more of a artificial intelligence sort of being. most people think that it is evil because of what it does. certainly it is evil; rotten to the core but it commits these acts not out of a sadistic determination to cause pain & suffering to everything it encounters but rather to study & analyze them. at least that's my take on the subject...

it seems to me that whenever an individual enters it's domain, leviathan bombards them with visual images from their past using the black light. these images tend to remind the individual of the worst things they have done, be it big or small. (cont'd)

Its not a very complex idea overall though, solve a puzzle to get into hell solve one to get out, the livathan never seems to be a devil as such more the centre of hell, i mean it never speaks or really does anything, its more like a power core, and in hellraiser hell is another dimention, so technically liviathan is not the devil but a extension of the devils power, its complicated.

Leviathan is meant to be the equivalent of the Devil, or Satan, in the Hellraiser mythos. It's the god of hell. And yes, Leviathan does things. It released Julia from hell to find it souls, and it turned Leviathan into a cenobite and attached that tentacle to his head.
