Bird ban proposal in Missouri..help it stop!!

To those of you that believe we were put here to "plunder" the earth, take a good look around. Hookbills were here before us and will outlive us on this planet. We as humans have taken over or destroyed natural habitats to the point of near extinction. I agree we should allow the free to remain free!!!!! But what about the birds that are already here? Just destroy them? I think not... As for the blackmarket trade, look closely at the laws and statistics before you post.

So did this pass? They tried to do the same thing here in Maine with birds and fish. This would have never been an issue if it wasn't for all the irresponsible pet owners releasing birds, snakes, fish etc. into the wild to compete with the natural species.

What makes you think birds were born to be your companion? Selfish! They have each other as companions in the wild! They should be allowed to fly if they have wings. They should be allowed to not be subject to private ownership that allows for animal abuse and neglect to go undetected in far more cases than is exposed. Parrots live for far longer than humans. Don't provide for them in your will, let them have their own will. No sympathy for selfish humans, this video is bullshit.

You're right, but every single bird in that video is readily available by breeders here in the US. There is no need for poaching or smuggling here in this country. Agreed that bird mills should be taken care of, but so should puppy mills, and every other type of animal 'mill'.. That said, banning them outright is not the way to do it.

In the begining that may have been true, but I feel that the expansion of people into there natural habbitats is a far larger threat on the wild front then the pet trade, now the tables have turned a bit, and I agree that the capture of parrots is wrong and should be dealt with.

But that isn't the piont of this vidio, there are more than enough domestic bred birds to meet the demand, and in the end are what will save them for future generations, there should be legisltion but not an owner ban.

Nito, this is direct from the BC SPCA:

"The BC SPCA is not leading a ban on exotic animals. But it is pushing for a clear definition of the term "wildlife" within the confines of the BC Wildlife Act because without such an amendment, lions, tigers, primates and venomous reptiles and invertebrates will remain legally domestic animals in BC."

So it's not for those people who own birds (responsibly, of course). Thanks for the video though.

Yeah. They're not going to stop at just those animals if it passes. Also, the view you have towards those exotics (thinking that they shouldn't be pets) is that same view that these people have towards birds.

IMO, people should be allowed to keep any non-endangered animal as long as they can care for it properly.

*That* I can agree with Flee. And I know that where I live, there are mandatory licenses for cats and dogs. Maybe there could be something similar for avians, where an owner would be responsible for showing that a fully qualified veteranarian has done a yearly check-up on the bird. I know that the ASPCA helps out people who can't afford things like dog grooming, so that's a way around that. Your thoughts?

I agree to certain point in either opinions. I belive people should not "own" them becuase of their selfishness, keeping in the cage, clipping thier wings, etc.. as long as one thinks of them (or any animal) a "pet" I bilive we have no right to keep them in captivity.

They are not human toys, they are precious as much as other beings on earth.

I have my baby bird too, I do feel sad sometimes to see him looking outside, vast sky he could never fly into.

by the way, i'm sure people who already have "wild" birds would be grandfathered to be able to keep them but not breed them. nobody's going to be forced to release their tropical parrot into the winter night. I think it would help to prevent future captivity of wild birds to breed as pets, but for the ones already dependent on humans, to release them into the wild would be utterly inhumane.

Apparently you've never had the chance to be friends with a parrot.. Wolves wouldn't CHOOSE to be with us, neither would Tigers or Lions..

Birds who are free deserve to be free. Birds bred in captivity look at humans as their caregiver and mother. We shouldn't take that away from them. I love my parrots to pieces and they love me.

what's sad is that if this does pass, most of those captive bred birds wouldn't know how to survive in the wild..they depend on humans and they see humans as their flock, what is supposed to be done with them, are they just gonna be thrown outside and expected to adapt or die?

I'd LOVE to see an end to Captive Bird-TOYS. The larger species in particular deserve more than anyone can give them as pets. They NEED non-stop companionship of hundreds of other BIRDS. They NEED diets that we can't give them. They NEED space to fly (even our largest house is a cage to them). They need an environment free of the toxins normally found in homes. The average bird arrives at the refuge less than TEN years after being sold!

Thanks. I have not heard anything updated about it and hopefully the next I hear, will be that it did not pass. Not only are they trying to pass it in Missouri, but in B.C. Canada aswell. I pray for all those who have to deal with this now, and hope it never happens. I'm also 26.

I agree. I do not in the leaset agree with captureing wild birds for the pet trade, because there are more then enough in captivity now, there is no need for that.... but I don't beleive that banning them altogether as pets is reasonable at all. If they are banned, no honest loving person will be able to breed them for pets, and thus leaving all the shit head bad people left to keep catching wild ones and mass producing.

I'm from Iowa but I feel the pain. This idea is absurd. Birds are wonderful companions.
