  • Skip the music, and use closeup views

  • what sort of cable are you using?

Does standard TV coax do the trick?

  • Good video but your big hands were in the way most of the time.

  • Where can I find this 'sauter'? Can't I just use solder like everyone else?

  • Buffoon. This is a really daft method. Go away!

  • @Emelie99 You can get away without soldering them on very low power applications but it's best to just do it and save yourself a headache from swr issues later.

  • Dont kno what u mean by cut at 2nd ridge??You said by holes on ur other vid....which one is it??

  • do u show how to change a magnetic cable

  • Now try doing that on field day in a gale and driving rain,in the dark.

  • @gibbonspider Why would you have to do this on Field Day/ You should be ready!

  • The dielectric comes off fairly easy with one more little step. take your razor knife and cut length wise, then pull it with you pliers, really fast. I also use a little flux when soldering, makes the flow lots better and insures a great connection.

  • IS THIS A JOKE ????

  • Wire strippers?

  • Can you show me how to solder a PL-259 or SO 239 to a 450 ohm ladderline? Twin feedline. I'm building a 40 thru 10 meter dipole from a Alpha delta DX-40 (40 meter dipole). This antenna has a SO239 on the center conductor. I need to change the center conductor to allow for the twin feedline but have to put a SO239 on the other end to attach to the coax to the shack and I don't know how to attach a SO239 or PL259 to a twin feedline.

  • If TenTec manufactures its equipment as it rides like this connector is better to be devoted to the plumbing.

  • Tinning the braid also helps when soldering through the holes, makes for a better contack and will last for years, especially when it is attached to an antenna 50 ft.or more high.73,Don,VO1XH

  • Very good. But next time you do a video would you take your shots from the front? Your video and audio quality are good, but it is hard to see what you are doing from this angle. Thanks.

  • Thanks for the comments. Installing connectors with this method does not melt or damage the dielectric. Folding the braid back in lieu of soldering the connector does not provide a solid electrical connection.

  • i have some questions to make.

    1) As mentioned below your heating the connector for over a minute. Wont this damage the dielectric ? How many watts is the solder iron?

    2) What about folding the braid instead of soldering it? Isn't it better?

    Thanks.

  • Well Done on the video

Sometimes its good to go back to basic.

    Thanks for the video.

  • I've never been sure if soldering to the braid, as opposed to folding the braid back over the outer and screwing the plug on tight is worth the effort with PL259s, considering how poor the connection from plug outer to socket outer is anyway. It's not a connection you'd trust for a mains electricity safety ground, not a solid electrical bond at all, and no amount of solder will change that.

  • Same method, same connector for RG8U in case anyone wanted to know.

  • This technique looks dangerous and coax-destroying! Notice how he leaves the blade on his combo cutter/vise out while in the vice mode? And he's heating the connector for 1 minute, 20 seconds--surely long enough to damage the dielectric. He's using the wrong tools, and his soldering gun is underpowered for this job.

  • @PetesGuide Then show us your method! Those can do those can't complain about those who can!!!

  • this guy is a lot complicated. someone help him to cut the cable!!!

  • I'd like to see a demo with one of those mini torches, like when outside away from the bench. Never did it!

I suggest using silver/teflon PL259s, only the best for TenTec rigs.

  • Nice job,one of the first things a ham has to do whether a mobile antenna or a h.f. dipole, proper installation of a PL259 connector.Always test for shorts with an ohm meter and wiggle the cable around just to make sure that when the cable flexes the connection remains intact.73,Don VO1XH

  • what if i dont solder the tip and the back of the connector? Im installing a boat antenna that has PL259 but i dont have hardware for soldering and the cable its located in a difficult part of the boat. thanks

  • Very important to solder all r.f.connectors,especially in a marine environment and seal the exposed connections with a good quality sealant. Coax Seal tape is available through ham radio suppliers and makes for a very reliable seal against moisture. If you dont solder and seal properly, salt water will corrode the connections in no time which could very well mean life or death if you have to call for help at sea.Hope this helps,73,Don,VO1XH

  • Awesome PL-259->RG-213 Installation Video!

    Take Care,

    John

  • Good video...I watched the RG8 video as well and both methods look very similar. Why could't you use one of the methods for either cable? This is with respect to the way the braid is installed/soldered.

  • Dude that desk is WAY too clean! Mine looks like a junk pile!

  • A great idea Scott to show people how to install connector. In fact, we posted your ideos on our club site, the AERO Amateur Radio club. Thanks

  • Great Video! A+ thanks,

  • Hello Scott,

If you wipe the iron tip on the way OUT of the holder, and be certain to leave solder on the tip when "parking" the iron, the tip will last a lot longer.

  • Nice job Scott. You didn't mention the wattage of the soldering iron you were using. I find it takes at least a 100W iron to heat the coax body fast enough to be effective.

  • It's not the wattage of the iron but the mass of the tip that makes the difference. I use a Hakko 456 60W with the large mass tip and it heats a PL-259 almost instantly.

  • Some good tips.
