Actually it's verbal irony. while trying to describe what is poetic, Fry claims that Robert Graves thinks speech should be direct and concise. It's ironic because he uses two words that mean the same thing, tautology and pleonastic, which mean "using different words to define the same thing.
Irony can be defined as an action contrary to its intended effect. Fry was complementing Robert Graves' form of speech and did so by contradicting what Graves said was poetic......
I agree with them.... Looking in at our world, 'fuck' wouldn't be nearly as bad as saying 'torture', what with it's meaning. It's kind of like... if I was introduced to Coke and Pepsi and such now, I wouldn't get near it because of the color of the drink.
@MistaMase102 they blanked out the swearing because its US television, for some reason US television everything that people may take the slightest offence to they sensor out, I've noticed that on UK telly they don't really sensor out anything a tall apart from "cunt" every now and then. which is why I prefer to watch UK television.
This is the first time I have seen Craig have a similar "snake" mug for his guest. Normally, Craig drinks from the snake mug and the guest gets a regular mug, which shows, in a small part, the respect he wished to offer to Stephen Fry.
Thank you for posting this. I saw this when it aired and made me cry. It is one of few examples of american television being inspirational. Really thanks again for putting this up.
It's like the "old" interviews in the seventies. one to one hour long talk show. most importantly with interesting people who are not selling anything. even the most dull so called celeb would be a thousand times more interesting if they were asked to talk about their experiences rather than simply the latest film they are in which, incidentally, i suspect, no one cares about. there is definitely room for both types of shows both in the US and UK. In fact, the UK has no talk shows anymore
its truly amazing to hear these two sit down and discuss ideas rather than people and events. Its thought provoking which in modern media is extremely rare, even more so in late night.
"It's tautological, it's pleonastic."
What an ironic statement.

...did they just intellectualise pornography? This is why I love Stephen Fry. It's also one of the best interviews I've seen in a long, long time.

As usual Fry is charming and delightful to listen to. First time I've ever seen Criag Ferguson. He seems like a good guy.

Ferguson keeps commenting on how he 'forgets' he's doing a television show.
I cannot believe how true this actually is. That jolt of excitement he got when talking about cocaine - he completely forgot where he was.
Cannot thank you enough for posting this. It is truely amazing. Bare, frank, raw conversation on important topics. Television at its best.

I'm guessing you're from the USA? Maybe you should think about moving abroad, you are bound to find more shows/interviews of this caliber.

Intelligent Brits on a chat show on US TV!!! What`s going on?
No wonder they couldn`t get an audience ;-)
