On the IUCN Redlist page for this species, I read: "Although there is no accepted estimate of current abundance, the population size is clearly in the hundreds of thousands."

@isanatori if what you say about minke whale population is correct, from 760,000 to 300,000 then it is more likely than not that the minke whales are an endangered species based on population reduction and thus it would be totally illegal to hunt them. my guess for this dramatic decline in population is that the japanese people cannot stop munching on whales and find an alternative source of food. fact: whales contain high amounts of mercury and can lead to mercury poisoning from overconsumption

They had lower estimates based on the 3rd circumpolar survey, but it has never been said that Antarctic minke whales populations had halved or decreased. Maybe the 760,000 was too high, but to think that about 10,000 minke whales caught by Japan for research since 1988 may have been the cause for such a decline is erroneous.
Minke whale meat is perfectly healthy.

I've thought about going whaling. They're just animals like we eat today. Hunting exotics is a true sport. I've been all over the world. My bull elephant and 2 lions are my prized possessions. I've even bagged a Père David's Deer, which is extinct in the wild. Most money from exotic hunts goes to conservation efforts though.

That was awesome. It seems to me, though, that both sides are wrong, and both sides are "right." It's a tough issue. I'm rooting for the Seashepard anyway. The killing of whales is the core criminal act, so the Seashepard is a crime fighter, of sorts...I think...I'm not sure.

The Steve Irwin and her crew are pirates, plain and simple. Their captain is the worst kind of man. A simpleton and a terrorist. Nothing would please me more than to see the Yushin Maru sink the the Steve Irwin to the bottom of the sea. All hand lost.

The whalers are violent butchers without humanity! The Sea Shepards are heroes! Those monsters who call themselves scientists are the terrorists. Their captain is the worst kind of man! I know all that they have done and it makes me physicaly ill. All whaling ships and their crews deserve to be sent to the bottom! No survivors! Then they can rot and burn in hell were trash like them belong! I would savor the sight of that.

@mandofrommando Really? The last time i checked they were ramming the Japanese Vessels which is piracy! Their use of acid, arrows, prop foulers, and etc. are just acts of piracy and are illegal. Whaling isnt illegal so long as it's for reaserch, which they are doing.You call the Japanese terrorists, look at Paul and his group of misfit potheads. Honestly, it shouldn't take that long to prove that whales eat a lot of fish. I'm not making this up.
