On this date in 1956 {Mar. 3rd} "Blue Suede Shoes" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peaked at #2 {for 4 weeks} & spent 21 weeks in the Top 100...
Ranked 18th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1956 chart...
Also in 1956 it was covered by Elvis Presley {#20} and Boyd Bennett and his Rockers {#63}...
In 1973 Johnny River's version reached #38...
Entered the Top 100 on the exact same day as "Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis...
At the risk of being offensive, there really isn't much difference between the Perkins and Presley versions.
The emphasis shifted between the two versions, but both of them are great performances. Saying that one sucks and the other is the greatest musical performance of all time is really stretching things.
ROCKABILLY IN ITS PUREST FORM: The Late Carl Perkins of Jackson, TN was often overshadowed by his contemporaries Elvis, Roy and Jerry Lee. But this sound is the way it was and the way it was supposed to be... scratchy record grooves and all. Dont ever digitally remaster THAT sound.
I like this and God love Carl, but where this kinda clomps along, Elvis tears it to shreds. This is Rockabilly which Elvis had already done plenty at Sun, but Elvis' version of this at RCA is full throttle Rock & Roll.
I'M SORRY FOR ALL THE POSTS.... THIS IS NOT TO PROMOTE ELVIS...PERKINS WAS A FANTASTIC TALENT. IT IS TO EDUCATE.... IF YOU DON'T WHERE YOU'VE BEEN... YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING. IT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE:

Elvis revolutionized music with Rockabilly. He had relatively little success with R&B songs (later named RocknRoll music in 1951) Only 5 out of his 31 #1 hits were of R&B origin (written or previously recorded by blacks). Elvis married black and white music and this was the music that massively appealed to people blk and wht. He legitimized both black music & hillbilly country in the process
"None of us would have made it without Elvis"-Buddy Holly (hillbilly)
This one of the few records by a redneck cracker i ever liked. This was during a period when Afrikan amerikkans were being murdered by people who looked like Carl Perkins.
@Screamingdk Rockabilly was a fusion of country and R&B. Elvis was the one who made it a REAL authentic fusion, not country music with an R&B flavor. He revolutionized music for this reason. You can see that Perkins is trying to pull of the genre fusion Elvis created in 1954...but the country boy and style still dominate. Elvis was different. A different breed. Elvis genre fusion is what excited the world and started a music revolution.
@TrueLight55 Carl Perkins is considered by most music historians to be the truest of the rockabilly artists. Elvis just wanted to be famous, and was doing whatever Sam Phillips wanted... which was to find a young white male to sing RnB tunes in order to make a lot of money... Carl Perkins was making music like this before Elvis even started, however he did not record any until after Elvis had already been on the radio.
@cmilkes Nope. Leading scholars know EP was THE Rockabilly pioneer. Carl Perkins was Country Rockabilly. You see, Rockabilly is a blend of hillbilly country & R&B. But before EP "Rockabilly" wasn't a grand fusion of the genres it was hillbilly country with R&B flavor. You can easily peg Perkins a white country singer--no question there. EP literally fused the genres creating an amazing new music/sound. A big dose of gospel further energized the sound. Ask leading scholars. EVERYONE emulated him.
@Screamingdk Most whites didn't like black music R&B (later renamed RocknRoll 1951). Haley sang some R&B songs & stripped out all traces of black music which was why it appealed to whites. EP was THE FIRST to marry black and white music (authentic not white-washed R&B) with hillbilly (white) country music. He did so because he embraced all music, he honored and celebrated the black sound and feel in his music, in turn shining a light on black music and "legitimizing" it for whites. Rockabilly.
@TheOcon23 This came out in 1955. The truth is that Elvis had already recorded the groundbreaking that's Alright Mama, and a slew of country songs in his cutting edge Rockailly style that was causing a sensation. Everyone was following EP around...watching him for the back of a pick up in the South. He was THE MAN. The Hillbilly Cat. Johnny Cash, Cark Perkins, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison...all say they watched (and learned!) The Hillbilly Cat from the back of a pick up. E was THE revolutionary.
My eyes might be a bit boggled and ancient (plus that laser treatment didn't help at all... I can cut through solid steel with a single glance but i'm still short sighted)... but does this label say: BLUE SUEDE SHOES (Parkins) CARL PERKINS? Who the Hell is Parkins?
For heaven's sake don't use any software to reduce the background noise. It seems to be inherent in a lot of US 45 rpm records, and it doesn't detract from the magic one iota. Just get on with listening to the music!
Can I recommend using some software that can get rid of the background hum? Unless you're one of those people who prefers their records with that hum...If so, rock on....But if you're not, I use a great free program called Audacity that works wonders on that hum. It won't get rid of it entirely, but it reduces it to where it's harder to notice. So yeah, look that up if you want.
