  • On being alone in the universe consider excerpts of Spirits of the Dead (1827) by Edgar Allan Poe Be silent in that solitude, Which is not loneliness-for then The spirits of the dead, who stood In life before thee, are again In death around thee, and their will Shall overshadow thee; be still. The breeze, the breath of God, is still, And the mist upon the hill Shadowy, shadowy, yet unbroken, Is a symbol and a token. How it hangs upon the trees, A mystery of mysteries!
  • The universe is expanding to no end (Doppler red shifts for everyone!). Life somehow was created to WANT to survive, improve for some purpose as higher intelligence (the universe IS intelligible, laws apply: hydrogen here on earth is equal in atomic weight to hydrogen atoms in the belt buckle of Orion or Andromeda), that ultimately one can gaze upon the heavens and be an ambassador to the stars. To what end is brief mankind, who, as far as we know, is the only delicate eyeblink of consciousness?

  • this is how i first heard it.. but it didn't matter.. still got me..

  • I never realized before how much my stepmother looks like David Bowie....

  • One of the best songs ever writing, ever!

  • I have that same shade of blue eye shadow...I will wear it everyday from this day forward.

  • Omg! Hahahahaha I thought this song was originally from Yann Tiersen lol

  • Did MrMajorTime just answer David Bowies Question?

  • I have only just noticed - HE DOESNT HAVE EYEBROWS!!!!

  • Love his amazing talent!! No other video like this one!

  • There's no doubt that Mars played a significant role in life developing on Earth, just as is placement of the asteroid belt, and all the delicate balances of the other planets. Without Jupiter's gravitational protective influence we would eventually be slammed by every object coming near to the inner solar system! Those "scientific" formulas allowing the possibility for life's requirements are so underestimated as to be laughable. No. We are quite alone in this eyeblink of time. It's a once off.

  • @MrMajorTime Cool story bro.

  • @pawnshoppegirl We shouldn't be "blinded by science". Until recently, most science believed expansion of the universe had to be slowing down, that gravity and frictional forces was causing matter to decelerate, to ultimately stop in its entropic tracks, maybe to even regroup. Not so. It's now been proven 180°: that galactic groups are accelerating in a runaway doplar-shift. Big Bang started the universe. Life was created and evolved. Fine. Two mysteries remain: What caused BOTH those beginnings?

  • Some say that we are, or were, once visited by aliens, that mankind was helped along by e.t. visitors, that people weren't smart enough to rise above their station on their own. Bullshit! Who the hell helped THOSE aliens get off THEIR planet? That's just taking credit away from our own race. Even under that lame theory, eventually only one civilization would have to get themselves off to begin with. We weren't helped by ancient astronauts. We shouldn't be denied our self-earned heritage, legacy.

  • Not only do you have to have a planet similar to ancient earth, but that's not enough, to just be able to SUPPORT life one day. It has to be able to BEGIN the life force, creating DNA from raw material. Earth today can't do it! Whatever conditions were once present no longer exist. Nowhere, not even ANY place on THIS planet, with all its extremes, has life been observed manifesting from nonlife. And you need all the other conditions of magnetic field, a perfectly placed moon for tidal evolution.

  • @ugowhereiwent Thanks for divulging some of your thoughts on gray. I too, also believe there is nobody "out there". Never was. There's almost nobody left HERE! There are few who don't latch on to the popular belief: "There are so many stars and planets out there, there MUST be intelligent life!?" I retort: "There have been billions of souls in history, yet there is only one David Bowie or one you or me!" One delicate place, life arising in grace, let alone survive, is beyond common conception.

  • I can see Rod Serling shaking his head if they tried to "colorize" the original Twilight Zone. "This is the fifth dimension, an area between light and shadow, between the summit of man's knowledge and the pit of his fears." It is an area we call the GREY zone. I look forward to a future with deep appreciation of the power of gray/grey. Gray is a friendlier spellage, but grey is more succinct and precise. There are as many shades of grey as any other color. And it is no color at all. A grey area.

  • @MrMajorTime a state between awakness and sleep, where the brain have a diiferent electric pattern, like meditation state, but that is a long story and a bit of an inside to myself in ''to be gray'' at the state of a begining of a space era, forgetting an older civilisation in northern europe, at the begenning of men awakeness with already an large knowledge. Men stood up still in a shadow for ten of thousand of years before. To be gray...yes...gray aliens...as i believe, gray race.

  • @ugowhereiwent at the dawn of men, baby first step, strange things in green fields of northern europe, hobbits? dwarves? a gray race. I still believe there is still nobody out there. Exept Us. Them, the gray. It is the first thing i see when i look at David Bowie androgynie. To be gray, at the dawn of a space era...

  • @ugowhereiwent a new space era, 2012

  • No where in the universe, as far as we know, life is being created from inert matter, not EVEN on earth, where life abounds! Sure, life is replicated, reproduced, evolved, changing. But the first breath of life was from an alien past, a holier time conducive to the FIRST cell. The "alien" race can only be found in our past, from pure souls, who were not dependent on imitation or even instruction. They were giants, progenerators of ideas from mind itself. Only a few true individuals remain today.

  • Remember when they used to try to "colorize" movies? Results were usually just a muddified mess of an already great film. I remember watching Night of the Living Dead after they "colorized" it. It was bloody awful! Thing that stood out was this ugly yellow tie among a bunch of zombies! Pitiful. Black and white cinematography is ironically more difficult, and a greater art, than color film. Watch a color film with the color off, it is put to the challenge of holding your attention to its imagery.

  • So thus, I perceive that the gray that is desired is the silver screen grey where all dreams are made, imagined or not. And if one has eyes to see, that from that gray that conveys all imagery, from tintypes (tin machine), to sepia, to Greta Garbo silents, all things can be perceived as either having their original colors or an consciously enhanced image. In this way all things are made complete, fresh and renewed upon each reviewing. It is down to the viewer and his frames per second to see it.

  • This is GRAY! I'm in full celebration of grey! The only noncolor color that is ALL colors. And either spelling is correct! That girl with the mousy hair (I wonder if she's gone grey by now), all the colors we see (it's been said) are really the mental perception of angstrom changes in our brains from original grey information. She's hooked to the silver screen (which is really THE reflective gray that he's been speaking of). Those old black and white movies sometimes reveal their colors in mind.

  • As far as the song goes, no, there isn't life on Mars. But it remains a wish to find some place where people live on a higher level than the iniquity that abounds and repeats itself on earth, no matter how "advanced' our civilization gets, there is still greed and cowardice and all the things that bind men to the dirt. But still there is hope. Every so often, we get a character who breaks the bounds of that freakiest show to offer that it doesn't always have to be so for ever. Some can overcome.

  • to be gray

  • @ugowhereiwent Gray? Grey like the alien? Gray like old? Or to be gray like an ancient alien? Or to be gray like gray skinned or a gray cat? Or gray like clay? Or grey between black and white, like a grey day in upstate NY? Or even to be gray like death. Gray crayons are the hardest to locate. There really is so much gray in our lives, similar to silver. Silver and gold are really the only two metalic colors we are offered. No really. All metals fall in either a grey sliver or copper gold sheen.

  • @MrMajorTime gray like the gray race, like some ancient times of man, let's say a wannabe gray...

  • @ugowhereiwent So that's ancient racial gray. Is that a light, medium, or dark shade? A slate grey or elephant grey as opposed to silver or graphite no.2 pencil grey? Solid grey or intermingled freckles or stripes? And what about tan lines or won't there be any clothing or sunlight? I'm just trying to wrap the correct gray image around my head. And do you want to be the only gray or do you also wish others to share in the grayness? Would you have gray hair too, assuming there is any? Eye colors?

  • @MrMajorTime waanabe alien then

  • @ugowhereiwent waanabe alien gray is good enough for me. If I was an ancient alien landing on this planet, the first thing I'd want is a babe. And I'd start singing, "All that I want is another babe, yeah!" Seriously though (but not TOO seriously) thanks for playing with me. I've come to believe that the shade in question is like Roger grey (on American Dad!) only slightly lighter and with minute flecks of irredescence. Good luck in your pursuit of a most worthwhile dream, if it makes you smile!

  • And let's not forget Halloween Jack ( he was a real cool cat!).

  • Don't get me wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed all the make up, the theatrics, the personas that launched Bowie's career. All those things became part of him, influences from Little Richard, Anthony Newley, mime study, Ziggy, orange hair, Aladdin, Newton, Duke. But to have this diamond in the rough, so to speak, is a great treasure bestowed upon us. To me, it's not so much a comparison of which is the better video result (THAT might change). But for now, this feels like the richer archaeological find!

  • Bowie was a gift to us at the peak of the Earth's energy, 1969 - 1979, coincidentally the main body career of Major Tom from Space Oddity to Ashes To Ashes. The earth IS dying. The oceans are polluted beyond control. The streams no longer have clean fish. The forests are wasted, and half the species that flourished when I was born are now endangered. Our only hope is to find moments of purity in art and science that will enable us to prevail by sheer will power and imagination from past truisms.

  • his eyes at 2:46

  • geeze is anyone cooler than bowie?

  • Why can't music be as good as this now? It just sucks. I was definitely born in the wrong era. I wish I would have been born in an earlier time to experience Bowie in all his glory.

  • @phudak78 You ARE born in the right era, IF you experience Bowie on ANY level now! NOW is the time! It's ALWAYS been the time. Consider yourself LUCKY that you know it. That we MAINTAIN the best of what was, IS a present goal. TAKE the BEST of the past and MESH it with what you KNOW needs to happen! We ALL have to find a way to preserve what is MEANINGFUL and incorporate all of PRODUCTIVE history into a positive future for our DESTINY, which CAN'T be denied. All this is for our VERY good REASON!

  • @phudak78 At least, his glory can be experienced now by listening to the recordings and watching the videos. It is never too late for this. I was born in the right era, maybe only slightly too late, and despite that I have missed it. Anyway, there are lots of good music also today, one only needs to find it. But no one can be compared to Bowie. He is absolutely unique.

  • RAndom hand walking across the screen. Never noticed that before.

  • This version is so much BETTER than the version on the dvd! I'm glad I stumbled on it here! I love the graininess of the film, the natural skin color, natural teeth color - everything is better. Muchas gracias!

  • @Squeaky1423 Well said!

  • Always listened to the album version, looked it up on youtube, found this and thought... whats the big 'unbleached' fuss about, then after seeing the 'HD music video' version, i realise that some people shouldn't be allowed to have computer software, and it pains me that the stupid 'improved' -using the term very loosely- version has double the views of this one, which is the actual song!

  • He's so beautiful. *_*

  • @ibederping oh yes, I agree with you, otherworldly beautiful he is

  • the phone ringing at the end has been cut off..........

  • One of THE best albums ever produced !!!!

  • Ok... I got here to try falling asleep and now I'm scared as to even close my eyes :S

  • @ezayve1030 I don't think Bowie ever looks quite human! LOL

  • I want to hit pause to go into another room, but david bowie doesn't want me to do that, so the video keeps on playing. Not only is he awesome, he has supernatural powers too.

  • @ractheangel101 Of course he does! Haven't you seen Labyrinth?

  • @Lupa1410 i couldn't stop looking at his enchanted balls in labyrinth!

  • @ractheangel101 Me too! Oh, and the crystal ones he was juggling were pretty cool, too.

  • @ractheangel101 I just felt the gravity myself, as has happened many times.

  • My issue with seeing this unbleached is i just want to be closer, be there in th white room. I don't know why, either.

  • odlično

  • Better without bleaching for me.

  • Any chance to get a better look at early Bowie's real image is a great gift bestowed upon us. The bleaching wasn't even necessary in the famous version. His own skin had a luminescence of its own that no special effect could "enhance". Still, I'm glad that now we have both to compare. It's an interesting fact: that as time moves away chronologically from an incident in history, the capacity for accuracy and unlocking scientific and esoteric secrets often paradoxically INCREASES! Thanks for this!

  • @MrMajorTime My absolute pleasure, so glad you enjoyed the footage.

  • I see a genius that realized he would get "old" someday, and seized the moment when he could. The words and the music will never get old.

  • All together Now 'MONSTERS!'

    or maybe 'SWEET DREAMS ARE...'

OR all you Prince fans go sneek a look at the inner bag

to the Purple Rain album (as in record!)

and bonus points 2 anyone who can say which

one of his royal smallness' trax 'borrows' (a l'il bit) from 'Station To Station

  • this song kind of gives me chills, in fact the whole hunky dory album gives me chills

  • Mars- Proved- Life There-Water.

    Water Can Multiply Organisms.

    Bowie-Best.

  • HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS SONG AND VIEDO ARE ALMOST 40 YEARS OLD.

  • This is not david bowie. This is Ziggy Stardust.

  • @deadzombie123 Um Ziggy Stardust was a persona of David Bowie I really hope you were making a joke.

  • @Gellintime I hope @deadzombie123 wasn't joking. What a success of Bowie that would be! :-)

  • @Gellintime Saved again by Captain Obvious. Yay......

  • @deadzombie123 I do my best to rid the world of the utterly ignorant in the hopes that one day world peace will no longer be just an ideal ahahahaha!

  • Hes a legend say no more i was there and hes a god on stage

  • I think this video is better than the official one! David looks much more human!!! Thank you!

  • @artemisia1947 It's a joy to share it with you

  • 1 person is asking if theirs life on Venus

  • Me gusta más éste que el otro.

  • THIS IS GOLD! Thanks for posting!

  • @Giakiful Thank you for looking

  • This chick sounds just like David Bowie

  • @ChristinetheReaper Because it is david bowie -.-'

  • @ChristinetheReaper

    Why do you exist?

  • So, I was just listening to the bleached version...why is it like, a half-step flatter sound-wise than this version? Just for creative reasons?

  • DARLING MARS- THIS VENUS LOVES THIS

  • Just seen the bleached one and this is so much better!

The bleached one is horribly unnatural looking. Way too white. You lose Bowie as he is almost just drowning in the light. You can watch this version without the sunglasses needed to protect you from the glow in the bleached one!

This song is from the seventies so why don't they leave things alone?

  • wow he really was like that

  • Just beyond amazing. I adore this man so hard.

  • Im in LOVE w/ his makeup!!!!! That eye shadow makes his eyes look SOOO GGUUUDDD!!!! <3 u David!!!!!!!

  • I've been trying to find this for so long! You are my hero!

  • @weareangrypeople42 and you're mine : ) so pleased you found this

  • Thanks for uploading! I hate that digitally cleaned-up version available on dvd - THIS is how he was....marzipan :-P

  • @morkygorky My pleasure, happy you enjoyed it.

  • @morkygorky Hear. Hear!

  • what kind of bleach did they use?

  • @ghodium I'd say VIM - but it was probably just the vigor ; )

  • @bhoodog haha

  • his pupils are both different sizes.. just makes him more uniquely david bowie!

  • sick bastards

  • Es HERMOSO!

  • Hey copy cats, take note of this: Bowie's hair was red, not carrot coloured!

  • Beautiful Bowie・・・

  • @bluemoonshinya He is still gorgeous

  • The bleaching is one of the stylistic devices that gives the released video the ethereal quality that makes it so special as a work of art. I think Bowie shouldn't look too human in it! It is interesting to have seen this video, though.

  • @ezaube1030 -- Exactly.The whole point was that Ziggy wasn't human.

  • @ezaube1030 Sorry. I completely disagree. The bleaching device is exactly what was WRONG with the released video! Bowie generated his own aura of illuminescence that is more powerfully recognized in this raw form than any artificial "enhancement". As we discovered in The Man Who Fell To Earth, Bowie's problem wasn't looking too human. It was being accepted as homo sapien at all! Time has shown (and is showing) that Bowie was already an advanced sport being living among us! More human than human.

  • @MrMajorTime Why shouldn' be his own aura of illuminescence be intensified by doing the bleaching? If it can even be recognized in the raw form of the video, then I think the bleaching has been done to increase that effect. I really like the bleached one better from the aesthetical point of view, to me it is more beautiful. But this is a matter of personal taste.

  • @ezaube1030 Bleached version we were used to was smoothed out somewhat more than this rougher version, both in audio and visual. Given that, I still prefer this presentation if only for the opportunity to get closer to the subject as he actually was. Even the make up was too much for me. In fact, if you removed his suit, had him reveal himself completely, you would see the radiance of his pale skin, which had a unique quality that didn't need any technical overexposure for presentation. Regards.

  • *faints* why does he have to be so sexy? LOL!

  • who knew the original still existed?! Yaaay :)

  • @SprocketTalker Us : ) glad you enjoyed it

  • Very nice, should have been included on the best of Bowie DVD

  • I think if they were going to bleach they should have gone monochrome, with black eye shadow, lipstick etc, perhaps the crowd scenes in blueprint or something.... just my penny's worth.

  • @bhoodog I'd be down to see a version of that, too. But being it was what...1969(?) I bet it was still a ton of fun to play with color on film. :)

  • Comment removed

  • Personally, I think the video was just as good if not better this way. Seeing Mr. Bowie's natural skin color makes him look more human in the video (he almost seems like a ghost in the finished product; he nearly blends in with the white background). Thanks for posting!

  • @Notzi1981 I couldn't have said it better. That this still even exists is killer! Thanks for your comment. And thanks to the postman for ringing it twice!

  • @Notzi1981 Mick Rock, the original video's director, has said he had no involvement whatsoever with the bleaching and re-editing of the video (excluding the concert shots).

  • @Notzi1981 You think THAT's his natural skin colour? The bleaching effect is SUPPOSED to make him look not human - that was the alien persona that was Ziggy in the 70's

  • This is amazing, have never seen it like this, thanks so much for posting : )
