  • Its a great tone no doubt coming through my computer speakers but it still sounds like a preamp if you know what I mean. Kudos to the tone though, it's my guess that the EQ really helps out quite a bit. I just added one in my rig after years and "Walla"....and you think thats got tone, My rig KILLZ and you would scoff at the simplicity!! I will post asap! I'm glad to see we are all tone freaks!!

  • YOU REALLY GOT HER DIALED IN!!!! GREAT PLAYING ALSO.

  • YOU REALLY GOT HER DIALED IN!!!!

  • Just wondering, why do you have a Trace Elliot bass amp at the bottom of your rack?

  • put some wheels on it.

  • Sounds great but what exactly is the Voodoo mod? Sorry been looking at this for a while and want this one cause it sounds amazing. I love the Tool riffing

  • you can google voodoo mod and it will come up. It is a guy who mods a lot of guitar stuff and turns what was mass produced sound better.

  • do you still have your jmp-1?

  • No I went with an AXE FX Ultra.........

  • I know this video was put up a long time ago but by any chance do you remember your settings for the heavily overly saturated channel ?.

  • sorry I do not remember

  • whats the name of that mxr eq rack mount ? and do they still make them ?

  • Killer Tone I love it!!!

  • am I the only one that thinks he sounds a bit like Will Ferrel?

  • quick question. does it have blank gaps when you change channels or is it seamless?

  • It is seemless..

  • Sounds great but, You JMP one preset never changes, The 9100 is not on, or lights are out and the DBX input lights seem fully gated..How is this possible?

  • Prior comments I have made said that I did still video which just captured the audio and did not allow for the video to follow along.

  • Great demo. Thanks for demonstrating how a properly set up and tweaked rack rig can sound. Very well done!

  • whoa whoa whoa... whats that last unit on your rack? i remember seeing it on like a boutique pedal store site or sumthin...

  • what the jmp1 has chorus?

  • I have the Voodoo Amp Platinum modded ADA MP-1 and was thinking about doing the same thing with the Marshall JMP-1. Have you bee happy with the overall tone and reliability? I do prefer the Marshall tone and voicing that the ADA comes very close to getting but does not nail. Also, Voodoo told me that the Marshall is better contsructed and that they have discontinued modding the ADA.

  • I wasn't a 100% satisfied with any rig until I just got my Orange Rocker 30 with an FJA tube effects loop installed. Now this is the sound..

  • beautiful!!

  • Wow ...

    I need one (or more)

    Nice rack also !

  • Where can I get a footswitch to switch between the patches and the banks?

  • You can use any midi footswitch to do this.

  • @txphi17 Which one do you use? And could you link me some?

  • I had used both a ground control and a lexicon mpx-r1

  • Hi - you rip, man. Did you get the "Deluxe" mod and did you choose the Rock or Metal mod - these are the web site choices - I love your tone so want to be sure I get the right thing. Also, can you talk about the Marshall Monobloc amp?

  • hi,

i think about buying this preamp maybe you can help me answering one question. is it possible to get a distortion close to the modern distortions of bands like bullet for my valentine, all that remains, parkway drive...?

it would be cool if you can help me ;-)

  • You will not be able to get nu-metal sounds like that. This thing nails the 80's & 90's metal perfect as well as classic rock. It will just not go that heavy.

  • @txphi17 Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter uses one of these - and tunes to F# for an out of this world low "metal" sound. How will it not "go that heavy"?

  • Dude you can hear in the video that I have it maxed out on the high gain setting and this is all it will produce. It will not do Nu Metal for sure.

  • @txphi17 what kind of amp would you suggest to produce nu metal distortion?

  • @vatomanthree You can just put some aliminum foil on the speakers for that shit.

  • @marcusrehn lol really? didn't think it would be that simple

  • @vatomanthree Bugera 6262 retubed with a "matched quad" of JJ KT77 power tubes and biased to find the sweet spot, and 4 standard Electro Harmonix 12AX7 preamp tubes for the ultimate grind! The amp will cost you 550 bucks brand new and all 8 tubes will run 110 bucks. Plus, whatever your local amp tech charges to properly bias the power tubes.About 50 bucks. You will kick a Mesa Recto's ass with this setup!

  • @lute760 holy fucking shit man thanks for the suggestion, i gotta try this

  • JMP-1 never sounded like that in the shop

  • Get the mod done.

  • Cool Rack

  • hello, I wanted to know how versatile is this preamp because I am thinking of buying, and if it is very difficult or uncomfortable to use without foot switch? because the person who sold me does not. and whether to use the fair use of jmp? or use the clean amp? and that such distortions have?

  • You really need a footswitch with this unit. It has tons of distortion sounds.

  • Very nice playin, and great sound. I also have the JMP-1 and i dont like its clean sound, it has some distortion. How did u do this voodoo mod?

  • Look up voodoo mod on google and you can go to the website and there they will give you the form with instructions for getting this done. It is worth the money.

  • very good! I have a jmp-1 with a 8008 valvestate poweramp and i want to change it to a tube power amp... what do you recommend me? can i use the power section of a amp head? Ty and sory my english i´m portuguese

  • I highly recommend the Marshall Monobloc that is the match for the preamp. It is very good.

  • Is that a 5881 or El34 marshall 9100? Cheers!

  • 5881

  • Thanks man, would you say this setup cuts through well live? Ive been through a few amps now but always seem to pick ones that are too dark and although they sound good once you start playing with a band the sound seems to dissapear!

  • I never played this rig live. I use a Orange rockerverb 50 and that is the best amp I am ever used for cutting through a mix.

  • okay, thanks man

  • @ thebiggoofer what kind of EQ would be good for that setup i want to use?

  • Get a vintage MXR 31 band rack EQ.

  • I have a fender twin amp fully tubed and i love the cleans on it there so nice! but i have a mesa/boogie studio preamp plugged into the poweramp section of the twin amp to use as a distortion because the fenders distortion isnt for me cause im more of a rock kinda grungey sounding guitar player and was wondering if theres a way i could use the mesa boogies distortion and the fenders clean tone at the same time and switch between. thanks if you could help me that would be most appreciated

  • Get an AB switch

  • who makes them and are they specificaly for amps and this will work ?

  • many people make them. Visit eBay under guitars/part and accessories and search AB.

  • oh yea i was want to go with 2 Marshall JCM 900 cabs to make a full stack

  • I am hoping to get some OLD metallica sound anything before the black album lol. But what i was asking was if that setup would even work

  • I think i will use both the GMajor 2 and the Korg tell me if this setup will work or not you think ?

    Samson PowerBrite Pro15

    Korg DTR-2000 Tuner

    TC Electronic GMajor 2

    Behringer DI pro 8000

    Marshall JFX 1

Marshall JMP 1 (running 1 side of amp)

Mesa Boogie Triaxes (running 1 side of amp)

    Marshall 9200 Power Amp

stacked in that order. What do you think will it sound killer and even work for me im a rack NOOB lol

  • I am not sure what that will sound like because they are both so different sounding. Also, your speakers will play an important part.

  • gmajor is a solid multieffects unit... the triaxis alone will get early metallica but .. if you listen closely (to the likes of ride the lightning) .. do ya really want that sound? I believe I read that they used a lot of EQ and ratt distortion pedals at that point.. thats why it sounds solid state to some degree. your missing an EQ from your list (for some reason the gmajor doesnt have one) ... thats sort of the key.

  • which is better of the two do you think ? I am playing old metallica

  • are you talking about the tuner or the JMP-1 versus the Rockerverb? If you are talking about the tuner, get the G Major for a little more money. If you are talking about the Rockerverb it kills any JMP-1.

  • Would it be wasting money to buy a Korg DTR-2000 tuner and a TC Electronic GMajor 2 to go in the same rack I am building ?

  • Yes since the G Major has a tuner already.

  • thise od sounds sound awesome

  • What's a "voodoo mod"?

  • google voodoo mod and you will see all of the details under their website.

  • cool thanks!

  • This guy change sounds but JMP's patch is always same

  • NoiseGate works in the JMP-1 effect loops different ways. If you set it 6 then you have parallel type and if it 12 you have serial loop. So if you run parallel 50/50(wet/dry) you can't use NoiseGate but if run like serial (tweak 12) it works of course.

  • Hi Im thinking of getting an JMP-1 , I'm asking this question to all of you JMP-1 owners

    its regarding the effects loop:

if I set the effect level to maximum, does it cut out the direct signal completely?

or do you get 100% direct signal and also 100% effect?

I would want to use the effects loop for a noise gate and would not want any direct signal to get through

    thanks

  • The effects loop is great on this unit. You get 100% direct signal plus 100% effects .

  • so a noise gate would'nt work in the effects loop?

    that's a shame

  • Absolutely a noise gate works in the effects loop.

  • Hi txphi17 thanks for your reply, I think I might have phrased my inital question badly

so if I had only a noise gate in the effects loop, I can get it to cut the signal completely? silence?

the reason I ask is that I have an ADA Mp1 and the effects loop on that is just an "in' or "out" setting for each patch

wheras the Marshall has a numerical value that you can dial in for the effect for each patch, I wasn't sure if it worked the same way

  • Hi! Yes and no :-) Effect = max gives you only the wet signal. That was the idea anyway. However, in reality, when setting effect=max the dry signal is still present approx 40dB down. That is, the loop never goes 100% dry or 100% wet, but almost. This may seem unimportant, but can actually cause some weird phasing sideeffects, which is what turned me on to meassuring this in the first place. My conclusion, forget the JMP1 effectsloop and place your effects before/after the JMP1 alltogether.

  • in the end I went for the Marshall JVM410H, still has lots of midi control, and sounds like a real Marshall

    very happy with my choice

  • the effects loop goes to 12. if you set it to it to 6 it will be 100% direct signal and 100%effect

    on 12 it's 200% effect

  • Nice thanks alot :) I hope i become a rock god befor i get married and get kids XD

  • Hey man, great sound u got going there. I wondered what this vooodo mod is? What does it do? and were did u get it? What does it do to your sound?

Do you play in a band? If not u really should :P

  • I got this mod from Voodoo mods. You can google them and call them. They have a detailed explanation of what the mod does but it basically makes your sound usuable. It cleans up the cleans and takes the fizz out of the distortion. I used to play in a band for many years until I got married and had kids. Rock on brother.

  • how come the jmp channel number isnt changing with your patches? did you do audio and video separate?

nice sounds, im using a regular jmp1 at the moment (non modded) and loving it :D

nice bit of tool in there too :P

  • I did have the record the audio separate from the video and then marry them together.

  • What's the Voodoo mod ?? Thanks !

  • That vintage MXR 31 band is orgasmic..

Did it cost much to get?

    Thanks for the demo.

  • Strangely enough it adds so much improvement to the JMP-1 and I found this one for $50 several years ago.

  • How does the OD on the preamp sound by itself (It sounds alright through here, but you have effects, and I'm guessing it loses some character through the mic) Cause I wouldn't mind getting my own rack set up, but all the preamps I find are too digital, and I hate any touch of digital tone in my overdrive.

  • This preamp is far from any digital sound. It is absolutely perfectly analog sounding and tube. I am running a little G Major reverb which doesn't color my original tone. You can mic it with a decent mic like an SM57 and get stellar results. Also, this preamp has probably the best simulated cabinet outputs ever made. I have recorded direct from the cab outputs and it sounds phat without any mic.

  • Cool man, thanks. I've seen a few of them on Ebay for like $600. Once I get a job and get some shit out of the way, I'll buy one and a 50/50EL34 power amp.

  • I owned both this exact pre-amp with the Voodu Mod and a Rocktron Voodu Valve. Sold the Marshall. The Rocktron blew the Marshall away in every respect - clean channels, overdrive, and the simulated speaker cabinet can't be compared to the Rocktron.

  • just wanna ask, is triaxis usage is similar like JMP-1 ?

  • I owned the Traixis as well and it is pretty Mesa if you like that sound. They both operate via midi to switch channels and are very easy to program. They both sound great but for the $600 extra they cost, I think the JMP-1 is the better value.

  • Not at all. JMP-1 sounds like a Marshall. Triaxis sounds like a Mesa. Both good in their own ways. Both have their place. Check out the Rocktron Voodu Valve if you're looking into a rack-mount unit.

  • unlucky me, now marshall has discontinued JMP-1 product. what is the most similar product to replace JMP-1/JFX-1 that your suggest?

  • Don't try to replace it instead buy a used one on eBay for $400.

  • how about the quality a used one?

  • I have seen many good ones out there

  • Are you satisfied with the quality of the effects in the g major?

  • I actually just changed the g majors out for rocktron intellifex & replifex units because I found they sound better than the TC units. They are old school but sound of a higher quality

  • Thats why Many Metal/Rock pros use these JMP 1 Preamps. I used to swear by the Boogie Tri-axis, but when I tried one of these Marshalls I damn near died! I now Play through a Mesa QUAD pre hooked up to a Mesa 2:90 Power Amp. Forget about it!! Similar to the Marshall, but more versatility. Great tone btw txphi17

  • Dude, you've got some bad ass killer tone! Tell me, is this the Marshall preamp and the poweramp what I'm hearing, or are there more effects turned on right now? And what Cabinet do you use?

  • Thanks Bro. I am only using the Marshall pre and power amp plus a G Major for a little reverb. The cabinet is a Diezel 2x12 rear loaded with custom Eminence speakers. They are like Vintage 30's without the major scooped mids. They are a much smoother sounding speaker but with as much low end punch.

  • wow this is making me second a splawn quickrod

  • I like the splawn but this is so much more versatile and the tone on these is unbelievable. With a good power amp there aren't many things that can hold a candle to them.

  • now thats tone!

  • the overdrive sounds fat as!

  • Voodoo does a great job at improving the JMP's overall tone. I love what they did to my MP-1 Much better than stock

  • I have an unmodified JMP-1 and was looking into the Voodoo Mods. I'm just curious as you're switching through channels, the patch number doesn't change.. Why is that?

  • Because I recorded this via mic directly into my computer and then still recorded the video and married the two together so you wouldn't have to suffer a crapped cam corder mic and you could hear the real sound.

  • Ah, I see.. I was a little concerned that maybe the mod had done something to the preamp. Sounds great though, I have to say. I assume you're running through all the rack gear, but did you try it more or less dry with just the pre and power amp? I'm curious to know what it sounded like in basic form. Thanks in advance for any info.

  • I was only running reverb and a little delay. The unit sounds the same either way because the g major does not color the original tone.

  • Pshew! Your sound blew my socks off (now my feet are cold). Now I'm horney to have a Voodoo JMP-1. I had an EL34 50/50 and an ADA MP1 for the longest time, and it just never sounded like a Marshall of any vintage - so I sold the whole rack idea and got a TSL (which I love to death). But your rig is just what I had in mind back in my rack rig days! Good job getting this album quality sound, I know it's a lot of work and money spent finding it.

  • wish i was in the USA voodoo do amazing mods. sound is so tight.

  • Which amp's preamp section is most similar to the jmp-1's overdrive channel? JCM 800?

  • I would have to say something between the jcm 800 and 900.

  • what EQ is that ?

  • MXR 31 band.

  • Standard or Deluxe?

  • Standard...

  • never thought i'd say this to a guy but "nice rack"

  • Silicone breast implants baby...There the best..

  • lol

  • y did they discontinue this product?

  • Yes years ago.

  • it all goes through the fx loop then to the power amp then mic'd.

  • Wow! That is a really great heavy Marshall sound! I see a lot of gear in the rack and a mixer. Can you tell me the guitar signal routing? Does all the stuff go through the mixer to the power amp? What's in the efx loop? Would you mind sharing?

  • Wow, thats the best MODERN Marshall sound I've ever heard

I'm happy to see that Marshall also have amazing Modern Sounds... So THANKS FOR POSTING!!

  • You sound like Dane Cook in the beginning.

  • how much does it cost ??

  • This mod is $295 through Trace at Voodoo Amps and is worth every penny.

  • yeahh really nice stuff man so keep it up.

  • Sorry, i don't mean to sound ignorant - but for the less informed like myself, could you please explain what the mod is? I'd like to know a little more about how it works and what the benefits of getting such a mod done are, what's improved etc? I'm thinking of buying a JMP-1 + 9100 myself.

  • No worries. It takes the clean channel and gives it more head room so it won't distort. It also takes the distortion and makes it usable meaning no buzzy fizzy sound and you can hear every note being played. I have since moved to a Diezel VH4 which is the ultimate amp.

  • The mod cleans up the distortion and keeps it from being fuzzy. I have the gain on 18 out of 20, treble on 2, presence on 1, bass on 6 and mid on 2

  • and the next "heavily oversaturated channel":D?

    sorry for double post!

  • Not sure what you mean???

  • you know eq settings and gain volume etc?

and what does this mod really do?

  • and i m sorry my first post didnt go throught:D i m asking for the setting for the overdrive and "heavily oversaturated channel" that you had:) and what the mod does to the sound:) thanks and sorry!

  • beautiful sound, this makes me want one soo badly. I played michael wilton's deluxe modded jmp-1 today in his home studio...it kicked serious ass.

  • Did you get a gain boost on your JMP-1? Or is it the same amount of gain? I need more gain out of mine. Was just curious. Thanks.

  • I didn't give it more gain just better sounding gain. It also improved the clean and gave it more head room so it doesn't break up when used with a hummbucker. The distortion does sound much better and not fizzy or fuzzy sounding.

  • Cool thanks!

  • I didn't record the audio live on the camcorder. I recorded the audio direct into my computor and then replayed it into the camcorder while taping the rig.
