  • This is good, but this is Helen Sjöholms song. She does it best.

  • awsome performance and outstanding recording!!! i love kerry!

  • Not bad, but I miss the despair Helen is delivers in the swedish version.

  • Kerry is very, very talented; and it is a very difficult song to take on. But, I haven't yet seen it work for anyone other than Helen. I do not know how this is possible, but it just is. .. We can say that there are many talented singers of this song, but there is only one person who got it..

  • i hate how people always compare and aruge, we ar comparing some of the best singers in the world, does it matter who is the best they are all fantastic

  • Kerry > Helen > Susan

  • The voice is beautiful, and the confession honest... However, though it may be a valid and true question that she is asking of God, we must know that we cannot lay the blame on God for taking a life. Job 34:10 states that God does nothing cruel or unjustly. Rev 12:9 tells us that the devil is misleading the whole earth. Therefore, Rom 5:12 which in harmony tells as that because the devil misleads us, and death is a result of sin - God does not cause death.

  • @DgreeCelcius Completely disagree.. Innocent people who die of terminal diseases that have done nothing worng in their lives: my stepdad for example, how do you explain that? I am not saying that God DOES cause death, I'm just saying that it shouldn't be ruled out that he doesn't.

  • @BOWYERD999555 - This is not what the bible teaches. We were instructed to beg forgiveness for sinning by thought, word, and deed. Therefore according to Rom 5:12 - "through one man sin entered into the world, and through sin, death" - those who have become terminally ill, cannot be pardoned simply because they are ill. They too have done wrong. Don't misunderstand. Persons who are ill, are not deserving of their bad faith. Nor can it be said, that those who are not as ill, are blessed.

  • @BOWYERD999555 What is it about sick people that absolves them from sin? Jeez. Let sympthy and empathy remain in their own place and leave sin and death in there own place. We all die... not just terminally sick ppl. JOB 34:10 says what?! Jehovah God does not kill persons. Imagine how He feels being blamed for something He does not do. How would you feel? I guess it's ok, because someone is sick, but if someone is ugly or unkind or bad... is it the same? What makes sick ppl Innocent!!!

  • incredibly special lady . LOVE YOU KERRY ♥

  • @conansback She never sang this song?

  • Dear Malin Centergren and all other good Swedish patriots. I have now listened to Helen's Minnesota version of this song as you urged me to. To claim that Helen has more power than Kerry Ellis is clearly a lie. Trots allt så spelar Kerry i "the premier legue" och Helen i Allsvenskan. Förstår ni skillnaden? Each their own, but you are clearly not objective.

  • Kerry has an amazing voice, but, Helen has "ruined" this song for me. Anyone else singing it, just sounds like a fake to me, sorry, but the original just cannot be matched.

  • This is perfect. I really love both Kerry's & Helen's versions & can embrace this incredible song in both languages. In my heart, I can feel the power & emotion in these two artists' interpretations. Just gorgeous! Unfortunately, sorry to say I can't relate to the lame attempt at this song by Susan Boyle & her mimicing (parrot-like) style with no real feeling or understanding,

In fact, wishing so fervently for Him to "take her hand", she would not, as she did, thrust a FIST! skyward! Bad.

  • Lets not argue other Kerry or Helen the real issue is SUBO stealing this amazing song and obviously doing a rip off version of kerry's from her anthems album

  • Helen is the real queen..

  • Interesting to hear someone else than Helen sing this, it is a mission impossible... Kerry is ok, a bit too nasal for my taste, I think Helen has a better technique and more power... If you do not believe me, see Helen singing the swedish version on the Minnesota concert.

  • People who are saying she has no emotion must be deaf! She sounds hysterical and on the edge of tears! So much passion.

Oh and Kerry is LEAGUES ahead of Helen vocally. Such power!

  • @idinafanboi When Helen sings in ENglish I must say Kerry is better, maybe a linguistic thing. And I could say Kerry has a more trained voice. But if you listen to Helen doing the Swedish version in Minnesota you will see why we call Helen better.

  • just a helen sjöholm wannabe..

    good try though.. ;)

only helen can sing this song and give it justice <3

  • Helen does this way way better. If u havent heard her version do it and listen to the original version in swedish aswell.

  • Better then Susan Boyle, no doubt!!! But Helen is still the one to sing this! :)

  • I thought Susan Boyle kept coming in too early, the melody has a rhythm like a gallop and Susan Boyle gallops like a three legged horse. This version is fantastic. I'm not surprised Kerry Ellis growls at the mention of Subo's version.

  • I feel like she's singing an anthem not a personal drama. Great voice though.

Helen is best. I enjoyed Susan's first volley onto this field.

  • Comment removed

  • This version is fabulous! Helen's rendition is great, but this is even better, IMO. Having heard Susan Boyle "trying" this song is a complete letdown after hearing Kerry Ellis actually DO it.! Kerry's voice & emotion are light years away in superiority, and she doesn't have to take a deep breath, as Boyle did between the last TWO WORDS, to really belt out that last note. Breathtaking! Thanks so much!!

  • It's weird. Kerry Ellis clearly has a great voice, but for some reason she just always seems to be devoid of any kind of emotion. It's the same when she sings the songs in Wicked. She gets loud. She does vocal runs. All of that is fine, but still, nothing. No feeling. I don't get it.

  • I actually like this version until it reaches 4:20 then she gets too fancy, where Helens version has soultearing emotion in that part of the song. Better than Susan Boyle but Helen sadly beats her.

  • There's no real emotion in the performance. She's singing the lyrics but do not act out the emotions behind the words like Helen Sjöholm does.

  • Kerry is a fairly good singer, but she lacks the despair Helen Sjöholm never fails to deliver. Kerry sounds more triumphant and pompous. I just don't think it corresponds with the lyrics and if you're familiar with the character Kristina you know it definitely doesn't fit her.

  • Helen's interpretation is beautiful and very emotional, specially in the original language. Kerry is tremendously powerful but is Susan's performance who gave me the chills. At the end, it will be good for the three of them because I'm sure it will be Susan Boyle who will bring more viewers to Helen and Kerry's videos.

  • @FromLandOfFire You're absolutely correct! I had never heard this song before and when I saw Susan Boyle sing it on AGT... it brought me to tears, it still does every time I hear it.. That is what brought me here to search for this oh so lovely song.

Why is everyone comparing these two wonderful singers? Music is a unique interpretation and BOTH of these artists should be respected. Imagine if Kerry were to read the top two comments? How truly sad it would be.

  • Both these ladies have stunning vocals but for some extrange reason, I still prefer Susan Boyle interpretation.

  • susan is queen?? she rose to fame for having an average voice and only impressed because we all expected her to sound like a dying cat but sounded alright??!!?? while both Helen and kerry have worked and trained?!? susan could never sing with emotion or depth as either helen or kerry!!!!!!!!!!! that is a fact!

  • what id love to hear is a sarah brightman version ..hmmm think that would be wicked..

  • Now I've just listened to two of Helen's versions of this song. One in English and one in Swedish. I like Kerry's version better. Kerry can hold the song all the way through and still save some of her voice for a really impressive grand final. I could see all of the emotions in Helen's face as she sang away, but was not as touched as I was from Kerry's version where I had nothing but the soundtrack. If you favour Helen's version better, you are probably a Swede sticking to your own kind. Svensk.

  • Not even close to Helens performances

  • The thing I personally don't like with Kerry's version, is the emotion put into the song. I don't feel it the way I do when listening to Helen's version, in both Swedish and English.

  • Not bad but Helen is better imo.

  • Lite släpigt måste jag påstå

  • Kerry is the best performer when it comes to the english version. But the swedish version is a hundred times better... and frankly.... Helen is way better than Kerry when it comes to this song. I believe that's mainly because so much is lost in the translation... I mean, the english version is not nearly as complex and filled with despair.

So what am I rambling about? If one "forgets" that Helen sings it, then Kerry would be best. Sadly, she isn't. ^.~

  • Check out her version on 'Anthems'.

  • Love her singing this. Would never have know or heard about this if it wasn't for Kerry Ellis. She is outstanding.

  • Damn, I read in a comment for Helen's version that someone liked this version better so I had to check it out. This is good, but not even close to Helen!

  • In my opinion - nobody can trumph Helen. She is outstanding on stage. She is just one of the few that truly captures the audience whatever she is singing, because she IS what she is singing. Kerry is great and I love her, and I love her rendition of the song, but she simply isn't Helen. I saw KfD 5 times in Stockholm and in comparison Helen is outstanding. She would rock your socks off anytime :)

  • To those who don't understand swedish: you don't know what you're missing. The swedish version of this musical is so extremely beautiful. Maybe it's a bit pointless just stating that but I felt I had to. The music is obviously the same in the translated version but the magic is gone.

The swedish version of Kristina I believe to be one of the great musical works of our time (and therefor of all time). If you try to translate and water down such a masterpiece you are doomed to fail.

  • Kerry is the one.

  • Helen simply owns the role, she is a superb actress and one of the best ever performers in the world to express emotions so perfectly and in such a rich detail. Nothing more to say.

  • Comment removed

  • Kerry is really good!! but Helen is always going to be the best

  • the original is much better /watch?v=vk76_iqw-Pc but hey, everyone doesn't know swedsh.

  • I like to poo, it makes me feel good

  • Amazing.. her version on the album is amazing! Enough said.

  • This song is perfect for Kerry! God I love her!

  • @greeeeeg2 I don't think that Helen's better because she sang it first. Kelly is very good, but I think that I would've thought that Helen's version is better even if I heard this one first, So it doesn't have anything to do that I can't accept that anyone else can do a good version out of this song.

  • Comment removed

  • wow this woman is so good and she sings it well

  • Nope sorry Helen is better....

  • @VimzMimz yep im with you all the way on that comment.xx

  • ok so i just went and listend to helen live , after reading everyone say shes better than kerry and OMG LOL she is soooo not. Sure i'll give u that she has more emotion in the song maybe. But in terms of singing she has nothing on Kerry's power and range. Kerry in my opinion owns this song and puts helen to shame. helen has the emotion , but not the voice. sorry to the helen fans

  • @DanCamz You're either, drunk, deluded or of diminished responsibility. Probably all three. (That's just a joke, by the way). I was lucky to see Kerry's and Helen's performance live from the font rows. While Kerry was the highlight of the London ABBA tribute show for me, seeing Helen perform the same song in New York two weeks later was a different league.

The one thing here that annoys me about Kerry is her "breathing in" on a note..."eeeehhooouu, have to be there". That's pretty awful!

  • @woutch Dear me, criticising Kerry's breathing is going a bit far. This is a problem with the rather high treble sound mix here, not the vocalist! Helen breathes in the same places too you know, it's just not that prominent in the mix.

  • @james64ok But Helen doesn't breathe in ON the word. That's what Kerry is doing. .."aauuhheeeouu have to be there.." That's really poor!

  • The original lyrics are so much better...she sings really well, but not as good as Helen. I'm happy that I'm a Swede, so that I can understand how great the oroginal really is. But as i saod, Kerry is still very good.

  • I'm sorry, but the original is so much better :(

  • @70H4NN4URl34N Nothing is better than kerry ellis! :P

  • @Chiquitita1994 missed this comment, but.... Helen is, but that's my opinion.

  • God singing but english doesn´t do this song justice, it looses all its emotion. This song is to reflect a women in disspare in the 19th century in a forren country.

Good song....but its all there is just a song

  • No one, repeat, NO ONE, is singing this song better than Helen. I'm swedish, and I'm PROUD. Helen has all the feeling, the anger, the passion. This version isn't bad, but no one can beat Helen. And that's it.

  • Comment removed

  • does anyone have the sheet music for this please!

  • It's crazy that a person can sing this well!

  • helen do this much better

  • I´m so sorry, there´s only one woman that can do this song justice and that is the original Kristina: Helen Sjöholm. Watch the clips on the right and compare.

  • She is truly one of the best Elphie's ever :D

  • wow wow wow! i could listen to kerry ellis all day, she's beyond amazing!!

  • this is such a good recording! Kerry's amazing. End of :) I love her, what a voice! :D

  • Kerry Ellis has a great voice and is very musically talented. However this song is too demanding for her to sing successfully, and very few can (Helen being one of them). Helen also adds emotion behind the song, making it more powerful than this one.

However this is one of the better other-than-Helen-Sjöholm versions of this song that I have heard. Gratz

  • She's wailing way too hard and pushing out of tune. What a shame. Can't anyone sing this song properly apart from Helen?

  • I don't think so, belting is Kerrys speciality so it doesn't sound strange to me :) Helen does have a good set of pipes but thats not the point. This is a video about Kerry. Talk about kerry, not helen :)

  • @Xfactories "out of tune" ?? Really ?? Sounds to me like this girl has perfect (or as close to it as you can get) pitch. What is it with you continental Europeans that you are so in love with this Helen whoever - that you have to trash this woman ? I've heard Helen, yes, she has a gr8 voice - so does this woman.

  • What continental europeans? I'm from NZ you presumptuous retard. And sorry, but as a singer myself I can tell when people are in tune. There's more to mus theatre than belting every single song like Kerry does,

  • "And yes, I'm American". Case closed.

  • @rondack17 Leave Crowded house out of this! ;P

(And it's Helen Sjöholm. One of the best singers of all time..hehe)

  • @rondack17 hey, dont bash my entire country becos ov that retard. and u obviously think ur betr than us, so keep your hypocritical views to yourself thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • HAHAHAHA! i don't like your kerry bashing. but i love what you just said! HAHA.

  • Hehe I got nothing against Kerry (I wish I did :-P) - but like most singers she's better at some things than others.

  • What are the lyrics of the line after 'from the land where I was born'???

  • I listened to some of Chess in Concert at the iTunes store as I was thinking of buying it and Idina Menzel is so awful (nasal, irritating voice) that I changed my mind. She ruined it.

  • I have to agree about the voice, its a little annoying but seriously don't let it put you off. I got the DVD for my birthday and it is AMAZING!! Idina can sure belt a note no matter how nasal! And as for Kerry, well she steals the show! But yeah, I highly reccommend that you do get it.

  • @chareid5 her name is Kerry lol

  • Helen Sjöholm made this song better. Enought sad

  • Agreed - But she does not have the drama & film exp. As long as Kerry continues to waste her time doing Queen shows, she won't get that experience. ALW passed over Kerry as the female lead to open his new show in London. WHY ? She can certainly sing the part. IMHO Kerry should try for a few film roles. Expand horizons, get some film experience & larger media exposure. Or, stay a minor star only in the UK. Which, IMHO would b a shame. She is pretty enough and talented enough to do so much more.

  • dont talk nonsense kerry is not right for the lead in andrew lloyd webbers new show, the role of christine is for a soprano, she is about to take the lead in oliver and she will be amazing as nancy

  • Kerry is a mezzo soprano w/ the capability to sing soprano (then again that may just be her Agent puffing up her resume ! ) She would have been OK for the lead in LND. While I have no doubt she will do fine in Oliver. I also have no doubt it will do NOTHING to further her career. It is a MAJOR step down from Wicked. She will get little or no press out of it & certainly far less money than she was making in Wicked. Oliver is just a old retread in the West End in a medium sized theatre.

  • i think you wil find that apollo victoria has 2,208 seats and drury lane has 2,237 so actually more so it is hardly a medium sized theatre

  • and oliver is selling more seats than wicked at the moment, you can get tickets at all prices for wicked any night of the week

  • Ummm.... Oliver is at the Drury Lane which is the second biggest in London, one behind where Wicked was at the Apollo Victoria.

  • @rondack17 what's with the 'medium-sized theatre'?! Drury Lane is one of the capital's largest theatres, and certainly one of the biggest theatre stages in the country! Also, I bet Kerry isn't doing Oliver to further her career or make obscene amounts of money (although I'm sure she'll be paid pretty well!), she's doing it for a love of the show, which I admire. Grrr lol

  • Comment removed

  • That is true but keep in mind she is recording an album as we speak, I think this is just some sidework to keep herself in the public eye while the album is being finished and produced

  • Okey, this is not an easy song to deliver,

but she did a really good job. But of course I have my favourite. I saw the musical in Malmö, Sweden in -95, and the way Helen Sjöholm performed this song is still the best I've ever seen or heard on a musical stage.

  • I totally agree with Geminie1, it´s not Helen but still not bad. Anybody who listens to this version are obliged to listen to Helens version aswell, it will blow you away!!

  • Benny and Bjorn were tied up in the courts for the last 10 years. Now with the matter decided, the Carnegie concerts a smashing success, and the recording to be released in February, "Kristina" is ready to storm Broadway.

Here's a quote from a friend of mine who sang professionally. We attended the Carnegie concert on the 23rd. She had thought the Carnegie concert of "South Pacific" was as good as it gets:

"If this does come to B'way, I really think it will be the biggest hit in years ."

  • It's so beautiful! I keep repeating it over and over.

In swedish it is called: Du måsta finnas

    If someone was wondering;)

  • Kerry and this song equals - BLISS :-D Love it!

  • What a wonderful song? What a shame that the show has not reaped the success it deserves outside Sweden?

  • First: ILOVELOVELOVE this!

Second: I would also love it, if I could go on a video related to Kerry Ellis, Idina Menzel or anything related to them, and not see an argument about who's better, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but come on, why ruin the beauty of this song? Or any song for that matter, with this idiotic argument, Kerry and Idina both have their strengths and weaknesses, everyone knows that, so it doesn't need to be pointed out!

However, I still LOVELOVELOVE this :D

    xxx

  • this show is being staged on 14th april at the albert hall

  • I was there too - tickets were part of my birthday present.

She was spectacular. She did a fantastic job - the crowd were nailed to the spot when the sang this song.

  • LOVE THIS SONG - capital letters.

I'm a bit obsessed with it

    Worry clinic

    lol

  • It's not Helen Sjöholm, but good enough. I LOVE this song!

  • Pretty good. If you like this, you will love this one:

    watch?v=vk76_iqw-Pc&feature=related

    Its truly Helen's song.

Look at her face, she feels what she sings, almost painful to watch...and powerful.

  • This sounds AMAZING...and the new translation is much more close to the original text's meaning. :)

  • it is after 5 in the morning

i;m still listening to this. Loved the original and love kerry doing it - am i sussing a london opening?

    It;s now even after 5

SHAME ON KERRY FOR KEEPING ME UP

  • This is great! They've done a few changes in the english lyric! Kerry is great... But nothing beats the swedish lyrics still.

  • This was one of my highlights that evening. I have seen Kerry live a few times and she is getting better and better every time. And she is a lovely person in real life too

  • Finally!!! Two of my favourit things. Kerry Ellis & Kristina fran Duvemala!!! <3

  • It's "Kristina from DUVEMÅLA" !

This performance was truly amazing it was a joy to be there.

A million times better than Alice Ripleys released version.

However for the ultimate version of this song check out "HELEN SJÖHOLM" who will be performing this at two Kristina concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall, on 23/24 September. If any of that turns up on YouTube be prepared to be totally gob smacked

It's A shame kerry wasn't used for Chess last year, insted of that awful Menzel woman

  • Kerry was in Chess though...

  • Thanks for that "poshboy43" What I shold have posted is that Kerry should have played the main part ( Florence) as her voice is far better & stronger than Miss Menzel. Of course this is only my opinion. Many others will no doubt disagree

  • I think Kerry is better than Idina, but I like them both. And I think that what Idina sang was amazing too. I love her singing Nobody's Side, anyway, they both get some pretty good songs each.

  • You are very welcome to share your opinion about what real theatre is, and how you feel about Idina and Kerry....BUT It's not really fair for you to some up her fans as "stupid" ....that's not very nice!

  • I didn't sum up her fans as stupid, I consider myself as one of them. I said most of them are. Most of them haven't even seen another musical (apart from other crap like Spring Awakening and Legally Blonde). I don't know why I got so many thumbs-down for that comment - it's almost a fact that Menzel has stonger acting abilities than Ellis and that is reflected in their levels of success. Clearly the obssessed, blind idiots (which make up about 70% of her fanbase) are upset lol

  • As much as I LOVEEEE Kerry, I agree with xxbeczzzxx. Idina is something special. She is the "Queen of Broadway" after all. Years ago people used to think it was Idina who had the crazy, obsessed, touchy fans but I actually think Kerry's is worse nowadays. At least Idina fans have enough respect, sense and theatre manners to be quiet during their songs on their last shows and only scream their heads off AFTER the song has ended! lol

  • Totally disagree! Musical theatre is about both acting AND singing. While I would probably agree that Idina may be a stronger actress, Kerry is a natural performer and vocally outstanding! You're probably just bitter that she's so much more sucessful (and talented) than you. Otherwise you'd be out there performing - not slating her.

  • I didn't say musical theatre wasn't about singing. However, acting is much more important. It's THEATRE. Not a choral concert.

All this being said, Kerry is a great actress and Idina is a phenomenal singer aswell (obviously).

And I hate when people bring up that last argument. It's just completely ridiculous and irrelevant. I have no desire to be a performer. You don't have to be a chef to send back cold soup.

  • I like that - "You don't have to be a chef to send cold soup back". Now, I'm going to disagree with both of you: Kerry is just as good an actress as Idina WHEN she is motivated. Watch the Chess DVD. Her acting is quite good. Watch most "Wicked" shows - her acting is mediocre, if not flat out bad. However, u won't find many instances of Idina gving a bad perf. That's 1 difference between an experienced actress & 1 still learning. There is a reason Idina has a Tony award.

  • wtahc the chess dvd and tell me idina is a great singer, she sounds like minnie mouse

  • Menzel was miscast as Florence, that's all. I love her voice. Listen to Rent, Wicked (when she wasn't sick) or her album I Stand. Idina's voice has a uinque tone and you need to take it as that. Not compare to Kerry and Minnie Mouse.

Watch the Chess DVD and tell me Kerry Ellis wasn't a weak Svetlana (given, the role is underwritten though).

  • why do i need to watch the dvd i was there and believe me idina sounded even worse live

  • Whatevs. You don't need to like her. I'm not gonna try and force you to.

  • i dont dislike her as a person as she seems very nice, i just think that she is not as good as many wicked fans think, in their opinion she can do no wrong, and every time i have seen her she had been mediocre at best

  • Did you see her live in Wicked?

  • yes unfortunately i did and she never once hit the note at the dend of defying grvaity, i suppose it could have been worse they could have asked trey diggs to do wicked too, their broadway duet on youtube is painful on the ears, he is even worse then idina

  • dude , you should've been there on her final night , i believe there are recordings on youtube , listen to those , maybe you got an offday or what ever , thats your bad luck , her vocal capability destroys anyone else who has played Elphaba

  • krisitna is being performed on 14th april at the royal albert hall

  • Where did you get the photos from ?x

  • Ohh.. your a twin right ?

Have you listened to it on i-player, everyone sounds terrible and flat especially Nerina and Jason!

  • She was even more amazing live! The people shouting Kerry were men next to me who got really excited when she came on because I had been talking about her and had a 'we ♥ Kerry' banner and wanted to see and hear her! x

  • Love it!

  • She's the best...

    Amazing vocals...

    I love Kerry Ellis :)

    <3

  • Amazing. It may seem sort of bland especially considering literally everything else at the concert was the classic pop-folk music of ABBA, but when you listen and take into consideration a few things...

One; the story. If you know even a little about Kristina and what it's based off of, this is brutally intriguing. Especially the music CONSIDERING the...

    Two; lyrics! Basically the above.

    Three; Kerry! Her voice...her...Kerry-ness. It's the kick-assery.

Favorited. x3 Thank you, BBC R...

  • a beautiful song, beautifully sung

  • She is incredible :) I'm sure this song could sound REALLY boring if it was sung by some...but NOT KERRY :D

  • a boring song? ou're either deaf..or MAD!!

  • Well said Woutch

  • This song was a success in Sweden and by fans of the musical. But that is relative to the fact that they know the story and kind of music that the musical has. This song and The Gold Turned Into Sand were both well-off singles in Scandinavia. Though the English-lyric version is a bit below the original, but still great.

This song is one of my favorites amongst musical songs, but I guess tastes are always split :)

  • chess is hardly a flop. its one of their most successful collaborations. having set the record for a female duet best seller that still stand 25 years later, and any concert version sells out instantly, they dont write theusual sickly sweet shows like wicked, where the main song has only ever been sund well by kerry, idina couldnt reach the notes, and also idina sounds like minnie mouse on the chess in concert dvd

  • Gary you are assuming I don't like Chess. I love it. I bought the Chess Concert DVD as soon as it was released. Yes, Idina can sound like Minnie Mouse, other times has a gr8 voice. Not as powerful or high as Kerry, but close. If Wicked is sickly, well, every musical would love to be so sick ! Yes, Chess can sell out a concert for a couple of nights, depending upon the star power of that particular cast. Not for 6 years straight like Wicked. BTW, Chess sold out in London mainly due to Idina.

  • A lot of it was probably to do with Josh Groban too.
