the best strategy i can rely on is to memorize the places of the items that belongs to the original six in the order:
Mario (hat)
Luigi (hat)
Peach (crown)
Yoshi (egg)
Wario (hat)
DK (tie)
these items are guaranteed to get knocked off.

@spearman485 Wouldn't that require you to intentionally remove the all the items that were already in the right place? Heh, yeah Ive done that.
