Me, I don't think 'souls' exist. I think their fictional and that there are no such things as souls. And until the existence of the soul is scientifically proven, I see no reason to believe such a thing exists.

BUT.

If I am wrong and humans DO have souls, then clearly so do animals.

And what I think is much more important then that religious soul business is that animals, like humans, DO have thoughts and feelings! Just on their own level. (Which is still higher then most people would think.)

I think that dog, Brownie. Who threw herself in front of a truck so that a kid from her family might live actually totally fucks up the tired old creationist canard (or would that be a crocoduck rather then a canard?) that only Jesus supposedly ever sacrificed his life for something.

Given that Brownie DIDN'T come back from the dead, I'd say that dog just won at sacrificing herself for someone.

And I agree, fuck religion. It does much more harm then good.
