  • yeh needs music, but graphics are good, def better than 32x and 3DO versions

  • You know what's bad in Doom on Atari Jaguar?

    -No Music during the gameplay!

  • Playing on Hurt Me Plenty?

    Shameful, dude.

  • Are you playing this through A/V Cables? Because it looks so much smoother than when i play mine.

  • I think I remember reading waaay back in the day that the reason the music was left out was to make the game seem scarier. I believe I might have read that in an EGM or Gamepro a looooong time ago.

  • @StarkJJ yah i heard the same thing too!

  • its the same of avp, same scarier, same goodass, but no music, well, avp had almost no music

  • I played this and died, and without the music to set the mood, it scared the shit out of me.

  • The 32X version looks like this, but with music so it is a lot better.

  • @ClickPanic i like the 32x version but i find the music and sound is so poor, its a case off it would be better without music.

the game play is certainly smoother than the 3do or saturn.

but i find i still lags behind the jaguar.

and it plays in a scaled down frame where the jaguar is full screen.

but its what you enjoy playing thats the best version.

love the music in the 3do version, love the atmosphere in the ps version

    people like different versions.

but what ever doom you like playing enjoy

  • @ClickPanic well the graphics are a little more blurry and enemies are 1 sided and farting music and no BFG9000 and spectre-cyberdemon-spider and only 17 levels

the atari jaguar is has 24 levels with music that sounds like ducks but only at the stats screen and all weapons and almost all demons still no spectre-cyber-spider but they all turn 8 different sides

  • my uncle works at atari and was on the developing team for porting this game over to the jag, and he toldme why there isnt any music in the game. the reason is that they were planning to make a seperate cd with hi def music on it that were supposed to be played while playing. but this was planned before they began to develop the cd addon. and the reason why they didnt released the cd with the music was because the cd addon thingie wasnt able to play both cd and cartride at the same time.

  • @HerrGubba

and sorry for my bad english, i am norwegian

  • @HerrGubba its ok buddy. we always wondered why there was no sound in -game. Some people thought it was because some kind of system bottleneck I think.

  • @PointlessAndAwesome i got to admit i do prefer the jag version even to the pc version some times.

i know it dosent have crushing ceilings, or music.

but their a pace to the game play thats apealing

  • @PointlessAndAwesome the original ultimate doom improve on its intial release and had great online gaming support as well.

i recognise the xbox version and the xbox live as the best consule way to play doom, but its the original pc version on there and not really a xbox 360 or ps3 or any off their versions.

  • @PointlessAndAwesome i dont count the xbox versions, simply because they are not conversions really.

they are emulation of the exact ultimate pc doom, so on the xbox and xbox live version are the pc versions.

    not a coversion.

infact since the xbox is just a big windows pc very little emulation is nessacery, can run almost natively.

the ps1, jaguar, 3do, saturn, snes, 32x, gda, n64 etc are all consule conversions, not an emulation

  • @PointlessAndAwesome the jaguar version is my faviourite based on game play and i dont have to cycle through weapons.

the playstation i find is fast enough but generally slightly slower than the jaguar version.

but the atmosphere of the audio and 3d lighting, the extra content comdining the upgraded ultimate doom & doom 2 making the ps1 the best overall package.

but for game play i find myself playing the jaguar version more than i do the playstaion.

both versions are fantastic in their own way

  • @PointlessAndAwesome wasnt counting the xbox versions or the xbox live versions because its just a straight pc ultimate doom 95, so not counting them as a proper port.

so obviously they're going to be good.

ps1 version is awesome added a lot, 3d lighting, the ultimate doom version of the original levels and doom 2,

since the jaguar version was out the door months after the origianl pc doom, it has none of these thing, it even has no music, but to my mind has the fastest fluid game play.

  • When playing this version, you may wanna put on a CD, like Iron Maiden, Slayer, or something of that nature.

  • since there are music files on the cartridge?

a few have told me on forums they had accessed it

and i can think off many games that implement music and game sounds on the jaguar.

think the claim about technical difficuilties came more down to a.

a brand new consule, and very early development, and a short development time.

not that the jaguar was or wasnt capable

  • oh and there is ive heard a hidden easter egg, that plays music in co-op and deathmatch

game play dosent slow down either which shoots down the claim, that the jaguar had a problem implementing it.

an excuse maybe, because the development time for this coming to the jaguar was so short.

just imagine how much better this could have been with a slightly longer development time.

john carmack has released the original jaguar source code in 2003, hopefully someone will release an enhanced jag port

  • im a doom head, got the jaguar just based on how good this game was on it and got ever consule this was released on, and a copy off doom

snes, 32x, 3do, jaguar, playstation, saturn, gba, pc, mac (n64 doom64) the bonus content on the original xbox doom3 and resurection of evil, xbla,

this is m faviourite version off the consule ports along side the playstation.

for game play though this is rated number 1.

slightly faster than playstaion version and co-op and deathmatch between 2 jags is awesome.

  • my jaguar isnt laggy, guessing this is run in an emulator.

too me this is the best consule port of the first doom levels.

the compromises made this the fastest playable version on any consule.

the 3do, 32x, saturn snes etc were laggy and prone to slow down.

linking up 2 jags for deathmatch and co-op this version is an unbeatable version.

also i love the ps version the most complete consule version,

and the snes, even though its sticky walls slow & ugly its an amazing feat for the snes hardware

  • This is just as laggy as the 3DO's port! What the heck!

  • @winlover37 No...

  • @haxor758 You sure?

  • @winlover37 You should check it out the 3do has like a downsized screen and horrible lag. This is probably the second best doom port only second to the perfect 360 version. The only thing I hate is the no music! :(

  • @haxor758 I've seen the 3DO's which is terrible. As if the downsized screen was bad enough, it can't even run smoothly. It's just this video makes the Jaguar's version look laggy......

  • If only Silent Doom meant Silent Hill and Doom combined....

  • silent doom !

  • Gee, that music, man. It's sure something. The third stage's soundtrack really got me, it made me rethink how I was playing. I wish there was a CD with the soundtrack, so I could buy it three times.

  • The mission is maybe to find the music

play it without any music, find the music, now play it again with music

  • 64 bits? mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • Yes these games gave sound CyberTechArtist. ID said they took the music out of the Jaguar version because they felt it was scarier that way. They also tried this with Doom64. Some people hate it, some people love it.

  • @Joeyboots80 yes but doom 64 had atmospheric music not the normal rock beat. This is just silent.

  • @Joeyboots80 At least Doom64 actually HAS music lol and it's pretty good

  • did these games have sound anyway?

  • You are really bad at this game lol! I see you gave up and entered the cheat

  • I followed AVGN's advice and put on Slayer while watching this video. Awesome.

  • I like Doom without music. The music can get on your ears after a while, plus it's creepier without it.

  • OMG ITS GOTTA LOAD!?

  • "I call this one 'silent doom'. Just put on slayer and your all set."-AVGN

  • this guy sucks

i beat doom on snes with ultra-violence

snes version has stiff control and bad graphics -_-

  • COMBINE ATARI JAGUAR with 3DO then there will be kick ass

  • you know it WOULD have been great if it weren't for the "no music" problem.

  • Doom fuck Halo with the chainsaw and Twilight with the BFG 9000

  • I think if the Atari Jaguar version had the 3DO music from Doom, it would be perfect.

  • Was this intended for CD release since the game's all muted?

  • @nicholasthetaylor Doubtful - the game came out less than a year after the Jaguar's launch. I can't imagine that Carmack was relying on Atari to put out the Jaguar CD that quickly.

  • @ENGN no seriously playing this game made me feel sick cause of the 3d graphics almost like a motion sickness

  • never could really play this game like 10 minutes into it i start to feel sick to my stomach, anybody else had this problem?

  • @ooikwf absolutely not... did you play Doom 3? That's real fear.

  • @ooikwf Ive had that problem

  • Although for the music, this is a really good port,

This port became the basis for the Playstation, saturn,32X, 3DO and GBA versions

  • Comment removed

  • "Just chuck on some Slayer and your set" - AVGN

  • yeah the game soundtrack is really good.

  • Well look how the 3do version turned out. It had the best music but the lag made it unplayable.

  • The Jag made a good DOOM, but I would imagine that I wouldn't want to play it with that Jag controller. So it defeats the purpose. The Playstation 1 is the only system to play all the original DOOM games.

  • doom on atari?

  • there is no music in the Atari versoin except when you complete a level

  • At the time, people thought Jag doom was so coo-well.

I say it sucks: No music, no cyberdemon, no spider mastermind, no interlevel map (hardly a biggie, but still), no *darkness* for fuck's sake (yeah, way to kill most of the suspense!) a shitload of missing levels, and a shitload of levels maimed by having areas removed.

    And it's stuck in low-resolution.

And the frame rate isn't brilliant.

And the actual gameplay is inexplicably slower than in any other version.

    What a pile of poo!

  • @AlephNeil I thought Jag Doom was only missing the Music not levels, monsters and Ambiance. I know the 32X version is missing levels and has crummy music.

  • @AlephNeil Have You played the 32X. 3DO, Saturn or SNES versions? They're all slower with smaller screen sizes. The 3DO version is so slow it's unplayable and the SNES and Saturn version aren't much better! The Jag version is much smoother than all of them, there's no boarder around the screen and it was the 1st version of Doom to be ported from the PC so it was the only option at the time if you didn't have a PC.

  • @MN12BIRD But the jag version doesn't have a soundtrack. Therefore, it sucks. Heck, the fart orchestra of the 32x pwns this shit.

  • wow the music deserves an orcar

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa The music deserves a whale?

  • @aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa you tube ha un frame rate che non corrisponde a realta'

e la musica in midi file di doom sul pc e' veramente brutta!

dimenticavo te gioca alla piesseics!!!!! che e meglio!

  • they didnt make it red

  • I guess Doom is the game, which has been ported to everey machine possible :) No other game could beat it. I mean PC DOS, Windows, PSX, Saturn, N64, Jaguar...

  • the controller only had 20 buttons, I don't know why people say it sucks..... (jk)

  • i know i find the atari jag contoller to be very comfotable and have a really awsome d pad

  • opinions all the way, some say it sucks others (like you) say it's pretty good. Oh well

  • Best console port of doom until Doom64...

  • @MrHabaki Playstation one was better.

  • well, as far as I remember it came out later than the Jaguar version and when I played it on a friend´s psx I wasn´t really impressed... maybe it is better in some aspects, I don´t know... but when Jaguar version came out it was definately the best by far! The first really better looking one was the N64 version (which is more a sequel than a port)...

  • Yeah Doom 64 was origianlly called "The Absolution" but it was so similar that they just made it a Doom game instead.

  • the jaguar makes the wii look like cliford the big red dog's bitch

  • I still find this to be one of the best ports... I just bought a Jaguar again and this is one of the first games I bought.

I actually like the absence of music, it adds atmospherics to the game. Personally, if someone wanted to play a revision on a console, I would tell them to play the Jag version over the PSX or any others (other than the PC).

  • holy shit this port has the best music

  • @kochkochkoch What music?

  • the jaguar was 526 bit !!!

  • no it was OVER 9000 bit

  • not true, the jaguar was actually a 50,0000bit system

  • The Atari Jaguar was niether 64 nor 32-bit.

  • i love the music

  • @jake38989 whats worse the horrible music of doom in 32x or no music on the jag?

  • @djmick90 i think the music is awesome on the jag better than the pc version

  • @djmick90 The 32X version, because that version is an insult to the pc version's music.

  • @catclaw357

Better than the Snes version though... rather take crappy music to the crappy grainy graphics and delayed response of the Snes..

It had a cool cart though....

  • @colliric I agree.

  • @colliric not too mention it cames years earlier on the JAG

  • Dude you missed all the secret doors on MAP 02. lol

  • ¿no strafe?... o_O

  • Strafe by holding C and left or right. A bit awkward at first but it doesn't stop this from the best port of Doom 1.

  • i have a Jaguar, and I need this game

  • other than the no music part this is the perfect port

  • *cough* PSX

  • DOOM, AVP, IRON STORM 1&2 ARE GREAT GAMES FOR THE Jag. Doom came out in 1994 for the jag and at the time it was the best port until PSX version.

  • Crappy, crappy music only at the end of the stage? Are you kidding me? 64-bit my ass.

  • This was a great port. I really enjoyed this game with the jaguar controller.

  • The Jaguar was an awesome console! The controller was almost as big as the console itself. With just as many buttons as a standard keyboard, but thats ok!..... ahhhh...how I love that old Jag!!

  • my brother just gave me his, but i only have nba jam and a mortal kombat clone

  • I didn't miss the music and after playing the SNES, 32X, Saturn, and Jaguar versions I'm impressed with this Doom the most. Only the 3DO had great music until you got to the PSone version. I loved this on the Jag.

  • Doom is a classic, even in a failure console like Jaguar. No music because of memory limitations, I supose.

  • WHY DID YOU NOT CHOOSE ULTRA VIOLENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pussy... Doom is quite easy but i dont really see much of a difference between thepc version you should maybe try the out the 3DO version that dont look too bad :>

  • the music is slightly different though...

  • what music

  • This looks as close the PC verson, but where is the damn music?

  • Where the fuck is the soundtrack?

Solid Snake: What happened to the music?

  • play some slayer and your set

  • You watched the AVGN episode, didn't you?

  • of course i did, i love it when he reviews consoles and periphials

  • There isn't one.

  • @mikeycomputer The game has all the music, but only heard in the score screens when you finish the levels. Performance problems when the music is enabled?

  • @lNFERNO Really? Well shit! Fucking Jaguar...

  • yeah, doom without the soundtrack isn't really doom to me...

  • @360guy0 ...I thought it added to the gameplay, a different atmosphere, I liked it. Compare this version to the Saturn, 32X, 3DO and SNES and you would much rather play the Jag Doom.

  • @360guy0 i know right i have alot of roms for each kinda doom and each one without music except the one i got for pc and the sega 32x one its just not right

  • the only reason i hate this version is because there is no music.

  • they guy playing is just so much getting on my nervs

  • the snes version wasnt bad at all the only thing it lacked was the graphics they suck

  • this is the version closest to the pc version

  • Yeah, in terms of framerate and graphics, my only problem is, where the fuck is the music?

  • snes doom ftw, why you ask? because at that time people were still playing DKC and Mario world, then DOOM! and the music is the best.

  • Ther first console doom was made for 32x... All versions are base in this console.

The more similar version is for SNES (like PC).

The Dreamcast version is only 100% equal.

  • You have no idea what you're talking about.

  • Jaguar Doom is most certainly better than psx and saturn versions. Trying to argue with that fact is straight up fart-face

  • I would say that it's amazing for it's closeness to the PC version. The saturn version sucked, and the PSX version wasn't all too bad. It was actually really good!

  • nah the saturn version aint the worst i like it personaly i also have the snes version i cant think of anything nice to say about that one ive never played the ps1 version tho i'll halfta start looking for it

  • Yeah, I haven't really played the saturn version. If the Jaguar DOOM had music, it would be the best DOOM Console Port ever made!

  • if u havent played the saturn version then why would u say it sux?? lol the only bad thing about it is its not as smooth wen u turn and wen theres too many enemys on the screen it goes slow motion like a old nintendo game

  • Try the Dreamcast.

  • The SNES version actually isn't all that bad. It's slow and it makes quite a few concessions for its lack of processing power, but it's stilla fun game and its very playable. I have a bit of a soft spot for SNES Doom since, at the time, it was the only way I had to experience the game.

The 3DO version is the most abysmal version of Doom. It's virtually unplayable.

  • Its funny how psx doom is considered better when they used jag doom levels to make psx and saturn version. hilarious.

  • By the way your playing it, the controls seem awkward

  • why is there no fucking music

  • theres no god damn music because the doom version of the jaguar didn't have music during gameplay>:( only during the victory or intermissions or loading did it have music. this is why the jaguar didn't last because they fucked up doom

  • Do you really prefer music to gameplay? If so then i shudder to think what games you think are great.

  • nah its just games like doom scare the shit out of me and the music helps take away the scariness

  • depends, if the music in a game sucks then I turn it off, but with a great soundtrack like doom, the jaguar version kinda dissapointed me:( still great game but without the great music. but the only game that I turn off the music is runescape because I dont like a lot of the songs and I use my songs from my zune

  • Music ot gameplay is very good in my case. It makes the gameplay fell a little less bland . Even if its the drerry-boring "atmosphere" shit.

  • yea..Big F****ing Gun

  • thanx for clearing that up...i got the plasma rifle and BIG 00000024 or somthing mixed up

  • No problem! And it's "BFG 9000." Any guesses on what you think BFG stands for? I'll give you a hint...the first word is "big."

  • Comment removed

  • although i dont remember the gun that shoots blue lightning balls(i remember the plasma rifle though)

  • That IS the plasma rifle. ^_^

  • man i loved this game... sadly my jag broke but i might be getting one soon off of ebay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i remember all the demons, weopons and i remember i used a cheat for god mode and my little face had golden eyes to symbol that i was invincible....good times...good times...

  • man I loved Doom so much man that was such a fun game I remember playing that game for hours and the time just flew,Great game.

  • U do know its on xbox live right?

  • pretty good port but why no music?

  • no one knows. not even AVGN. He just said:

"Just turn on some Slayer and you're all set"(quoted from Atari Jaguar Review Part One.)

  • Actually there probably wasn't enough room for music, I dunno.

That might not be true though.

  • Probably not enough ram. This version runs full screen and has very fast scrolling. If music was added it probably would've ran half screen with choppy scrolling. Something had to give. I griped about the lack of music too until I played it. I quickly forgot about the lack of music.

  • "Just put on some Slayer and you'll be all set." - Angry Video Game Nerd

  • I can't still imagine I used to play this first on my Super Nintendo as a teenager - and I was quite happy being able to play it!... nowadays I think even these Jaguar graphics really suck, although they're a mixture of 32/64 bit, you can really count the pixels on screen *lol*. For heavens sake I got a playstation and a pc...

  • and it has music

  • i have this one the xbox live arcade

  • i play Doom music in the media player while I play this one haha pretty clever huh =D

  • hahah really?

  • yeah xD

  • PSX and D64 were the best console Doom games. Both had undeniable atmosphere that the other consoles lacked. Least favorite is 32X version.

  • Do you mean Doom64? This is really great, but a different game (in my opinion). PSX doom and Jaguar doom are quite similar.

  • PSX and jag were best: Jag best graphics, PSX best music. D64 was anal rape to doom

  • How was Doom 64 "anal rape"? They were aiming for a darker feel for Doom just as the PSX version had done.

  • In all honesty, if people are that fussed over music, just burn the music from a different platform (like PS1) to play onto CD then play it through your CD player.

It's not because they didnt want to, it's because they couldent put music because of the ROM's tiny 2MB size. Somethings gotta give...

  • this version is just absolutely good, despites the lack of music in the actual game,i don,t really cair about it cuzz the gba music is boring wich i wanne turn off.

  • Original Doom was so far ahead of it's time.

    Boss status.

  • In all honesty, I hate playing this game on the Super Nintendo. I own that cartridge as well as versions for other systems. Sure there is music, but it's mediocre and the graphics are terrible.

This version on Atari Jaguar kicks ass, period! XD

  • Well I heard that they had some license troubles using the ingame music (it´s all about money). In fact if you do a deathmatch there´s a cheat that one player´s Jaguar plays the music and the other the sound, so you´ll have both...

  • In this verson of doom, can you shift right and left, because if not, that wouldnt be the version for me.

  • the only thing that suck in this version is there no music

  • The Jaguar version of Doom did feature selected music tracks from various levels, however, they were played during the intermission screen and not during actual game play. The Jaguar version of Doom also included full character animations from all view angles, but did not have either the Cyberdemon or the Spider Mastermind enemies.

The Jaguar version of Doom had more levels than the 32X version of Doom and less levels than the SNES version of Doom. Each port has its strengths and weaknesses.
