Sneaky Pete is great. but it's pretty clear by his playing, the expressions on his face, and the way he keeps looking at the other guys, that he's having real trouble hearing the rest of the band onstage, which is a pretty typical situation at a festival where there's not much time to sound check. at least that's what it looks and sounds like to me.
@mcdstuff lol he looks sneaky. It's funny how he looks up at the crowds reaction when he solos..he makes it look so effortless what he's doing but I'm sure it isn't. Anyone else think the bass player looks like Gerry Dee?
great ! Bernie forgets the lyrics,,,he's singing Gram's original part, and clearly having smoked some great bud. This is why I LOVE YouTube - where else could you get this??
@labluvver The Festival Express DVD.... It chronicles some of the greatest artists that have ever lived or played together (The Grateful Dead, Janis, The Band, The FBB's, Buddy Guy, etc....) on a train touring Canada and stopping to do concerts in between parties. It's a great documentary.
'Should have paid more attention when these guys hit the stage, but I was in love with Alvin Lee! (Hah! Only 15...what did I know?) Now, a BIG fan of Burritos/Hillman/Parsons/Emmy Lou....this is GREAT music for all ages.
How the hell could someone not like this? well, there is one misguided soul out there. I am 29 and no way todays musicians could hold a piss to these guys.
Wow, I want to be at that fair. This is just a dream video. A world that we know longer around. If we could get this energy into our corporate days life would be so much better. How come these guys are not in the Rock and roll hall of shame! What a joke. Madona and rap word shit. Long live the real music
@hillolly - I was there, in Toronto. I was 15, looked around, NOBODY that young anywhere, but my big sister took me (She was 21) Changed my life. Two days of....The Band, Burritos, Ten Years After, Great Speckled Bird, Janis Joplin, wow, wow, wow.....
Hillman is great but as far as the first few Byrds LP's - the Wrecking Crew did the music- played the instruments...that's Carol Kaye on bass on the Byrds 1st LP.
A strong argument can be made that Chris Hillman was the most talented electric bass player of the 1960's- listen to him pump and swing on this three chord throwaway-then go back and check him out on the first six Byrds records.
@Nyquilcoma There may have been more talented bass players, but I'd definitely list Hillman as the most underrated. I love his playing on this and Six Days on the Road. Like you said, they're just three-chord rockers, but he really kept them rolling along nicely.
A historic piece of recording --the Festival Express, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, July 4, 1970 ...
This was the FFB first live gig after Gram Parsons had booted from the band just a week earlier ...Bernie Leadon singing lead ... and he & the band were great...
...the late great 'Sneaky Pete' Kleinow, probably the most underrated pedal-steel guitar player --truly innovative
@billrdk50 Chris Hillman is the man!! Ever notice the great steel guitar players around him. Sneaky Pete Kleinow here and then Jay Dee Maness with Desert Rose Band. Sneaky Pete maybe was the best of all with the lap pedal steel, may he rest in peace.
the stones owned gram's version of wild horses on their monumental sticky fingers lp...i like the burrito bros but their lps were a little bit inconsitent..the stones had better albums overall...just listen to stuff like sweet virginia or dead flowers..the way they mastered those american roots music being englishmen..bombastic country-western-blues-rock-southern stuff by that time...the arrival of jimmy miller & mick taylor played a key part on those lps...peace!
great classic video! I saw them 3x, never with Parsons, but they always put on a great live show. Saw them with Sneaky and then Al Perkins on steel. Is there more video please? Bob
You can see/hear where the Eagles got their inspiration.

@ausgang Gram had already been kicked out for a couple of months by the time they did this. Rick Roberts had yet to arrive in the lineup.
