  • It's nice to see a woman with a strong head on her shoulders who "gets it"....good job Kris...

  • The trouble is the planet can only support about 500 million people on a sustainable basis, and right now there's 6 billion and counting. Since nobody in power seems to be planning for a controlled transition or if they are, they're not talking about it, then a hard crash seems inevitable. All of which suggests to me that the population is going to fall far below 500 million before it begins to rise again...

  • That's what pisses me off - the guys in power aren't openly talking about it. The transition groups and the Peakists and the like are in the tiniest of minorities, government, mainstream media and big business are mum, and "the masses" are too busy with their day to day struggles (and 'distractions') to stop and listen to what that tiny monority are trying to wake them up to.

I guess it's time to yell louder...!

  • My suspicion is they know all about it and have simply decided it's not in their interest to share the info with the rest of the class. If the masses knew what was coming, one large faction would emerge to demand an end to the oil wars. Another faction would go to the opposite extreme and demand total war against any rivals for the Texas Tea. Both factions would demand that the oil industry be nationalized immediately which the Big Boys wouldn't like at all.....

  • youre stone wall mad!!

  • Great to see you back! I hope you also will make a video about overpopulation. Prosperity and population growth are related in a way that everything we do to make our lives better in the end only results in more people. I think every step you take to make a better future, without dealing with population growth, is futile...

  • People like you amuse me. You really haven't figured out what's going to happen to all those excess people? I mean, REALLY?

  • The saddest thing is that you obviously don't have a clue yourself. You should see the video of albert bartlett (google on bartlett.wmv) about growth... Just do it...

  • Nimaden - try not to be so condescending. While I beleive there will be some die-off as well, there will also be relocalization, transition, etc. In short, there's going to be a whole lot of good and bad going on.

  • "try not to be so condescending"

A fair criticism. In my defense, so many people are clueless it's easy to assume almost everyone is. Clearly you're not, although you're still more optimistic than I am.

Personally I think that if by 2100, the planet has even 100 million people left and a few small cities with some technology still functioning, we will have done very, very well. More likely by 2100 there will be only 10-15 million people left and no technology higher than the mid-1800s.

  • I have to be optimistic, despite the various factors that feed my cynical side. My role as "dad" demands I try to be positive, and even more so, do something about it. Last year I founded a transition group in my neck of the woods. If and when the sh8t hits the fan, I will at least be able to look people in the eye and say "I tried."

About your projections, I would tend to agree that's a possible outcome. I hope you are wrong, but it's so damn hard to see how this will play out.

  • Really nice technique, interviewing yourself. You did a good job in both roles. - Dan

  • Nice entry, Kris. Wondered where you had been lately! Go Transition! - Dan in NYC

  • Interesting... Sometimes crisis helps build community. eg: when it snowed here, in 96,(so much that it paralyzed the city for a week) we met pretty much everybody on our street & dug eachother out & stuff like that. Snow melted & we barely see each other except the odd wave now & then...

Interesting also the isolationist & survivalist thoughts that the idea of change produces.

Good on you Kris. You are real & interesting, I'm glad you share this way

  • Good luck with that Kris. Personally I think we're too far gone into isolation as individuals and the society is too dependent on systems that can't continue to function much longer. It appears to me that we're headed for a financial and social collapse, complete with starvation, cannibalism and any other horror you care to name. Local economies will be key but they'll be out in the sticks where people are prepared and much more self sufficient. I think my best bet is to "bug out".

  • 2. I was once of your opinion, that we could solve this by brotherhood, relocalization and permaculture but I think that ship has sailed. Nowadays I'm arming myself and preparing to live in a really nasty barbaric world. I'm stockpiling food, ammo, guns, and survival know-how. I'm networking with survivalists and have a couple places to go. Do I like this? No way! I'd much prefer it if you were right, but you aren't. The ones who survive this are building lifeboats and casting off right now.

  • 3. I'm just grateful that my mechanical and electrical skills (I can fix nearly anything) have made me useful enough to be invited into a couple different groups. Now I'm deciding which one to hook up with so I can start pre-stocking supplies there. I make over 30 an hour right now so I have the ability to assemble a good amount of supplies before everything collapses.

As for you and people like you, I wish you the best of luck but I'm not optimistic for your future.

  • When we get to the cannibalism phase, if I'm still alive, I'm gonna get myself a bottle of A1 sauce and then I'll go knocking on Ted Turner's door...

  • I am unemployed. I was going to join the Army but the lady in yellow got me to change my mind. So where do I sign up?

  • I wish you good luck!
