  • Who are the people in the photos?

  • Beautiful-Thankyou x

  • Raglan road has many memories......me, one of them.....no one special, really, except I am another ghost of Love.

  • Lets say I am since a week or two a fan of May Black (I am Dutch and that is probably the reason I had never heard of here before, but is never to late for good things).

  • wouldnt it be great to hear Mary and Luke sing it together?

  • Where's Mary from?

  • Several years ago when I first heard this song on a Chieftains album, I was searching my mind for where I heard this before...having not previously heard a recording. I finally deferred to my Mother and asked if Daddy had ever sung "Raglan Road." At 80+ years old, my Mother replied "your Father stood in the kitchen doorway and sang this after your sister's wedding (1971). Each time I listen to this song, it gives me chills, smiles and fond memories of my Dad even to this day.

  • her voice is very pretty, i would actually would have liked to hear the pouges sing this song..

  • Such a sweet song... ;)

  • I love the version of Raglan Road by the Chieftains on Tears of Stone.

    Ann

  • u obv not heard donnie munroes version then

  • Fantastic...the best rendering of this song that I've heard, second only to Luke's.

  • Turn off the sound and she looks like she's doing a news report.

  • will this performance ever be improved upon, or is it the most beautiful forever?

  • @coreolis7 It's good but try listening to Luke Kelly's version.

  • This song speaks to me, the tonality moves me in ways that words fail to describe. This is a great song and Mary is so very good. Its Christmas and this is a gift to me. God Bless All Here.

  • God this is the most mellow but powerfull song I have heard in a long time, I love it.

  • Very good, but I will always love Luke Kelly's version best.

  • I love Mary Black, the sweet voice of Ireland, but this song is best sung by a man. Mark Knopler's version is bitter sweet and haunting.

  • prefer lukes version

  • going thru different versions of this song, being a huge fan of Luke Kelly, this version teared me up.

  • Loreena's version is dreadful. It's far too mannered.

  • Just... perfect!!!!

And I'm a Loreena's fan and love her version very dearly but this one... So simple... just perfect :)

  • so very beautiful!!!

  • In my view, the best version ever and I've heard most of them. But, of course, it's entirely a matter of personal preference and I wouldn't want to take anything away from the many great singers - Irish and other - who've tackled this fabulous song over the years. Can anyone point me in the direction of a recording of Mary Black's version? I'd love to get hold of one but, as far as I can see, she's never officially recorded the song.

  • Try Loreena McKennitt.

  • @bristle66

If you download the free program youtube to mp3 converter from dvdvideosoft you can get an mp3 from this video. Hope this helps ;-)

  • Hands down the best version of this song EVER....... till Loreena McKennitt sang it.

  • Loreena McKennitt's version of this is terrible. I'm all for respecting other's taste in music, but Loreena takes the song out of the folk music idiom and tries to make it pseudo-classical, and it doesn't work.

  • Van Morrison recorded this with the Chieftains.

  • no im not, this song was never called the dawning of the day or the dimming of the day, its the poem "raglan road" by patrick kavanagh.

  • the melody is dawning of the day an old irish tune, luke kelly put the kavanagh poem to the tune. its an old irish tune, Fainne Gael on Lae, as gailge

  • Very beautiful song

  • Lovely song.

    Norfolk

  • Mary is gorgeous, and such a sensitive singer. Beautiful song!

    USA

  • love everything 'bout the tune & video...great synchronicity

  • the dawning of the day is a different song completely

  • I think you may be thinking of "The Dimming of the Day", a Richard Thompson song from the mid-1970s which MB performs on the "Babes in the Wood" album.

  • Wasn't this originally The Dawning of the Day?

  • No but the actual music is the dawning of the day slowed down. It was luke kelly and paddy Kavanaghs joint decision.

  • Many years this Kavanagh's lyric and the interpretations have been inspiring. Today, hearing Mary's passionate air has put the hairs up on the back of my neck.. This is precious and spiritual experience and the finest anthem of Ireland. Love from Stephen, Kei and Jay in Wales.

  • Decent version bu seriously wat r ya's all on? Luke Kelly makes dis poem/song wat it is. So much so dat Patrick Kavanagh asked Luke personally 2 sing it. N wen he did Patrick Kavanagh cried, saying it was 1 of d most beautiful tings he ever heard. Luke Kellys version streets ahead of d rest!

  • One of the best versions I've heard is in the movie "The Matchmaker" where a guy sings it A-cappella in a pub on the Aran Islands.

  • I agree with you, stjamesg8. The guy singing it in "The Matchmaker" was awesome. Wonder what his name is?

  • I didn't mean to put down Mary Black. She does a breathtaking job on this beautiful song!!!

  • I can't find his name. I've looked through the cast names but never mentions him...only the first two singers. BTW, like Jebbi956, in no way do I mean to put down Mary Black's version. I love her singing but just prefer the way Raglan Road was done in The Matchmaker.

  • Lets see what Flick Mannery scan do with it, Everyones fine except for Mark Muffler who is treasonic in his awfulness

  • For my money Mary Blacks version is more soulful than Sineads...but good as they are - neither come remotely close to Joan Osborne and The Chieftains...makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

  • Mary Black is wonderful.She's the real thing.Have to say I love Sinead's version,too.

  • schön

  • Regardless of the merits of all other versions..this sends a chill up my spine. Beautiful !!

  • Though Mary is an exellent singer, I like the version of Carmina's Pippa Marland much better.

  • Lovely version.

  • 00000 no!! luke s is the definitive version !! sacriledge anyone trying to sing it likewise dirty old town and bonny sholes of herring!! long live luke rip follee dat!!!

  • pure class :) xxx

  • wonderful, wonderful,wonderful.

  • I agree totally Mary has a great voice, would love to hear she and Loreena Mckennit and Maire Brennan do a few classics, like Londonderry aire, She moved through the fair, Suil'a ruin. Etc, and really the fileds of athen ry.

  • This is much better than Luke Kelly's in my opinion

  • u tell him! lol

  • Absolute arse. In my opinion, Luke Kelly really does the definitive version.

  • I am a Luke-Kelly-Fan as well! Nevertheless is he not the only one in the world, that can sing classical irish songs as they should be. So please let there be more tolerance and benevolence to other interprets ...

  • you're right. Each to their own. I apologise for my abruptness. I do like MAry Black, but for me, no other version comes close to Luke Kelly's.

  • Aaah! now isn't it grand for a glimpse of the Auld Sod. Tank you very much.

  • great song about such an ordinary street in dublin

  • Patrick wasnt a liked fella in his locality, how do i know, well its my area,He wasnt liked cuz he gave away the farm that was handed to him he hjust gave it up,he was a grumpy man and not liked in dundalk due to his blaintant ignorance to everyone,

  • check out luke kellys version, this and luke kellys are the best. Luke still has more passion in his voice, more rawness.

  • The dutch group Rowwen Heze does made theire own version of this unbeliefable beatyfull song and that one is almost as nice as this one but diffetent.. thank you Mary. - with love Peter.

  • Paddy Kavanagh came into Tommy Ryans (Now the 51) and had the song written on a piece of paper and tried to sell the words for the price of a few pints, he and Brendan Behan drank there all the time.

  • sorry, thats Dean Moriarty

  • Wasn't this written about one of his pupils when he was a young English teacher? There is so much meaning behind the words. A beautiful song, a lovely version from Mary Black. Having said that, Luke Kelly made it his own. Nobody comes close to Luke's version.

  • According a clip from RTE that I looked at this morning, the song was written for a student named Helen Moriarty. She had no interest in Kavanaugh. He was 20 years older than she was.

  • Sorry, that's Hilda Moriarty, not Helen.

  • this is a lovely version of raglan road.

  • cool, thanks

  • Mary is my favorite Irish female singer , it' great to see this here , when was this recorded ?

And she is standing on Raglan Road ,Ballsbridge , Dublin , Paddy wrote this about his girlfriend.

  • It was Recorded in 1986, the Concert was called Songs of Ireland. Phil Coulter playing the piano. Frank Patterson is also singing on it.
