  • i was reading an artical on my macbook usin safari and it just gave off this high picthced, scaratchy, white noise around 50dba, its 3 1/2 years old. i knee halp

  • I think that's just the fan.

  • @weinerschnitzelboy The computer is turned off...

  • You're unlucky. That hasn't happened to mine....

  • southbridge chipset - normal -> happens on most laptops - not a cpu whine

  • It needs multi-layer polymer solid state capacitors. It's due to electrical charge being not used by your PC ( less than the maximum output ) so the capacitors will literally vibrate at such a high frequency you can hear it.

  • This happens with the M1530, too...I'm surprised that it wasn't fixed with their newer laptops.

  • Most notebooks make that noise when the battery is charging. The MacBook Pro I just sold did the same thing. A Compaq I had a year ago also did the same thing when charging the battery.

  • Thanks for this, it useful as I'm strongly considering buying one of these.

This hasn't put me off, though, as I figure Dell might have worked this one out by July. All the comments at the moment are marked as "6 monts ago", so fingers crossed :D

  • Dell is Hell... and the Michael Devill laughs at you.

  • how is yhe cpu gonna whine if its off thats just the transformer

  • thats not cpu whine:p its coming from the southbridge by the express card slot. cpur is on the left side btw

  • What is it then?

I have that same noise on my M1530. My friends Apple has it too. It gives me a head egg :(

  • I thought I had this problem with my XPS M1330 but it turned out just to be the hard-drive doing a virus scan. It's a crappy fujitsu one. Was hoping to get a Western Digital from Dell instead! :-)

The CPU Whine also happens to my old Inspiron 4100 with an Intel Pentium 3 1GHz "Tualatin". It's quite annoying but goes away when I do anything intensive like watching a DVD or editing a movie.

  • REFER TO: high pitched C2D CPU whine or beep noise.

The issue has been described as an epidemic. a scandle! I too have returned my 1330 over this. To date there is no complete fix, replacing the mother board or using rmclock only reduces the noise, if that. The problem is across every brand and model using C2D platform. Depending on the intensity usually only those younger than 30 can hear it. the sound can be produced by any of the following components: mosfets, induction coils, capacitors.

  • i just received my m1330 today and am hearing an annoying sound while the cpu is on on the right side of the keyboard, is this normal or is it f***ed up? also, did they replace your XPS or just fully refund yours?

  • Dell came out with a new motherboard that fixes the cpu whine problem.

Call dell and ask for a technician to come over and switch out your motherboard

  • That motherboard revision doesn't work. It actually makes things A LOT worse. Not to mention some of the technicians don't put the computer back together properly.

  • Yeah..I realized that too after I got the new motherboard

So I just ordered a replacement m1330..and the whine is still there

  • I also ordered a new m1330. The newest one is a lot more silent than all my previous m1330s. There's still a very faint whine. But after dealing with my 2.5 other M1330's I'm willing to count my blessings (and accept a credit for keeping a defective system) :P.

  • a lot of laptops do that

  • Hey, yeah my HP Pavilion Notebook makes the same sorta charging whine, although not as loud, also when the CPU is powered down, although i have solved this by disabling CPU C4 state in the BIOS.
