This Man has done everything and more to my soul music wise When I saw Soundgarden this last July I cried when they played 4 Of July. and for Audioslave their song Getaway Car just has this feeling of inner depth when your feeling low and out of your element that just makes you ponder on life. anything that Chris has done and will do is real whatever people think.
I don't think he's underrated, nor is Soundgarden. I think they appeal to certain audience and I notice that every SG fan I know has a higher than average IQ, more insightful than the norm. Sure you're going to get a pimply faced teenage with more to prove than good taste who's stay stupid things here, bring up Justin Beiber and shit, but the real fans are generally exceptionally cool people.
If you think a musician sucks then just say they suck. 'Sellout' is a meaningless fucking term. Have you ever got up earlier than you wanted to just to go to a job that you hate? That makes you a sellout, but in reality you're just doing what you gotta do. The term 'sellout' doesn't mean shit.
You know..honestly..I think that no matter how famous Chris has become, he's still underrated. Good guitar player, good lyricist, good looking, and great voice. He may have lost the voice a bit but he STILL KICKS ASS.
I think "you know my name" is a great song..it fits the james bond movie so well, it is one of the best theme songs I've ever heard. it's what introduced me to Chris Cornell, and then soundgarden/audioslave. His voice made the song..
While your statement is undoubtedly applicable in many cases and I don't happen to know Cornell personally, isn't it a bit unfair to judge him so based on this video? Shouldn't you consider, after all, that he is being interviewed and being ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT HIMSELF!!! It's not like he's got a YouTube channel on which he constantly raves about himself.... Does he?
I love when artists mature, change their style, and then are labeled a "sellout" by idiots...its very simple..when you are young, broke and struggling, you see the world one way..Then you mature(hopeully),make some money, maybe fall in love, marry, and have children..You THEN see the world in another way..its a natural progression..Am I the onlly person who sees this???
@trevLV I feel ya bro! I don't like Chris's new solo album but I wouldn't say that he sold out by making it. If anything he's doing exactly the opposite. A lot of people have looked down on his newest album because he wasn't playing hard rock. He played what he wanted to play not what others wanted him to play. That's the opposite of selling out.
Nope. I do. Furthermore, I enjoy when artists evolve and change and aren't afraid to stray from the path and push the envelope. I didn't like "Scream" either (although the live version of Long Gone with a band is cool) but I think he should absolutely feel free to do it and its hard not to appreciate his amazing and varied voice on anything he does.
@trevLV Just cuz u get older doesnt mean ur progressing. There is such a thing as a peak as an artist. I love all Chris's earlier stuff but when I hear his new stuff its less passionate and it sounds like an older guy in his comfort zone trying to stay relevant in pop music and I don't respect that. Make the kind of music you want, don't hire some cheesy mainstream producer for his name rec and shit out an album like "Scream." If that's progression, I better hurry up and build that time machine.
@Radz117 "Embarrassing"?.. Yeah,whatever..Maybe he should just make 5 records in a row, that sound EXACTLY like Badmotorfinger... We, as humans, dont adapt well to change. But, wouldnt it be a little boring. if everything sounded the same?..
Chris Cornell who would've thought he would turn out to be a complete clueless douchebag. He's like a Dave Grohl commercial sellout type, but way less talented or succesful
Without a doubt, Chris is one of the finest vocalists of our age. His range is outstanding, and his songwriting is fantastic. He does the low key, and then just rips the high notes. I do miss the "Jesus Christ" look though, but then hey, those were the good old days.
without henry in this interview, this is dry and boring. It makes me want to watch paint dry or quickly change the video. No one can possibly find this interesting. oooo...hh.. hold on.....
Shit, i just threw up on my keyboard. Thanks Chris. YOu bored me into throwing up my Linner... a sandwich and a chicken thigh. You dick.
And those people would be his Mom and maybe a guy that is trying to watch this video with his friends for the sole purpose of bragging that he knows Cornell from middle-school or something. Which are you?
chris cornell has just about the most perfect singing voice i've ever heard, 'slaves and bulldozers' is one of my all time favorites from him. he kicks ass in that song!
But when he does break out of his rusty cage and run - by experimenting within other genres - you don't like it. Too many people want their heroes frozen in time - or in other words, caged.
@clarefromscotland yesyesyesyesyesyes...Rock is my wife but I musically sleep around (LOL). I feel the binding to genres only suits the company men's percentage. I LIKED that tune he did with Timberland. Did I LOVE it ...no. But bombast seems to be a sign of the times...poo
wots with all the Cornell bashing here? I think its awesome he branching out into different genres. True artist dnt let themselves b put into boxes and limited, he's just expressing himself be happy for him. Every song he writes is poetry whether its Rusty Cage or Scream.
Odd. I've never heard him just speak casually until just now and it's changed my view of who I thought Chris Cornell is. I dont watch the Simpsons, ever, but I'd say his face is perfect to be a Simpsons character.
Sorry, chris is an incredible singer / frontman but this stuff is lame. its not a comparison to the old, just saying he is in a lame place musically right now.
i appreciate everything chris does. its music, its expressive, and it doesn't always have to come in the same form. his new stuff is great. for people who are long time followers, it obviously could be hard to see what he does in such a different light. his recent show in dallas, tx was great. everyone was blown away by the array of past and present music he played
yeah I prefer Chris's soundgarden stuff, etc.....but everyone is entitled to experiment a bit I suppose.....though when it's so drastic and below their capabilities, it is a shame...... And Corey Taylor definitely doesn't need to hide behind a mask, lol. He's fucking gorgeous. :) There's an example of someone who can delve into different music styles successfully w/out it being a disappointment.
Lol, "tickle his pickle"; I'll have to remember that one. Couldn't say it better though, everyone is entitled to express themselves in whatever way they choose, and I for one will be listening to Scream with an open mind.
@LumierexCosmic There's nowt wrong with having an opinion such as thine, for that is how we advanced as a planet in our own right. What is your opinion on the possibility of life elsewhere?
You, sir, are obviously not an artist of any kind. You absolutely make art for yourself first. An artist will do what they do whether they are paid or not. When you sell your soul to a record company and make the music they want and that the fans like you want, THEN you are a redundant sellout. This doesn't mean that a band shouldn't care about their fans, but you can't make music asking yourself "Is everybody gonna be cool with this or will they make fun of me?"
@RamAbballah that's totally not what i said.... any of that. you make it sound as if im talking about the jonas brothers or something. how do you sell albums and have fans and still be an artist.if you start to split hairs and concentrate on not being a sellout to that extreme dosnt that make it not art.the way you explained it, i guess your just better off writing poems in your bedroom without anyone ever having access to it.or make one album and not being able to afford a follow up.
Im a big Soundgarden fan. I love Chris. Even Soundgarden B sides sounded so great. Maybe Chris is just experimenting his music into different types right now and exploring new sounds. Hands All Over, Heretic, Flower, Cold Bitch, Searching with my Good Eye Closed, and many more Soundgarden songs rock. I miss the grunge Chris with the long hair and the boots lol.
Its not chris's fault. timbaland drugged him and brainwashed the poor. Sick bastard was going to make him his gay sex slave. Luckily chris was too bad ass to give in to timbaland's cock. don't worry, he'll fix this mess that mother fucker timbaland started.
I saw Soundgarden and Faith No More open for Guns n Roses in Germany. I think Corey Taylor of Slipknot is the only singer today who can compare to those guys.
but neway ur missing the point, i mean i agree, Chris cornell is a good singer, but heck, Corey Taylor plays in a band that cant even show their faces, and for good reasons.
Saying that Corey taylor is the only artist tht compares just takes the piss out of chris cornell, i mean seriously no-one likes Slipknot hahaha, Nu-Metal is dying.
i never said i didn't like him, i simply stated i don't like his current music, apart from his Stone Sour stuff like Through Glass.
Slipknot are just horrible though, like a pathetic mix of death metal and Nu-Metal. he cant scream so it makes slipknot look crap, plus they hve a band member that plays.... a keg. A fucking keg. Like WTF?!
"Yeah I'm Blah Blah from Slipknot and I play hectic Keg."
do me a favor and listen to Mudvayne, they are much better trust me
Chris always looks really uncomfortable in interviews. He's a smart guy and a hell of a singer, but there's something kind of...I donno. He looks like damaged goods to me.
Dont get me wrong, I still like the song but I have to prioritize my Cornell. My abbreviated Cornell collection is 21.4hours and I require 9 hours of sleep per day. Then you subtract time at work and you are left with an average of 65 hours/week to listen to Cornell per week. Only 65 hours at best! This is the biggest reason working sucks. In addition, its slavery and to paraphrase Cornell: society=work + a fools chance for retirement one day. Unfortunately if you do retire you are old and deaf.
These interviewers always ask about black hole sun. My body would go into complete shock if any other band was capable of coming up with this song. However, this is Chris Cornell, BHS is a song he could think up while taking a leak. All of the songs on Badmotorfinger, DOTU,ever other song on Superunknown, most on Louder Than Love, many bsides, even UltramegaOK songs trumph BlackHoleSun yet this song is always asked.
Listen to it as closely as possible. Once you completely understand it, it will never get old. But if you've already tried that, than I guess everyone has different taste..... But it is a shame. Possibly the best song of the 90's.
he did say it took him no time to write BHS on a trip going back to seattle...who cares, its still a badass song. But yeah Id hate if my whole legacy was based off of one song in the eyes of some ill informed interviewer
Same here! The only other vocalist I place in second is the similar style of Myles Kennedy from the band Alter Bridge. The two men are unmatched. God bless Washington state for those guys. :)
that's cool, he's a good candidate for a favorite. "superunknown" has always been one of the most amazing albums i've ever heard. cornell seems like a very artistic guy.
soundgarden started off as a sst band. listen to ultramega ok. you have your hispeed internet and STILL remain poorly or completely uninformed. its pathetic. they didnt have wikipedia in the 80s, yet knew more about music than mort today. sad truth
SST is just a name of a record label in Seattle. Soundgarden first released their album through 'subpop' and then their second through SST and then made a contract with A&M to release their best known albums such as Loudlove, Badmotorfinger, Superunknown and Down on the upside.
The mighty SST is NOT from Seattle. It was Greg Ginn's (of Blag Flag) label. They had a TON of legendary bands on there, Sachrine Trust, Minutemen, Husker Du, Meat Puppets, ALL, Sonic Youth (for a while), Dinosaur Jr., Gone etc.
your an idiot if you believe this. There is what 6+ billion people in the world... some of them are making some fucking amazing music... don't consume corporate shit.. look a little and discover "underground" music
he is so fuckin' HOT!! unreal xD

make up your mind chris, are you drunkmumbling or are you shouting?!
stigandr 3 years ago
I doubt he can act, but Chris Cornell looks a hell of a lot more like Tony Stark than Robert Downy, Jr. ever did. Imagine Cornell playing Iron Man!
HellKnightX2 3 years ago
Chris Cornell IS Tony Stark.

Chris Cornell & Mike Patton are two of the most powerful singers we have...they can sing their asses off. Wish there were more like them.
SgtTravisBickle 3 years ago 4
I saw Soundgarden and Faith No More open for Guns n Roses in Germany. I think Corey Taylor of Slipknot is the only singer today who can compare to those guys.
theropingeffect 3 years ago
lol, that is a very irrelevant statement, i mean theres shitloads of good singers out there. But why corey taylor?
he plays shithouse music.
Jyiannaros 3 years ago
Whhy do you have to say shit so much?
theropingeffect 3 years ago
i said it twice, thats hardly any at all,
but neway ur missing the point, i mean i agree, Chris cornell is a good singer, but heck, Corey Taylor plays in a band that cant even show their faces, and for good reasons.
Saying that Corey taylor is the only artist tht compares just takes the piss out of chris cornell, i mean seriously no-one likes Slipknot hahaha, Nu-Metal is dying.
Jyiannaros 3 years ago 2
Why don't you like Corey Taylor?
theropingeffect 3 years ago
Why don't i like Corey Taylor?
i never said i didn't like him, i simply stated i don't like his current music, apart from his Stone Sour stuff like Through Glass.

I liked BHS "back in the day", but I haven't listened to it in years; I can't stomach it; it's too damn mawkish.
SuperDoggy99 3 years ago

All of the songs on Badmotorfinger, DOTU,ever other song on Superunknown, most on Louder Than Love, many bsides, even UltramegaOK songs trumph BlackHoleSun yet this song is always asked.
incessantmace 3 years ago 2
The more I listen to BHS the more I hate it, personally.
GeneralSobchak 3 years ago
Listen to it as closely as possible. Once you completely understand it, it will never get old. But if you've already tried that, than I guess everyone has different taste..... But it is a shame. Possibly the best song of the 90's.
very1337 3 years ago
I've listened to it plenty of times and I used to like it, but nowadays if it's on I'll skip it.
GeneralSobchak 3 years ago
he did say it took him no time to write BHS on a trip going back to seattle...who cares, its still a badass song. But yeah Id hate if my whole legacy was based off of one song in the eyes of some ill informed interviewer

Chris Cornell is my favourite (living) vocalist in rock. His voice, and his songwriting are unmatched for me.
LoPan99 3 years ago 6
Same here! The only other vocalist I place in second is the similar style of Myles Kennedy from the band Alter Bridge. The two men are unmatched. God bless Washington state for those guys. :)
eannelayomay 3 years ago
You mean the guy from that movie "Rock Star"?
"Stand up and shout!!"
What a terrible comparison!

I think the referral was to Myles Kennedy in the song "Find the Real". Check it out on my channel or on YouTube direct:

that's cool, he's a good candidate for a favorite. "superunknown" has always been one of the most amazing albums i've ever heard. cornell seems like a very artistic guy.

Guys, don't forget Eddie Vedder, Cobain, and Layne Staley.
Amazing vocalists came out of the Grunge era.

soundgarden started off as a sst band. listen to ultramega ok. you have your hispeed internet and STILL remain poorly or completely uninformed. its pathetic. they didnt have wikipedia in the 80s, yet knew more about music than mort today. sad truth

wgat does 'sst' mean?

SST is just a name of a record label in Seattle. Soundgarden first released their album through 'subpop' and then their second through SST and then made a contract with A&M to release their best known albums such as Loudlove, Badmotorfinger, Superunknown and Down on the upside.
chanmee26 3 years ago
The mighty SST is NOT from Seattle. It was Greg Ginn's (of Blag Flag) label. They had a TON of legendary bands on there, Sachrine Trust, Minutemen, Husker Du, Meat Puppets, ALL, Sonic Youth (for a while), Dinosaur Jr., Gone etc.
SST is from the South Bay of LA
LAnotBoston 3 years ago 2
see? you ask me? instead, you could just google 'sst' and learn for yourself.
