This is a beautiful song ..... it was written by the Sherman Brothers who wrote most of the songs for Disney movies back then. Although Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was not A Disney movie, Dick Van Dyke recommended them and rightly so. I believe it was their incredible song writing that made Mary Poppins such a memorable classic. All of the songs in Mary Poppins are written by them.
It may be worth bearing in mind that Mr Van Dyke admitted to being so drunk during the filming of Mary Poppins that he still has no recollection of singing one of the songs.
If this song wasn't written by by the sherman brothers, I would think that this would be a song gilmour would write and record. I mean it sounds like his style of chord structure.

ok let me stop you all there, I am a massive Floyd fan but even so it is important to not be blinkered by this and take each song with its own individual merit, Gilmour singing this song is just embarassing and should be forgotten
For those of you who are comparing David Gilmour's version to Dick Van Dyke's original...please don't. You miss the point. The original was the original. It is what it is. It's a wonderful song sung by a father (in the movie) to his children. David Gilmour paid homage to the song by singing his own version. I am sure he did not intend to do a better version...just his own. Gilmour does a great job. Both versions are sweet, heartfelt and meaningful. Ok?
Having watched this a gazillion times, yes the Cello is haunting but the production is sublime. The female vocals come in at just the right time and the double bass is perfectly understated. I wasn't at this gig, was this song the fimal encore? If so what can you say?
So freaking cool, Dick Van Dyke would be proud. I'm sure everyone knows but for those who don't it from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang when he puts the kids to sleep, Dick Van Dyke does it perfectly!!!
This version is very different though very likable , thumbs up !

eerie, beautiful, tear-jerker just like it was in the movie....but he can sing a hell of a lot better than Dick van Dyke.
