I honestly like the original lyrics better. However, I am glad that Brian was able to finish this project. It's nice to hear a contrast in sound and to fully understand the vision that he and Van Dyke had back in the 60s. It's a shame that mental illness drugs took Brian down in his prime. (TRUE! Mike Love didn't help, but it was the aforementioned that really did him in!) The world missed out on some unique music. At least, we get to experience it today, in some form! Thanks Brian!
The mysteries of the Smile project have in themselves taken on a life of their own and surpassed the original content of the music encompassing a drugged fragmentation from which there would be no escape. The music depicts a man with a troubled mind. The pressures, and the family conflicts all combined to propel him into an abyss from which there would be no escape.
The project is as fragmentatious as ever when Brian decided to experiment with music and experiment with life !!
I think it's safe to say that the definitive version of this is on the "Smile Sessions" with Carl singing, the original lyrics and most of the extra bits that you hear from this one.
I'm partial to the original version, but there are parts of this recording I like better. The piano interlude in the middle and I like that Brain didn't fade out the Theremin so quickly at the end this time, because that is too cool!
There is no original "Smile" album. The original project fizzled out. Many of the songs from the unfinished project were subsequently released on other Beach Boys collections (e.g. "Cabinessence", "Heroes and Villains" and "Surf's Up"). It's not possible to recapture the attitudes that Brian and the Boys had in the 60's. Brian's "SMiLE" release a few years back sounded great, but it lacked the true 60's vibe. A new Beach Boys version of SMiLE would be pure commercialism. Love the BB as they are!
@ChargingWildebeest Yes there WAS an original "SMiLE" "album". It sprang forth from Brian Wilson's (way before his time brilliant) mind and put to tape and realized...way back around 1966...minus the vocals, and was subsequently released (with vocals) in 2004. (Thanks to the dumb arsed Mike Love, who was so goddam musically stuck on formulated "Surf Music", the "Beach Boys" couldn't complete it way back in 1966.) You OBVIOUSLY do not know SHIT about this MASTERPIECE, DO you?
@donaldinks Whoa there, Nellie! As you pointed out, most of the vocals were not added to the tracks... Even if internal strife was a factor, and it was... the album was NEVER completed in the 60s. Brian's ideas would have been more socially/musically relevant at that time, and perhaps influential upon other artists, and even the BB's future sound. What contribution would Carl (and maybe Dennis) have made to the vocals? We'll never know what SMiLE would've sounded like in the 60s.
The ORIGINAL Smile album comes out November 1, 2011. It will come in 3 versions: as a standard 2CD set, a Vinyl double album and a deluxe boxset featuring the album and extras on both double vinyl and five CDs as well as two vinyl 45s and an exclusive book. (Info from Wikipedia) My mind is blown and I can't WAIT for this to come out. The original Smile album release is going to be better than Christmas.
Brain Wilson Produce Smiles completely all on his own, He is a fucking Genius, buy and listen to the complete album it has nothing to do with beach surf tunes nothing! In 1966 Brain was in bad shape with all his break downs, and her introduce the music he was working on and the beach boy band said no! Smiles was suppose to released 1 year before Sgt Peppers Lonely Hart club band by Beatles, but RCA Shelved the Album for 25 years, Brain is the biggest musical secret of our times, Fucking Awesome.
ahhh! ......Mountain Winery here I come!.....so stoked to see Brian in August....I'll prob cry during the opening song hahah.....I seem to do that in the presence of musical Gods.
In 1966, with the original's release, it instantly became my 52-year old mom's favorite popular song.
As many have posted:
When he re-recorded "Good Vibrations" for this 2004 version of Smile, Wilson's wife, Melinda, suggested he use the original lyrics written by Tony Asher.
Wilson had first enlisted Pet Sounds lyricist Tony Asher's help, to which Beach Boys' Mike Love supplied the final version. However, Asher's initial draft contained the actual phrase "I'm picking up good vibrations."
I like this version better than the first. The Brian Wilson Band put in those "hum dee dum" parts at the 2min 50sec_ish mark. I like it better. The live version on Smile is full of the kind of energy that the current line up of the Beach Boys are lacking. Brians Band is Great!
@WhiteUniteorDie it was a beach boy album that brian wilson quit on due to his depression or something like that....im not exactly sure, its probably the best beach boy album tho
@dan32113,When Brian Wilson heard sg pepper he suffered a nervous breakdown, and he completed this album in 2004 thanks to that,Ps,if you havent heard sg pepper in mono you havent heard it.third those ideas were of The beatles in that time frame the beatles were more involved in recording, and i forgot to mention that John Lennon introduced backward recording with an accident being high in canabis, and use it
@Yoganao I've heard some outtakes from the session for this song from 1966 and this was originally part of the song. No idea why it was taken out though.
I just feel like Carl Wilson had possibly the most beautiful voice in the world and Brian writing the songs and him singing them just made for some of the greatest songs ever recorded..not to take away from this version..it is just how I feel..
At first I preferred the "original" BB version, but the more I hear this version, the more I come to appreciate it as the original vision and intent of the song. Plus it makes a perfect coda/epilogue to the rest of Smile.
@theseer27 dunno man i kinda prefer this version, but maybe that's because i'm sorta a kid who never grew up with the beach boys and only got into them in the last few years after growing up past a rebellious adolescence in which i believed this band and brian wilson were lame dudes. what a fool i was!

@MattHatter Not to be a complete downer, but "SMiLE" was released in 2004. HOWEVER, thank you for telling us that it'll be re-released in a new format. *is getting the box set*
@gurufuk You mean you got the set? Oh my gosh, isn't it out of this world?! It's just insanely good. The sessions are awesome, slightly tedious at first listen, but AWESOME.
Brian Wilson gave me a whole new outlook on life thanks to his music. As a musician and as a human being, I owe him the world for the impact and influence he and his music have left on me.
@PrimativeToast Thanks for your brilliance. "Your" denotes possession, so I'm sure you are (you're) aware that you left out the object, as well as the verb. I'd tell you that your mother said to say "Hello," but we both know that she hates you.
@JamesA46 You're totally right. I love how around 1:00, the lower bass line is in the center channel and the high harmony parts are in right/left. God Only Knows is probably the bet pop song ever written, but this one is certainly top-10.
@drgonzo90 I didn't fully appreciate the genius of the man until years later. Brian Wilson may be our modern day Beethoven. Even the Beatles were helped in breaking new ground from their new producer who was grounded in the classics and influenced John Lennon and McCartney's music later in their careers. As for Brian Wilson. He's like a journeyman carpentar. He can already see or hear the finished product in his mind before he starts. Then he goes about the chore of making it a reality.
So what's all this "your gay" stuff, anyway? My gay what? "You are" is contracted into "you're", not "your." Every time someone says, "Your gay," it shores up my intellectual superiority, whatever my opinions. Anyway, Wilson was the only decent enigma of a peek into another universe that was even encountered on a quantum level, musically, from the 60's up until some split in the late 70's, that lead to Prince and then on to BJM. Learn this: different isn't always better or worse. Same is bad.
This is good, but I believe - and always will believe - that calling Brian Wilson a "genius" is a little bit over the top. I mean, come on. A "genius"? Let's not do a disservice to actual geniuses by lumping in an adequate songsmith with them.
@orchidtender He's a musical genius. In interviews he sounds really dull, but when you get him to sit down to a piano he will blow your mind. He's not wall street smart. He probably would just give his wallet away to a "wallet inspector" but he IS a self taught musical genius.
@orchidtender well now, it all depends on your definition of genius. And perhaps your definition of genius is no better than your definition of "songsmith"? Wilson rewired American rock.
Why, yes, I'm sure that one could argue that "genius" has a scientific definition, versus, "songsmith", which is just gay, and not even a real word. Kill yourself, before you kill others.
@orchidtender I am sure that the pejorative use of a "sacred" word marks me as a hater of homosexuals, but I am not sure why, when several of my friends are in same sex relationships. After all, they may be gay, but they are cool, not gay, whether they happen to feel gay or not, at the time.
@phallusbravo Okay, okay, wait. You do know that gay only has negative connotations because people who don't like gay people decided to use that term about anything girly, and by extension, bad?
It's not like gay meant stupid and girly and then gay people were like "let's name ourselves after a word that means stupid and girly"
@orchidtender listen i"m English, but without a doubt Wilson is a "genius" it all comes from his own mind, all the production etc! People say oh The Beatles, but take away George Martin, who was just as important as Lennon & Macca, lets be honest Wilson has more musical talent than the scousers! FACT
@generalJEANpaul NO NO NO! Charlie wrote "Bluebirds Over The Mountain" And he only knew Dennis Wilson. Go back and tell yer grampa that he lied to you...
WOW! Thanks for posting. SInce I *was* indeed looking for the 2004 remade version, wanted to check how Wilson re-arranged it. WOW! He didn't want to "modernize" it at all. Thank you Mr. Wilson, and I hope all is well with you! (Which was the case without any doubt when he did his awesome Roxy gigs in 2001/02)
Anyone can be a Beatles fan. It takes a special kind of music lover to dig on Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. If you love both the Beatles and Brian Wilson and The B.Boys you have the market cornered on coolness, but in a good way, not in a douchebag way.
Only a douchebag tries to start a childish ewetoube war around Brian's music about how the Beatles are better.
You don't see Brian Wilson walking around talking smack about P.Mac or P. Mac crusin the town at night putting up flyers Bashing BW?
@fundy76 You're an idiot, music isn't about "being cool". You can even like lady gaga, and not only because you want to be cool. ALL MUSIC have to be dig.
just read about this album on metacritic...but really: reviewing music doesnt make any sense to me..because it depends on your taste of music how good the music is
@buddyguy340 yeah..but i think music isnt that "reviewable" like games or DVDs....music is music..and it depends on your taste..there is no content to review like games have..and i mean graphics or acting skills or quality etc.
@pablotabloz The lead singer sounds odd - like not enough breath support or something, no stability & strength & like he's just not quite good enough to sing on pitch 100% of the time, which is certainly not the case in the recording I'm used to.
@jhssuthrnmama : WEll yes if you consider Brian sings this and he is like, 63 yrs old here and after living half his life in bed eating only LSD, and also you have to compare this to the original singer Carl Wilson's whose voice was the finest in the band
@AllBobsAllTheTime These are actually Tony Asher's lyrics (he wrote most of Pet Sounds). However, it's credited B. Wilson/T. Asher/M. Love because they kept the first line of Mike's lyrics.
@ElYanMan Good Vibrations is probably the best song ever written. If you do not agree then what is in your opinion probably the best song ever written? I use the word probably, because remember its only our opinions.
...you can spend all day or a lifetime slamming one and praising the other OR praising one and slamming the other, but at the end of the day...or a lifetime only ONE thing remains crystal CLEAR.....there IS no comparison.
This whole album has really grown on me. A remarkable achievement, and this song sort of encapsulates so much of what the rest of the album is. It's an album that has depth, meaning, humour and fantastic melodies. Some of the songs from the ditched project in the sixties are even surpassed by Brian working solo.
I cannot believe there are people (critics and reviewers) who actually claim this album is 'not that great' saying that people 'made it great' in their minds because of it's mystery, Brian's illness and some mythical 'aura' it has gained over the years. They say it's overblown and simply not such a masterpiece everyone think it is. I say to those jealous creeps (cause that's what they are), to try to write such a coherent and complex work themselves.
@Dodo251 Let's see them put their hearts and minds into an album like Brian did. It's obvious they know nothing about what it means to be a self-taught musician without a day of musical education who has the ability to create such wonderful multi-layered music. Try taking the album apart, try listening to all the sounds and beautiful melodies and harmonies Brian has incorporated into every single song. Smile not a master-piece? I piss on their reviews and obvious lack of musical knowledge.
@BassVirtual They don't have to like it, it doesn't mean they have to slander and pretend they're all-knowing while the only thing they're actually doing is lying out of jealousy.
Dizy heights John Lennon solo...Imagine, Give Peace a Chance, Love, Mind Games, God, Instant Karma, #9 Dreams, Remember, Watching the Wheels, Mother, Isolation, Oh My Love, Old Drt Road, just to name a few.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the only good song of the beach boys is good vibrations,,,,,and thats it,,,,they pretty much repeat the same stuff over and over,,,,beatles not,,,,they went from pure rock to different kinds of rock....never was perfect but innovative yes.....john lennon is the MOST important figure of the modern music
hmmm.... No Pet Sounds... no Revolver, Sgt Pepper, White Album or Abbey Road.. Hell that album alone changed the music industry forever!
Also check out Sunflower...
Also Beatles solo (bar George Harrison's All things must pass) sucks... sorry but Lennon never hit any of the dizy heights as a solo artist as he did with The Beatles...
Yeah, he's a filthy troll. I've seen his vile comments on almost every Beach Boys video. He's a mindless nutcase. Brian was and still is a musical genius and I have to say I admire and love him just as much as I love the Beatles. Absolutely no need to compare. Cheers!
Well, I am crazy about Brian Wilson and Pet Sounds is one of the best albums ever. BUT. But The Beatles' Revolver, White Album, Rubber Soul, Sgt. Peppers and Abbey Road are in the same league. The amount of Beatles' albums, summed up here, says enough. The Beach Boys made one absolute gem and a couple of good albums, but also a lot of shite over the years. The Beatles came up with five classic albums, a couple of great ones and NO dissapointments in just eight years.
of course the beatles were looky to have as much freedom and support as they did. Whereas Brian Wilson had that twat Mike Love on his ass all the time. He coulda made some seriously incredible albums with Carl, Dennis and Al
That's true. Although John and Paul also had different views, but they were both geniuses and of course, Mike is not. I would give anything to hear Smile as it was intended at the time.
Simply genius.

That Capitol Music Crap being released as "SMiLE" is nothing but an attempt to shore up their 4th quarter corporate earnings...
counting on dumb arsed suckers to buy it (and, yes, they will).
It's a SHAME these people are still longing for something that couldn't BE way back in 1966 (thanks a lot, Mike Love).
Brian Wilson NAILED his creation in 2004 and finally accomplished what he set out to do.
GET OVER IT and enjoy Brian Wilson's MASTERPIECE.

This is good, but I believe - and always will believe - that calling Brian Wilson a "genius" is a little bit over the top. I mean, come on. A "genius"? Let's not do a disservice to actual geniuses by lumping in an adequate songsmith with them.
orchidtender 1 year ago
@orchidtender
He was a pop genius, let's put it like that.
degree7 1 year ago
@orchidtender He's a musical genius. In interviews he sounds really dull, but when you get him to sit down to a piano he will blow your mind. He's not wall street smart. He probably would just give his wallet away to a "wallet inspector" but he IS a self taught musical genius.
87btran 1 year ago 2
@orchidtender well now, it all depends on your definition of genius. And perhaps your definition of genius is no better than your definition of "songsmith"? Wilson rewired American rock.
Why, yes, I'm sure that one could argue that "genius" has a scientific definition, versus, "songsmith", which is just gay, and not even a real word. Kill yourself, before you kill others.
phallusbravo 1 year ago
@phallusbravo wow, did you really just use "gay" as a pejorative term? That speaks volumes.
orchidtender 1 year ago
@orchidtender I am sure that the pejorative use of a "sacred" word marks me as a hater of homosexuals, but I am not sure why, when several of my friends are in same sex relationships. After all, they may be gay, but they are cool, not gay, whether they happen to feel gay or not, at the time.
phallusbravo 1 year ago
@phallusbravo Okay, okay, wait. You do know that gay only has negative connotations because people who don't like gay people decided to use that term about anything girly, and by extension, bad?
It's not like gay meant stupid and girly and then gay people were like "let's name ourselves after a word that means stupid and girly"

87btran 1 year ago
@orchidtender listen i"m English, but without a doubt Wilson is a "genius" it all comes from his own mind, all the production etc! People say oh The Beatles, but take away George Martin, who was just as important as Lennon & Macca, lets be honest Wilson has more musical talent than the scousers! FACT

Mac crusin the town at night putting up flyers Bashing BW?
fundy76 1 year ago
@fundy76 You're an idiot, music isn't about "being cool". You can even like lady gaga, and not only because you want to be cool. ALL MUSIC have to be dig.
NoxxPie 1 year ago
@NoxxPie
Hey man, I see your point but I think you totally missed mine.
The 'coolness' part was sarcasm in relation to Beatles/Beach boy wars on youtube. Pay a little more good attention next time :P
No need to call names.

just read about this album on metacritic...but really: reviewing music doesnt make any sense to me..because it depends on your taste of music how good the music is
Wurstlol 1 year ago 2
@Wurstlol you could say the same about DVDs, books, movies, and video games.
buddyguy340 1 year ago
@buddyguy340 yeah..but i think music isnt that "reviewable" like games or DVDs....music is music..and it depends on your taste..there is no content to review like games have..and i mean graphics or acting skills or quality etc.

Same tune, but totally different song. What gives?
pablotabloz 1 year ago
@pablotabloz The lead singer sounds odd - like not enough breath support or something, no stability & strength & like he's just not quite good enough to sing on pitch 100% of the time, which is certainly not the case in the recording I'm used to.
jhssuthrnmama 1 year ago
@jhssuthrnmama : WEll yes if you consider Brian sings this and he is like, 63 yrs old here and after living half his life in bed eating only LSD, and also you have to compare this to the original singer Carl Wilson's whose voice was the finest in the band

Are these Van Dyke Parks' lyrics??
AllBobsAllTheTime 1 year ago
@AllBobsAllTheTime These are actually Tony Asher's lyrics (he wrote most of Pet Sounds). However, it's credited B. Wilson/T. Asher/M. Love because they kept the first line of Mike's lyrics.

Dodo251 1 year ago 4
@Dodo251 Let's see them put their hearts and minds into an album like Brian did. It's obvious they know nothing about what it means to be a self-taught musician without a day of musical education who has the ability to create such wonderful multi-layered music. Try taking the album apart, try listening to all the sounds and beautiful melodies and harmonies Brian has incorporated into every single song. Smile not a master-piece? I piss on their reviews and obvious lack of musical knowledge.

the only good song of the beach boys is good vibrations,,,,,and thats it,,,,they pretty much repeat the same stuff over and over,,,,beatles not,,,,they went from pure rock to different kinds of rock....never was perfect but innovative yes.....john lennon is the MOST important figure of the modern music
04116404 1 year ago
hmmm.... No Pet Sounds... no Revolver, Sgt Pepper, White Album or Abbey Road.. Hell that album alone changed the music industry forever!
Also check out Sunflower...
Also Beatles solo (bar George Harrison's All things must pass) sucks... sorry but Lennon never hit any of the dizy heights as a solo artist as he did with The Beatles...
gideonblackman 1 year ago
Hmm no Rubber Soul, no Pet Sounds. Brian said it himself on the Pet Sounds documentary so next time, make a full list of who influenced who.
Dodo251 1 year ago 4
@Dodo251
I wasn't having a go at The Beatles, it was a response to 04116404's comment that the Beach Boys had never ever done anything worth while...
But yeah Rubber Soul is an awesome album as was its predecessor A Hard Days Night!
And Revolver ROCKS!
gideonblackman 1 year ago 4
Yeah, he's a filthy troll. I've seen his vile comments on almost every Beach Boys video. He's a mindless nutcase. Brian was and still is a musical genius and I have to say I admire and love him just as much as I love the Beatles. Absolutely no need to compare. Cheers!

Dodo251 1 year ago
Well, I am crazy about Brian Wilson and Pet Sounds is one of the best albums ever. BUT. But The Beatles' Revolver, White Album, Rubber Soul, Sgt. Peppers and Abbey Road are in the same league. The amount of Beatles' albums, summed up here, says enough. The Beach Boys made one absolute gem and a couple of good albums, but also a lot of shite over the years. The Beatles came up with five classic albums, a couple of great ones and NO dissapointments in just eight years.
Kanarie1973 1 year ago
of course the beatles were looky to have as much freedom and support as they did. Whereas Brian Wilson had that twat Mike Love on his ass all the time. He coulda made some seriously incredible albums with Carl, Dennis and Al
Emerald1234S 1 year ago 4
@Emerald1234S
That's true. Although John and Paul also had different views, but they were both geniuses and of course, Mike is not. I would give anything to hear Smile as it was intended at the time.
