Wasn't this part of the "Don't Look Back" series of shows in NYC? I saw Slint play all of their "Spiderland" album a couple weeks before this. Epic. I remember wanting to stay for this show too - but alas, only so much vacation time...
This was part of the "Don't Look Back" series. This was the very first one, in Chicago. This was the first time that Sonic Youth performed Daydream Nation in its entirety on American soil. They had played a concert in Italy the week before which was, I suppose, truly the first.
Unfortunately Slint did play just before SY, and I was nearly bored to tears.
what amazing camerawork! i love the blurry swoopy colours with the occasion glimpse of thurston or kim jumping around, that's how I remember all the sonics shows I've seen, to the extent that I remember them at all, lets face it my memory just isn't what it used to be.
i wish my crappy computer speakers went up to eleven
This is probably my favorite Sonic Youth song. Seriously, this song rules on so many levels, and thanks to our friend quartertonality, we get to see it live. Sounds just as great. Thanks for the post mi amigo!
"...or the city is gonna kick our ass." Thurston is my savior. And an amazing show, Hyperstation was mind blowing. Was Thurston channeling his inner Tom Verlaine here?
I hear ya man. I was back behind all the crazyness, and even the small amount of lunacy that I had to deal with was too much. It was complete and total frantic moshing up there in the front and center. I would have had to leave myself. It just gets to a point where you aren't enjoying the show anymore and you are panicking because you can't breathe and nobody is watching out for you, or can watch out for you.
I don't like to spread hate on a sonic youth comment thing, but there is nothing worse than wankers who stand still at gigs, festivals whatever. If you're going to do that stand at the back.
'you are panicking because you can't breathe' - such shit. I've been in a dizzee rascal pit where people were getting, honestly, stamped on and their phones' nicked - that's bad because it creates a bad atmosphere, but just dancing or moshing about doesn't it's like a participatory event, standing still creates bad atmosphere. It's a rock concert. Do what everyone around you is doing and you no longer feel like an out-of-place, standing-still cunt.
Let's go from one extreme to the next.I'm not advocating standing still like were at some lecture. All that I was saying was that when you have a crowd that big you lose the ability to control yourself, the crowd begins to take over and personally that makes it somewhat less enjoyableWhen I have to concentrate on trying to stay on my feet and I can't pay attention to the fucking music then the show is not as enjoyable for me.I've seen Lightning Bolt live, I know what it is like Cunt.
the shoving was nothing you fool. i'm pretty sure i cascaded myself a good 15 feet in once we got moving. who the isht wants to watch sonic youth standing still. feel the vibe and go w/ it.
I wasn't in the front, but I can sympathize with the people who were freaked out. It was a great show and I enjoyed it from where I was. I've gone to a lot of shows and I've never been at one where people were SO aggressively pushing people to get closer to the stage. That wasn't about dancing - it was about treating other people like obstacles. At one point I thought it was going to be like that Who concert when 11 people died in the rush to the stage.
yeah, creepytrunkman. i'm pissed off at you for being pissed off at people "shoving." how boring would that show have been if people just stood there all bored and motionless. get a clue.
I like how when the band starts totally rockin' out and jumping the audience does the same. Looks like so much fun -- thanks for giving me a little taste of what my show's gonna be like ;) OH and I'm glad you got some Lee in there.
Interesting, the evolution of lyrics (by way of explanation) over the coarse of years.

Honestly, this video blows my mind, because it's the only live video that I've seen thus far that makes me almost feel like I'm actually there.

general consensus is, things are gonna be pretty bad at the front so you've got to find a place in the crowd that youre comfortable with

you guys have no idea what it was liek up there.
i was by far not the only person to leave the crowd.
there was no flow to go with.
i was just getting shoved into other peoples backs and practically being suffocated.
where were you guys in the crowd?

thank you so much for agreeing with me.
im glad that someone on these message boards realizes what seperates a sonic youth concert from a black flag concert.
it actually got to the point where some random chick helped my girlfriend out while i followed.
