As dexluther said - it's like drowning. Sometimes the message isn't there. When I was training to dive, an incident caused me to have a panic attack (the only one I've ever had) underwater. We were within safe limits so the instructor took me to the surface as fast as possible, having to 'purge' my regulator all the way up just so I could breathe without swallowing any water. At the surface I thrashed around, hit him by accident and freaked. My brain didn't even register that he was helping.

to everyone saying that they should have said that they were there to help, that would not help at all. the psychological state of someone kidnapped for long periods of time falls apart and deteriorates. it would be like during WW2, there was a raid on a prison camp, and even though the soldiers said they were there to help the POW's, the prisoners fought back and refused to leave.

You try staying calm when a bunch of masked gunmen come at you while you're stoned. They didn't announce their presence because there might still be hostiles in the building, a gunfight in such close quarters poses a high risk of civilian casualties. This isn't a fucking game.
