Why is it that so many people think power windows is a bad album? Ever song on it is not only classic but some of their most heartfelt and emotional work. Why people chose to bash it is beyond me.
really Rush is so underated , why ? why so many bands are considerated as bigger than them ? i cant understand this , and this wasnt even their best album , moving pictures was one of the best albums in music histroy
@richis404 Seriously? Power Windows beats the HELL out of Moving Pictures. I find Moving Pictures to be rather bland, actually, compared to works on Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, and Counterparts...
@thanecrios Moving Pictures is the zenith of Rush's talent. Alongside Permanent Waves it sat between 2 different Rush eras: After the prog rock epics such as Hemispheres and 2112 but before the onset of synth as heard in Signals/GuP/Windows - don't get me wrong; great albums in their own right but pale a little next to Moving Pictures.... Limemlight/Camera Eye/Barchetta - classics!
@mikemcd1971 I've listened Moving Pictures to death. Seriously. Side one is absolutely boring at this point. When I think about it and compare it to other prog that I listen to, Moving Pictures, particularly side one, seems absolutely drab. It doesn't have any of the excitement that tons of other Rush puts into me. Even when I first listened to it, after Tom Sawyer I was like "..that's it? That's the "best" Rush song? blaaahhh"
@thanecrios I wouldn't dismiss anyone not liking Moving Pictures - you're right, there's plenty more to like about Rush and all their albums prior to Hold Your Fire are great in their own right: I personally list Grand Designs, Between the Wheels and Digital Man amongst my favourite tracks alongside Hemispheres from the earlier albums. Moving Pictures simply blends the best bits of Rush together. I admit, it takes time and is a "grower" - but boring it ain't!
@mikemcd1971 Moving Pictures? A grower? Since when is ANY album as mainstream and commercialized as Moving Pictures a grower? Side one is fully of catchy riffs like much of the mainstream music at the time. In fact, I always felt that Tom Sawyer could have been a song by The Police if it was toned down a bit. I dunno, I just think that it's simply playing off all of the success that Permanent Waves had, because Moving Pictures is the only album that is noticeably similar to another Rush album.
@thanecrios Fair comment: Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves are very similar. Tom Sawyer could be a Police track in disguise, I take your point; I always think that about Vital Signs too! To be more specific, Camera Eye and YYZ may be the "growers" on the album. Despite being mainstream, it was the last album where synths took a backseat accompaniement rather than coming to the fore like they did Signals onwards. By Hold your Fire synths had took such a hold that I find that album unlistenable
@thanecrios No it doesn't, seriously. Power Windows was good but Moving Pictures was epic rock. Just hearing Limelight shows how classic that album was not to mention Red Barchetta. Obviously Tom Sawyer was great but that whole album was awsome. Powe Windows was good but not classic, more 80s synth pop than Moving Pictures.
@thanecrios And in my honest opinion, I know MP was a big hit for them but Counterparts charted higher and they don't even really include much from Signals (save for Subdivisions) forward to Test For Echo on their live setlists anymore! TERRITORIES NEEDS TO COME BACK
@richis404 ya but it was one album that everyone thinks there a rush fan if they know the famous songs aka limelight tom sawyer red barchetta yyz etc and i liked there more progressive music hemispheres is an awsome album but ya your right rush is underated
@zackjp moving pictures was my very first rush album and i never heard any song of it before. I found them on a sampler ,there was the song countdown on it from signals and i heard this song again and again then i wanted to hear something more from them and decided to buy me a whole album of them. For me in the early 80s were the best music, so i read the released date on the backside of the cover 1981 and so i choose moving pictures and i bought a masterpiece
@richis404 hmm we'll i didn't grow up in the 80's more like 2000's which really suck but in november 2007 went to a used cd shop i bought a the who cd and a farewell to kings listened to it every once in a while then started looking up on you tube vids and then near the end of grade 7 which was 2009 i bought rush retrospective 1 and listened for half the summer bought exit stage left in august 09 and rush gold then started buying ALOT of cd's now have over 20 cd's 1 vinyl and 3 cassetes RUSH
@zackjp the reason why i told you this story is to let you know that moving pictures isnt my favorite rush album because its maybe their most famous.Btw i was born in the 80s so lets say that i grow up in the 90s and i found out about rush in 1998 i think
@zackjp That's awesome. For me, one day I decided to put in my MOM'S moving pictures cd. I loved every song. I moved onto greatest hits and that opened it up for me big time hearing Fly by night and 2112. I bought A Farewell to Kings, Signals, All the World's a Stage, and Counterparts all in the same day. They are now my gods. Growing up in the 2000's does suck with today's modern music. Luckily Rush is still going.
@VODMagazine I agree; the DVD does answer a lot of questions about Rush. Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins summed it up when he said "someone has to explain why they're [Rush] there - Led Zeppelin has been over-explained". It's true - I love Led Zep aswell but it is astonishing that Rush don't get a fraction of the publicity yet they easily match them musically and are not far behind in platinum albums either! Well said Bill.
@richis404 Because the average music listener wants to wank off to Britney Spears, Katy Perry, or Justin Beiber. They don't get it. Luckily for us, we do!
@heashon2000 ok,but i wanted to compare rush with bands like ,pink floyd ,the rolling stones, genesis ...etc....all bands who are more famous and succesful than them
@richis404 I know what you mean but they have just been awarded the Living Legends award at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards in London and it was on the BBC :-) And I saw their "Beyond the lighted stage" at a giant cineplex in Central Europe recently. As Geddy Lee said in the documentary, They´re the biggest cult band in the world.
@richis404 The reasons are simple. One, their songs rarely conform to the standard length and level of intelligence that the radio stations want to feed out to the masses. Two, the trio would rather quit the music scene and take up plumbing than compromise their art. It's my understanding that 'Tom Sawyer' was the one song they ever made that was specifically targeted for mass media radio. Even then, it's still a fantastic piece of work ;)
@whitliggett yes look i got many of answers like this because the people misunderstand me a little bit.I compare rush with pink floyd for example and not with the pop shit from the radio and in compare to pink floyd rush is clearly underrated.
@alembicbassguy Power windows is pure harmony! :) I say this because i many people said to me that in their opinion power windows owns moving pictures, but this is ok because, its just a fantastic band!
@richis404 top two albums ever made...ever song on both albums are classics,...cept big money..just cant get into that one and i graduated in 1985...this album is so 1985..u had to be there
@richis404 rush is far from under rated. although they havent been conducted in the rock n roll hall of fame theyre still one of the best bands in the world
@richis404 at the end it don't matter. These guys where made for music, understandind that is part of the deal, plus; it brings us "the few lucky one" here, to listen.... and share thoughts
God, this song is fun to play. If you have a bass, you should learn it, it's not too hard, you just need to get the double-finger-double-string thing down, which you will never regret. Actually learn everything off of power windows. The only one I don't know is emotion detector. Man, that one is FAST. Hard to figure out what he's playing on that one.
@PumpkinlordEzmar Yeah, bro I realized quick that after playing bass for 4 yrs, I will easily be playing this lines for the rest of my life. So glad there is someone like Geddy on this planet. Often times, I think how can someone play bass like that? It's not even like he's on stage playing by himself. He makes these complex lines work in a song, which I feel a bass line should do. Support the song. He makes the listener say, "is that a bass". Have you tried "the big money"? That one is sikkkk!!
"Dont feed the People, but we feed the machines..........They shoot!! Without Fear ....In the name of a piece of dirt...For a change of Accent..or the colour of your shirt.....Better the pride that resides...In a citizen of the World!! Than the Pride that Divides..When a colourful Rag is unfurled...
I'm not sure exactly why, but this is one of the few albums that actually sounds better to me in the Mp3 format than the CD. The CD sounds good, but it was mixed oddly.

Why is it that so many people think power windows is a bad album? Ever song on it is not only classic but some of their most heartfelt and emotional work. Why people chose to bash it is beyond me.

Rush is awesome!
cgood1wvu 1 year ago
really Rush is so underated , why ? why so many bands are considerated as bigger than them ? i cant understand this , and this wasnt even their best album , moving pictures was one of the best albums in music histroy
richis404 1 year ago 24
@richis404 Seriously? Power Windows beats the HELL out of Moving Pictures. I find Moving Pictures to be rather bland, actually, compared to works on Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, and Counterparts...
thanecrios 1 year ago
@thanecrios Moving Pictures is the zenith of Rush's talent. Alongside Permanent Waves it sat between 2 different Rush eras: After the prog rock epics such as Hemispheres and 2112 but before the onset of synth as heard in Signals/GuP/Windows - don't get me wrong; great albums in their own right but pale a little next to Moving Pictures.... Limemlight/Camera Eye/Barchetta - classics!
mikemcd1971 1 year ago
@mikemcd1971 I've listened Moving Pictures to death. Seriously. Side one is absolutely boring at this point. When I think about it and compare it to other prog that I listen to, Moving Pictures, particularly side one, seems absolutely drab. It doesn't have any of the excitement that tons of other Rush puts into me. Even when I first listened to it, after Tom Sawyer I was like "..that's it? That's the "best" Rush song? blaaahhh"
thanecrios 1 year ago
@thanecrios I wouldn't dismiss anyone not liking Moving Pictures - you're right, there's plenty more to like about Rush and all their albums prior to Hold Your Fire are great in their own right: I personally list Grand Designs, Between the Wheels and Digital Man amongst my favourite tracks alongside Hemispheres from the earlier albums. Moving Pictures simply blends the best bits of Rush together. I admit, it takes time and is a "grower" - but boring it ain't!
mikemcd1971 1 year ago
@mikemcd1971 Moving Pictures? A grower? Since when is ANY album as mainstream and commercialized as Moving Pictures a grower? Side one is fully of catchy riffs like much of the mainstream music at the time. In fact, I always felt that Tom Sawyer could have been a song by The Police if it was toned down a bit. I dunno, I just think that it's simply playing off all of the success that Permanent Waves had, because Moving Pictures is the only album that is noticeably similar to another Rush album.
thanecrios 1 year ago
@thanecrios Fair comment: Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves are very similar. Tom Sawyer could be a Police track in disguise, I take your point; I always think that about Vital Signs too! To be more specific, Camera Eye and YYZ may be the "growers" on the album. Despite being mainstream, it was the last album where synths took a backseat accompaniement rather than coming to the fore like they did Signals onwards. By Hold your Fire synths had took such a hold that I find that album unlistenable
mikemcd1971 1 year ago
@thanecrios No it doesn't, seriously. Power Windows was good but Moving Pictures was epic rock. Just hearing Limelight shows how classic that album was not to mention Red Barchetta. Obviously Tom Sawyer was great but that whole album was awsome. Powe Windows was good but not classic, more 80s synth pop than Moving Pictures.
ViciousAlienKlown 1 year ago
@ViciousAlienKlown I agree wholeheartedly with that mate.
mikemcd1971 1 year ago
@thanecrios And in my honest opinion, I know MP was a big hit for them but Counterparts charted higher and they don't even really include much from Signals (save for Subdivisions) forward to Test For Echo on their live setlists anymore! TERRITORIES NEEDS TO COME BACK
DanZero77 4 months ago
@richis404 ya but it was one album that everyone thinks there a rush fan if they know the famous songs aka limelight tom sawyer red barchetta yyz etc and i liked there more progressive music hemispheres is an awsome album but ya your right rush is underated
zackjp 1 year ago
@zackjp moving pictures was my very first rush album and i never heard any song of it before. I found them on a sampler ,there was the song countdown on it from signals and i heard this song again and again then i wanted to hear something more from them and decided to buy me a whole album of them. For me in the early 80s were the best music, so i read the released date on the backside of the cover 1981 and so i choose moving pictures and i bought a masterpiece
richis404 1 year ago
@richis404 hmm we'll i didn't grow up in the 80's more like 2000's which really suck but in november 2007 went to a used cd shop i bought a the who cd and a farewell to kings listened to it every once in a while then started looking up on you tube vids and then near the end of grade 7 which was 2009 i bought rush retrospective 1 and listened for half the summer bought exit stage left in august 09 and rush gold then started buying ALOT of cd's now have over 20 cd's 1 vinyl and 3 cassetes RUSH
zackjp 1 year ago 2
@zackjp the reason why i told you this story is to let you know that moving pictures isnt my favorite rush album because its maybe their most famous.Btw i was born in the 80s so lets say that i grow up in the 90s and i found out about rush in 1998 i think
richis404 1 year ago
@richis404 ok
zackjp 1 year ago
@zackjp That's awesome. For me, one day I decided to put in my MOM'S moving pictures cd. I loved every song. I moved onto greatest hits and that opened it up for me big time hearing Fly by night and 2112. I bought A Farewell to Kings, Signals, All the World's a Stage, and Counterparts all in the same day. They are now my gods. Growing up in the 2000's does suck with today's modern music. Luckily Rush is still going.

@richis404 Watch their new documentary movie, called Beyond the LIghted Stage, and you will have your questions answered, my son.
VODMagazine 1 year ago
@VODMagazine i will have a look for it,thx
richis404 1 year ago
@VODMagazine I agree; the DVD does answer a lot of questions about Rush. Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins summed it up when he said "someone has to explain why they're [Rush] there - Led Zeppelin has been over-explained". It's true - I love Led Zep aswell but it is astonishing that Rush don't get a fraction of the publicity yet they easily match them musically and are not far behind in platinum albums either! Well said Bill.
mikemcd1971 1 year ago
@richis404 Because the average music listener wants to wank off to Britney Spears, Katy Perry, or Justin Beiber. They don't get it. Luckily for us, we do!
heashon2000 1 year ago 2
@heashon2000 ok,but i wanted to compare rush with bands like ,pink floyd ,the rolling stones, genesis ...etc....all bands who are more famous and succesful than them
richis404 1 year ago
@richis404 Rush is underated because people now don't know what real music is.
XxSolidKodixX 1 year ago 2
@richis404 I know what you mean but they have just been awarded the Living Legends award at the Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards in London and it was on the BBC :-) And I saw their "Beyond the lighted stage" at a giant cineplex in Central Europe recently. As Geddy Lee said in the documentary, They´re the biggest cult band in the world.

@richis404 I hear ya duder!! Haha!! This album is pretty underated too! It took me awhile to get into but once it hit! Presto!! LOL!!
BboyRYANiFy 1 year ago
@BboyRYANiFy at which of my commentars are you refering?
richis404 1 year ago
@richis404 The reasons are simple. One, their songs rarely conform to the standard length and level of intelligence that the radio stations want to feed out to the masses. Two, the trio would rather quit the music scene and take up plumbing than compromise their art. It's my understanding that 'Tom Sawyer' was the one song they ever made that was specifically targeted for mass media radio. Even then, it's still a fantastic piece of work ;)
whitliggett 1 year ago
@whitliggett yes look i got many of answers like this because the people misunderstand me a little bit.I compare rush with pink floyd for example and not with the pop shit from the radio and in compare to pink floyd rush is clearly underrated.
richis404 1 year ago
@whitliggett Time Stand Still may also fall into the category you rightly mentioned.

@richis404 rush is far from under rated. although they havent been conducted in the rock n roll hall of fame theyre still one of the best bands in the world
LuigieatsBabies 8 months ago
@richis404 I wouldn't say they are underrated. A lot of people know about them. However, the R&R Hall of Fame hasn't given them their due.

PumpkinlordEzmar 1 year ago 12
@PumpkinlordEzmar I agree man! Power Windows is a FEAST of amazing bass! :-) A must listen for any bassist! :-)
vinnykster 1 year ago
@PumpkinlordEzmar I don't play... but I do love the bassline in this tune. Some of Alex's best shredwork too.
soundy106 10 months ago
@PumpkinlordEzmar Yeah, bro I realized quick that after playing bass for 4 yrs, I will easily be playing this lines for the rest of my life. So glad there is someone like Geddy on this planet. Often times, I think how can someone play bass like that? It's not even like he's on stage playing by himself. He makes these complex lines work in a song, which I feel a bass line should do. Support the song. He makes the listener say, "is that a bass". Have you tried "the big money"? That one is sikkkk!!
