I trained at sugamo dojo in 2001 and 2002. Kagawa sensei an excellent teacher, lots of basics in low stance, little sport karate. He trained along with the students so practiced what he taught. As for kanayama sensei, he often took the fri night class. His capacity for training was amazing. His classes were tough. I can assure you that these senseis are the real deal. They are training senseis rather than just talk about it.
Of course Shotokan is related to Okinawan karate due to the fact that it originated there. The big difference lies in the changes it underwent over the past 70 plus years. We would best refer to it as Okinawan/Japanese Karate .
thankyou for your comment ronin, i was in fact replying to wannabees comment on kagawa sensei, but who told you kagawa was sport oriented.. ihave trained for many years with kagawa sensei and he has never once mentioned the sport side of it.
These students are showing basic techniques, but the real merit is that they show how the simplest parts of karate can be useful. I am a kung fu fan and I recognize that karate, although sometimes oversimplified by its practicioners, but not by its contents which are as complex as any kung fu style and equally versatile and useful, is far more direct and contundent than kung fu for karate can go straight to the point: knocking you out

Yep, looks like Vince Morris knows his karate kata and the usefull techniques gained from them. Might be worth while these two Japanese karate clowns on the video studying with him.
Instead of posing for stupid techniques that would never work.
it's even worse if you try to fight back, you shall see why soon. stop stalking me by the way; stop with the stalking, and stop harrassing shotokan karate videos with your crap. if you knew what you're talking about you would have videos

Perhaps in a university where academic students who might one day get to take part in imitation budo demonstrations??.
Just guessing. Some places he perhaps wouldnt teach would be places where they teach MMA/ S/D or vale tudo, shotokan sparring as in the kind done by certain Japanese police officers or more than likely he perhaps wouldnt teach in an original Okinawan karate dojo. Lack of karate knowledge might be the reason for that last one.

It is easy to criticize and I have my reasons. Because what they are doing is typical garbage that the unknowing learn then when they know they have to unlearn.
Me being one of them.
I relax. I am relaxed. I can relax even more knowing that I havent trained with this kind of garbage for years.

Hobby? Reading Geoff Thompsons take on how some strains of karate are incorrectly trained.
you are the amusing troll who calls himself an expert yet is clearly a keyboard warrior. why don't you post a video if you know what the fuck you're talking about. or did you get tired to get thumbed down so much? look at your comments here -4 and -3 to your comments so it's pretty much a concensus that you're a dumbshit
If i am not mistaken, these men are demonstrating basic techniques used in the part of training that is more for coordination , timing and balance. Once past this stage, more practical training ensues. If you hate it so much, don't watch it...go watch Okinawan Karate
I have been a practitioner of Shotokan for over 40 years and it is not Okinawan any longer. It has undergone numerous changes over the years and has little resemblance to the older systems taught in Okinawa...It has taken on it's own identity and emphasizes a more streamlined approach to training. Yes, the two are related but the differences are becoming greater.
Funakoshi, born in Okinawa founded Shotokan, in Okinawa, it might of changed, but originally it falls with the original styles of karate ie shito-ryu, goju etc.
These are the type of Masters people who rubbishes Karate should look at.They are far superior than Micky Mouse Masters. They are all old JKA MASTERS like Yahara, enoeda, kanazawa, abe and manymore great masters from the okinawa region as well.
Really GREAT video but a little hard to see. I got dizzy from the shaking, LOL! But thank you so much for posting it!

Kagawa is like his generation's Okazaki, a wonderful kicking specialist (perhaps not specialist, since all his technique is superb).

salstream 3 years ago 3
Why would he want to fight Kagawa? They are both civilized men who train in different ways.
Both have the right to train the way they choose. Kagawa is sport oriented and Morris is self defense oriented. Both are compatible !

It is easy to criticize. Go find a good hobby and relax....in the grand scheme of things, what you and I think means very little.

Kagawa is a very seasoned competitor of many years and a skilled teacher. Where does he teach?
Ronin6575 3 years ago
Kagawa-sensei is teaching at JKS hombu dojo in Tokyo and Teikyo university
laserkej 3 years ago
Does he ever visit and teach in the U.S.?
I have seen him on videos for years ....he was such a focused competitor, whether he won or lost. Just such great technical ability.
Is the JKS a newer break off from JKA?
Ronin6575 3 years ago
If you want shotokan karate sparring that is realistic the Japanese police seem do some good stuff.
K.U.G.B early competions were good.

Seeing my video wouldnt make any difference if this is crap or not. Video of what? Stupid high kicks?
Tell me anywhere in this video one move that could be used in S/D?
You think high kicks work in S/D?
Masatoshi Nakayama had more idea about usefull karate.

This is Shotokan Karate-Do, which is Okinawan Karate, and they are just doing some Ippon Kumite variation.
