  • Thanksgiving Day 1968 I just got back from Miami and went to th traditional Wayne Valley HS football game in my white basket weaves and cashmere. Bet a hunny bux `gainst my alma mater and LOST! In th last two mins -- ooooooooh! ... I haven't heard this cut for 40 yrs. Still sounds great.

  • The Message of this song as well as the beat was so INSPIRING to me way back in the SPRING OF 1972 / This Song Helped me to make NCAA College Athletic HISTORY at THE University of Florida (yes, ANOTHER PROUD 'GATOR') as : The 1st BLACK ATHLETE to set a SCHOOL RECORD at a MAJOR 'WHITE' University in a DISTANCE Running Event Longer Than 3 Miles as a NONE RECRUITED WALK-ON / Ran My 1st MARATHON (26.2 miles) in 2 hrs 39 min at the tender age of 19 / BEFORE KIP KEINO Inspired The Kenyans

  • They call me the topcat...hahahahaha

  • So this is why I love this song / ANY MUSIC THAT'S BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH OR INFLUENCED BY 'GAMBLE & HUFF' seems to have 'A BEAT, a RHYTHM, or a MESSAGE I LOVE / 1st I just love certain songs and only later find out G & H had something to do with it / and I say to myself " NO WONDER I LOVE THE SONG! "

  • This is a Gamble-Huff production, therefore the Philly Sound.

  • Why ya'll keep calling it northern soul. I thought they were from Houston, Texas. That definately ain't the north.

  • @doyoubarnes hiya, northern soul is a term used for this type of music which is played in the NORTH OF ENGLAND. the term was created by dave godin who wrote for the BLUES & SOUL magazine saying it was music played "north of watford". the TWISTED WHEEL CLUB in manchester is probably the most famous northern soul club in the world, & is still going strong today. go google, northern soul, twisted wheel manchester, blues & soul dave godin. USA equivelent would be BEACH MUSIC?

  • @PaulGTSE Thanks for the history lesson on northern soul. Very informative. Do you know if they ever played the Twisted Wheel Club?

  • @PaulGTSE ...? Northern Soul was an ENGLISH movement in music. By ENGLISH people. This is NOT NS music, by definition.

  • @SPICESMUGGLER71 see earlier comment. tut!

  • @LLBS2010 he had brothers, no ref. to twin tho?

  • @LLBS2010 - wikipedia says: Born to parents Langston and Ruthie Bell, Archie is the second oldest of seven brothers, and the brother of USC and NFL football player Ricky Bell, and former world Karate champion and singer, Jerry Bell. He also is related to producer Thom Bell.[1]

The group's from Houston Texas, this cut was written and recorded in Philly, and the soul music fans from Northern England eat this up like candy!

Dave Godin RIP. I was a pen-pal for some time. Wish I had a chance to meet him.

  • i was in 8th grade when this song came out-we had so much fan back then late 1960's

  • Why is it Northern Soul when they're from Texas?

  • @Craigr244 back in the day a jurnalist call dave godin who wrote for blues & soul magazine "christened" music played "north of watford" in the uk in soul clubs as "northern soul" ...twisted wheel-manchester. catacoombs-wolverhampton.chateau impney-droitwich played this genre of music. the "south" tended to be more funky. go google, find out more DAVE GODIN or NORTHERN SOUL. ktf paul g

  • @Craigr244 also your nearest equivilent in the usa would be beach music

  • Sam Reed and MFSB. The sound of Philadelphia.

  • @curtisjones400 1969 to be exact. I turned 18 that summer and thought I liked, "Tighten up", released the year before, but this cut was so much better IMO!!!
