One of the few Crusaders albums I missed. Thanks to YouTube, I now have a chance to discover music that sounds as fresh as when I listened to tunes during the 70's. How can the youngbloods stand today's stuff? I sometimes hear some passable 21st Century jazz music on infinity tv. But it's not as creative as this. The "new" stuff is mostly covers with no new innovations. Oh, well. Maybe some day...
@jastoeknee I still remember the advertisement at the record store at Music Plus in Garden Grove CA before they closed down for good.. The ad was posted everywhere...I love jazz still but I love the classics..
My computer will not play the song past 10:29. I hadn't heard this song in a while. Searched purposely for it, and enjoyed it as always. I know Larry Carlton is featured but Wayne Henderson's solo sure is a pleasant hidden jewel in this song. I wonder if these guys ever stroll through the you tube comments to see what people write about them. If so......Man, you guys sure were awesome!
My Dad absolutely loves the Crusaders and so I was introduced to them but it's because of this song, Soul Shadows and Eleanor Rigby that will forever have these brothers on my turntable/ipod!! Genius. Pure genius.
the best version of this track is the live version where they hold the final note of the chorus forever. that particular version is one of the best covers i've ever heard.
Yes indeed...This is back in the days when smooth jazz didn't have to be called such, because it was all smooth. So much of the so called smooth jazz we hear today is meaningless, because it has no feeling. Today's artists are so caught up in technique that the feeling gets lost in the mix. No one today can compare to the Crusaders.
I could write a whole book on what this song means to me. The short of it, is that it brings back so many fabulous memories of my dad in particular, who loved this piece. He, my mom and grandparents - all so far way, now - were all big Crusader fans. I'm at work fighting tears right now. This is back in the days when comtemporary urban jazz had more meaning than it does now.
@soap1919jt I so, so, understand what you mean - when I first heard this song over 30 years ago I was knocked out.....it still has the same effect today.
if you like this, you would also enjoy early LP's "The First Crusade", and "The Second Crusade". I used to "rack" as many Crusader LP's as possible on the turntable and let it rip, almost every friday evening w/company and wine glasses. What a way to unwind from a busy week.
Please can someone tell me where I can buy this 10:58 version of 'so far away'. I can't find the album above on cd on amazon. This song is amazingly done. i see a short version of it on their 'best of' cd, but I'd like the longer version. Can someone let me know where I can get it? Thanks!
The original version can be found on "Crusaders I" and "Way Back Home Disk #2". You can also find 3 live versions. First on "Scratch", with all the original members (Wilton, Wayne, Stix, Joe & Larry). Then on "Live in Japan" (minus Wayne and Larry). This version has a excellent guitar solo by Barry Finnerty. Finally on "Jazz Crusaders Live in South Africa" (minus Joe, Stix & Larry). BTW did you know Wayne, Joe and Wilton are appearing in concert together!
I spent many hours trying to learn Wilton Felder's tenor sax solo. Still can't play it!! Hearing this again after all these years is a very moving, spiritual experience for me. Thank you Lord!
Very nice. If you can, hear the live version that was recorded at the Roxy. When those brothers get to the place where they hold that note........classic stuff, what breath control
I love this song and have for years. I am a Crusader freak. Can you post their song Little Children or Three Children and some of their songs from Old socks New Shoes.
This is one of their best, there is a longer version on The Best of the Crusaders CD or Tape

I believe David T. Walker played guitar on this and several of the Crusaders early recordings. He does the sort of "weeping" thing on it.

@TakeStockDetroit
I believe the weeping guitar was Larry Carlton, he brought that sound in...!
