Call it "old school" but these were the 'golden days of moviemaking' Superb actors, Fabulous scriptwriting and the absolute best director--Mr Alfred Hitchcock!
thnx so much for uploading this classic, with Ingrid Bergman's aristocratic beauty and Cary Grant's superb acting talent and of course it being an Alfred Hitchcock's movie it's like an icing on the cake. it's a pity, They hardly make such movies nowadays.
This is the first time I've seen this film. I don't care what anyone says Cary Grant was one handsome man. I think the only actor today that can be compared to Cary would be George Clooney, for he is handsome as well a fine actor and producer. I think George shines above the rest because he was probably taught "old school" since he has great actors in his family. Just my opinion.
other than the first of the film this one lacks almost to its bare bones and total lack of the typical Hitch humor: easily his most serious film, nothing he ever made of the really good ones has this super seriousness Topaz comes to mind buts its a real bow wow some great stuff in this one, just fabulous and Rains is at his near apotheosis: only Deception by him is better
@Strawberry7Lynn It was the norm back then for everyone to smoke. He actually died of a stroke in 1986 at the age of 82 when by then, most of his colleagues from that era had already passed on so compared to Humphrey Bogart (who died in 1957 by lung cancer), Clark Gable (heart attack in 1961). Cary was one of the more healthier actors
Does anyone know why the video quality is so poor? I watched Casablanca recently, which had much better picture quality and was supposedly made in 1942.
I'm amazed this wonderful film is here. I thought I was the only one who enjoyed it so much. They don't make films like thus anymore, but I wish they would.
@shadowplay71293 Agreed...Back when there was such a thing as classic beauty. Today Hollywood considers the masculine, hard features of Angelina Jolie "beautiful." No thanks.
was there ever a greater man than cary grant! he is the most handsome and charming actor to ever apear on any films. no actors now days can compare to him, brad pitt and all those others really arent worthy of being called actors knowing Cary. i think they should play more of his movies on tv!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@samsajerk100 omg I find mr grant the complete opposite of all you just said. He is actually quite dorky looking. Before you go ahead saying I am a popcorn generation guy allow me to tell you that I am from a generation where I can judge things based on reality and not Nostalgia. I can admire the screen presence of Bogart and still call mr Grant and James Steward odd looking guys that do not have the screen presence people seem to think they do. A much better choice..mr Pierce Brosnan.
Cary Grant is amazing! I loved him as an actor ever since I saw Arsenic and Old Lace. The Philadelphia Story may be my favorite of his films. Him, James Steward, and Katharine Hepburn, three of arguably the greatest performers in cinema history, all in the same film together =)
@gremashlo Sorry my English is not very good, and I heard Cary ask "Dont ýou need a goat?" and the reply made no sense "you'll do". Thanks to your comment, I undestood the dialogue.
Well, idk.. black and white movies are way better than the movies we see nowadays.. I really cannot say what it is.. but there is something more in this old movies..
@LadyKant987 it has little to do with the lack of color and everything to do with character buidup, good storylines, good writing, and actors that actually play their parts well! Today, there is very little creativity and few actors of any significant talent. Back then also, there were really no significant sound effects or hi-tech visual stuff, so the scripts, directors, and the actors had to grab the audience with actual skill.....peace
@candygir7 Yes, much more ridiculous than the average movie, past or present. Imagine making us believe that the Nazis would be trying to build a complicated device like a nuclear bomb in Brazil in the 1940s immediately after being decimated in WW2. And then they are so dumb and lax as not to bother checking out an American continuously hovering around the girlfriend, yet so suspicious as to kill their own for merely pointing to the wine bottle.Too much cognitive dissonance to stomach.
@qualquan oh I have not seen the whole movie but this part only and it made a lot of sense to me. have you seen the movie opium connection? also another portrayal of reality while people just watch it and call it fiction. it is amazing how people are so closed headed & don't see the truth even when told of it.
Though belated, this film should have claimed Academy Awards in the following:
Best Actress: Ingrid Bergman
Best Sup. Actor: Claude Rains
Writing: Original Screenplay
Cinematography-BW
Art Direction-BW
Sound Recording
In addition, it should have been nominated for Best Actor-Cary Grant, Best Dir.-Hitchcock, Film Editing, and Best Picture. One Hitchcock's finest films, and beautifully acted. However, maybe should have gone to Grant over Frederic March in the Best Years of Our Lives.
@madrina334 What are these real women people keep talking about? Women come in all shapes and sizes, even if i´ll admit Ingrid is a fine specimen of a woman.
@anamagdalena28 Well in today's society unfortunately people look at curver women or larger fuller sized women as not as attractive in the movie industry as say a smaller woman. Hope that answers your question. I mean Marilyn Manroe was also a little curvy as well as Anna Nicole Smith. Both Beautiful. Maybe you took my comment out of context. I am a curvey woman myself. I don't have a problem with smaller women I just like meaty women too.
@madrina334 ? plenty of women have curves nowadays and today we have many far superior actors to this generation. Too many people confuse old with classic and think that anything in B+W must automatically be better than nowadays.
@Jammsbro1 Fact is women may have curves but not necessarly in every place only in certain spots. As far as acting goes well that is just it acting and some don't know how to leave it at the door when their off the stage. My opinion is just that and a comment. People seemed alot more genuine back in the days then today.
Among his motion pictures, would place 'Vertigo' alone above this sophisticated thriller, with the master at the top of his skillfully perverse, audience-manipulating, entertainment game. Own the Criterion issue already, but certainly will enjoy watching it again, here. Thank you.
love these old movies dont get any good storys now adays,,all blow up and kill ..
nad repeat .old movies .over and over..plus the same actors ..back then they didnt have all the speacial effects and still made a good movies ,,and actors could acted
Such a fine movie. Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains at their best in an Alfred Hitchcock thriller. They don't make films like this any more. And how could they? Who among today's stars could replace either of those actors?
None could ever come close to replacing them...but Isabella Rosselini is almost a deadringer for her mother Ingird Bergman, she even sounds slike her mother when she talks sometimes.
ingrid bergman was gorgeous....she was WAAAY ahead of her time....you dont see much "acting" from her...every now and then she slips but most of the time shes very real, highly unusual for leading women of this period....most of them were so over the top it was embarrassing, but she kept it real:)
LOL. She's drunk and she's driving. That's great. Is this the time period where women used to drink while they were pregnant and not know what a problem it was?
Drunken and reckless driving is a staple of old movies. I think back then it wasn't actually against the law to drink and drive--just to get in an accident.
We still promulgate the misconception that cool people like Jack Bauer drive recklessly. Some stupid women still think that bad driving is like totally cute. And of course no red-blooded American male obeys traffic laws. As if!
The theme music from the show StarTrek has a very similar melody to the opening music of Notorious.. Seems Alexander Courage was influenced by Roy Webb's work.
@Rita3500 Cary Grant. A top bloke from a previous generation. The epitome of 1950's cool. Someone once said to him 'I wish I was like Cary Grant'. Cary Grant replied 'I wish I was like Cary Grant'!
the self control that cary portrays is soo convincing.. he wants to show her how much he really cares about her but the last thing he wants to do is ruin it all and show his cards early because he knows that somehow SHE must prove herself worthy of his affection... they dont make movies like this anymore too many wimps begging for approval now a days on television
It is something that is integral to the character's in the movie but it means nothing to the viewer in terms of the plot. Its'what drives the characters.
Nowadays, most of the anti-American fascists are either in Hollywood or working for Obama.

the self control that cary portrays is soo convincing.. he wants to show her how much he really cares about her but the last thing he wants to do is ruin it all and show his cards early because he knows that somehow SHE must prove herself worthy of his affection... they dont make movies like this anymore too many wimps begging for approval now a days on television

@fpadilla671 You are so right about them not making movies like this anymore. Hitchcock was a legend as was Billy Wilder and David O. Selznick.

Absolutely love this film. Both Bergman and Grant are great in it.

Poor Cary Grant always on a passengers seat next to a looney female driver (Ingrid Bergman and Grace Kelly )

What is the McGuffin?!? Sorry I'm stupid. Someone please tell me.
sbarudzija 2 years ago
It is something that is integral to the character's in the movie but it means nothing to the viewer in terms of the plot. Its'what drives the characters.

The falcon in "The Maltese Falcon" is a McGuffin. But the movie is about GETTING the bird, not the bird itself.

lol. Nah, think she was just feeling a bit under the weather.
tbish09 2 years ago
She says that she's a drunken driver, second offence, and will go to jail. So clearly she's drunk.
LitCrit101 2 years ago
I was clearly joking. I thought that was obvious, perhaps not. Of course shes drunk! Not least because she was just drinking at a party for hours...
tbish09 2 years ago
Oh and theres also the fact that she's driving like an absolute lunitic..oh and she says shes drunk.. bit of a give away :p

Of course she's drunk. Her father was just sentenced to jail and they've been partying since then.
